　　North country scene:

　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,

　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

" z+ P+ m& s& Y( \# U　　One single white immensity.
3 V  O; u0 V" h' ?/ \# {& h2 G5 q6 G/ f
: |- O: S8 b+ x/ h3 C; E　　The Yellow River"s swift current
: h) K, m" p+ _) ]' f
　　Is stilled from end to end.

　　The mountains dance like silver snakes
$ V9 G; e2 [# m% ], t: B( Y; U: D% d) Y
　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

% i( w; i9 j; M4 {: I　　Vying with heaven in stature.

7 Z# y, W5 Q6 O　　On a fine day, the land,
/ e8 ]# q& c/ q- `8 e) R
　　Clad in white, adorned in red,
. \: ?5 G" H8 ]1 C5 Y  ]" o! g
　　Grows more enchanting.

" o- j* j( n) ~　　This land so rich in beauty
5 N9 {! P/ Y' N' V" ~
　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

( o9 E: l5 w! P/ I　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti

　　Were lacking in literary grace,

& I6 q- t- H5 p/ J# H　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu

　　Had little poetry in their souls;
　　And Genghis Khan,

) k( [1 k7 ~3 }　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,

6 a5 `- T' @2 U4 x7 l; W5 s　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

　　唐宗宋祖 稍逊风骚 一代天骄 成吉思汗 只识弯弓射大雕
