I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.
( Z9 r# Y/ L" eIn phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community; R" ]7 J- t) b/ T
Engagement Training.

, q& T3 N7 `7 P+ b! O) q1 IWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
; |. E# o3 |8 T" F$ K- b# z(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
" g6 F/ S! ~. t/ y# J& Lgroups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
7 b6 r1 j2 {1 { F7 y! jtogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
" B6 b' F3 E' A8 JCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
" k/ d- r- h8 [- ePacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years: |) F6 Z* K5 g4 @/ v, L! ~7 w
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
0 h0 H' C& b; ]" cconflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
/ X1 f7 U* H$ h; @2 b, ]international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:/ b; O1 J% c. k* N* N
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
; C- w/ _2 f, H, V8 f" ^Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the! U) o- V- `# f7 G
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
$ {- e0 U& G6 l6 Ginternational peacekeeping operation.
9 L4 H6 n1 h/ V% ~1 T2 X+ z; m" f u: x$ o' I6 ]
This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
6 i! c6 r5 s9 B/ m H ~4 F# Qown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
1 X8 x- @0 [2 |0 h+ q! Pwho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV! k1 ^) w3 c: `9 [$ s2 n% J! h$ G! G
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and: @8 Q% P+ A" m, E
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
* P9 w8 C* b- c; Z! R& g. timprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
0 U5 d) Y2 l' z+ u$ d% y5 aand music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!7 {% p: J2 O$ X
, F2 M0 i% V8 H+ B9 I
According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the" V4 i4 r: H# k9 L, d3 ~
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole. X! f8 W# i+ |- \ U% {9 n$ x
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
6 C; [/ w% S: u9 i% ghands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.. g! w6 Q/ I( v, [0 \$ n
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,7 x( m4 w9 X& b Z# o
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
