An Edmonton-based trucking coming is facing $3 million dollars worth of fines under the Traffic Safety Act for allegedly operating overweight vehicles on city roads.
A police investigation revealed that between August 15 and September 19, the unnamed company made 1,907 trips to the waste management facility located on Yellowhead Trail and 170 Street.
; S& L+ K, h6 R* T* MPolice say the trucks were transporting loads that were overweight by a least one tonne each visit. One truck was recorded as being 17.9 tonnes overweight.
; N! k0 @5 o/ U, a3 I! e, P"The company is facing a fine of just over $3 million dollars," said EPS Const. Dave Beattie. "It's a big fine, I'll give you that, but for the police it's not about the value of the fine, it's about keeping these roads safe."
* S; K! z- U! P7 H: dBeattie explains that with overweight vehicles, braking can be a problem.
/ f- P% O8 W: M9 m7 }2 B" T"The last thing I'm sure you, and any of us want, is to be in front of a vehicle that is basically 17 tonnes over what it's allowed to be on the road when you stop at a red light."
Beattie added that roadways can be destroyed by overweight vehicles since they cause cracks and potholes.
The company is due in court on Thursday, December 3.
