. d. |, q# X* J9 uAn Edmonton-based trucking coming is facing $3 million dollars worth of fines under the Traffic Safety Act for allegedly operating overweight vehicles on city roads.9 D/ y& k2 r; G8 o
A police investigation revealed that between August 15 and September 19, the unnamed company made 1,907 trips to the waste management facility located on Yellowhead Trail and 170 Street.
) B' O; Y1 R b$ E( M" vPolice say the trucks were transporting loads that were overweight by a least one tonne each visit. One truck was recorded as being 17.9 tonnes overweight.7 l! X2 k: ^9 s, { D- S$ d
"The company is facing a fine of just over $3 million dollars," said EPS Const. Dave Beattie. "It's a big fine, I'll give you that, but for the police it's not about the value of the fine, it's about keeping these roads safe.", y5 k. D; k6 R- F7 p
Beattie explains that with overweight vehicles, braking can be a problem.# J+ F3 Q* t4 ?$ B) G% g
"The last thing I'm sure you, and any of us want, is to be in front of a vehicle that is basically 17 tonnes over what it's allowed to be on the road when you stop at a red light."
