谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语: t! E4 l8 `  V; ?. V

* r  ^0 h. T% [. `& o/ r4 E1 z) r  d$ c+ \7 h# p
在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯/ I4 t. F, l# d4 D. p% x
之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。  `% ]. S% J- {% g) r
若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!
( z( [, J2 h- R+ l' Q! J# s, J( L
' b* ]: \+ u; y# s, q(1) empty suit:/ E; e4 O- k+ z, q
指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。; [9 m  J* f% G
(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)* w2 g% a+ d* Z
例如:5 h) e5 X1 I% ]) }- t9 ^
An empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.$ m7 e) f( O! e
(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)7 @  E$ v2 C6 r$ {
Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.5 K/ j# m0 h  ~5 X1 W/ ]+ I) m" v
(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)
/ ~6 \, Q( T3 P/ P虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:
) F9 R/ P- M3 ]/ S0 X8 ZThe company is filled with a lot of empty suits.6 C# Q( w6 O! i3 S
(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)' B9 H! j, B& B% S# l! t9 s' e* ^, ~
(2) fair-haired boy:
. e- t- d* F: E指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man), q2 y0 J. O8 m1 {
(通常用单数,当名词用)3 \; V0 i' n- `
例如:
8 R0 o: Z1 K- sMr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.
& a1 w  ~0 b5 z( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。). I1 C% ~% C5 k: A$ _
Not being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.
# v& F& @& G$ a+ ]! a% p9 R" J7 ?(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)# I( ~& x; D9 ?* |$ k, J  ?; g
有时也可用复数:' U# m* V! I5 P8 x/ B
Mr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.
( t1 `, L+ w/ o, u/ J! S(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)
- u8 a6 P: y* o) V& t" qFair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.& r* [* [- \8 u
(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)
- B! |- `( U3 P' a  B8 |& u  S4 Z7 Z(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)7 B7 D5 D) R7 S6 |. h2 b  ^: ?
(3) fishing expedition:
8 n: Z5 k! r# E" ?为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)
: K! K7 J9 p9 S, W8 ?(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)
8 E+ \8 N- Z8 U: G& W$ Y0 p例如:
6 u' y  O" ~' G9 xThe judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.
& ?0 c* [3 O! F(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)$ N' X. _0 h6 H% H% D) w
The police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.; w. u+ f0 \, G. h
(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)
* v5 e; P0 P- x1 \* P. J(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)
! h+ i* g4 L/ Z4 S' X5 {- ~The reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.
6 H# l" ]5 C7 h( R* q(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)
3 }  J( m0 l1 a$ F& d偶尔也有人用复数:: z% a9 R- k4 T: ]* R" s; h3 L" q
Several fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.0 R1 O2 o$ M( b1 j3 H
(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。); t& ^6 e7 Z9 b7 S
(4) filthy rich:8 U3 ^6 N+ w$ i0 X% Q
意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)! R$ C/ K) J7 g2 l6 w% i  g7 U
(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)
  x1 w7 c) g8 u5 m) K  n多半当形容词用。例如:# i: Z' R3 r# P" ^7 e! |
With a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.! @- ^7 h  B! W  I- ~
( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)
; D8 R' M5 L' e' JDespite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.
$ X$ ~7 Z" F! B3 u7 ~( Z2 p+ `0 Q(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)
$ t) d: O- |/ u- K3 U  E$ [A filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.
: W, ^) P" N! s8 y+ C6 ]; A(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)
6 t( l  h& K4 o) OFilthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters., J' X4 |: C- A; \- ~. U2 ]% b
(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)
: _# A' [$ U( D. `' @(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法)
5 |6 o) ~. I! h" x) g(5) fairy godmother:. P$ L7 m- C2 C" X
指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)9 V5 Z4 Q( T* C
(多半指有钱的女人)3 I' I+ R4 }; d3 i$ g
(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:
! g0 D  |, @6 uMr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.  h2 Q; z7 T5 j, B+ A, y: y
(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)( {. S4 S& N7 |, ]3 b
After lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.* S; d) B6 G- B& M) `( M; q7 g! c
(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)2 M( f/ C+ T+ }3 e) [
有时也用复数:, ?! W3 S& j3 ?, i$ y. k& y) M% O
Only business women can act as fairy godmothers.6 M* \# F( o! `
(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)
* _1 k" ~$ [# a& c0 D" {4 U# ~6 L+ TIn Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.
' q& z$ C- t- i( v(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)/ N5 @( p. c: b2 y, H6 j: t* O! r
& N6 q+ X; A( ?8 X5 ^& ]" F) B
7 K: ?8 }( R7 ~7 J
6)eye opener:
, M9 n* Y" Z7 D( ]! Q: N- D指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)5 x7 o! j7 H% Z6 q
(当名词用;通常只用单数)
" \' m& T7 S# [' N例如:
1 {- A7 q# p2 x/ ~Your wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.
5 b# E) G$ U+ C" A(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)
. Z% S2 q& C* I7 B  JMr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.4 A- E8 i6 P! @: i9 A
(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)) ?8 r% W* x* z( H
The popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.$ ~0 H9 p9 y, T# b3 P
(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)1 M" b0 t, u) n
Some American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people." p% c, Z! k9 E  _
(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)9 c' W; s6 O4 t9 Z7 }
(7) hot dog:
' ]. @; }* m( b* _. k9 \指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)0 H% R7 _# d* H) |1 F
例如:
4 ~  P# j# z9 n4 f/ tSome young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.8 V4 h1 f& d, \( t1 e8 T. x
(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)
  X# k- K' T$ D9 Q(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)/ p1 d) n5 [4 X
In front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.
# Y2 A& F$ g% E1 Z& r5 b(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)
8 U0 }0 v4 P. V- Z! ](动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging), y  R7 B, [6 v! k* ?) v& f' R
During the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.

也可表达欣赏的心情:

指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)6 o' W1 O1 a* [# e
(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)0 J( |7 e& z& s
(当名词用,可指男女)# v# x4 @" T. O
例如:0 @, \* {& n. ^5 N: g
John seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.
! B# p  d& r' a* x$ W; }(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)
3 F& s7 U# f7 I  N& U5 [1 KBeing an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.
/ }+ G: e1 s1 k+ v. T(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)" P# I! }2 Z, v& [2 [4 e
Does Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?
6 @) n& W" |# c- v% G5 ]7 M3 b(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)7 R/ Y. F; _" ?3 E& G+ f+ w
You may find some eager beavers in any organizations.
& V# _" C' b- k; I* {# H, D( _(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。)
* j' {: f8 K% t6 h9 x% _* T(9)doubting Thomas:
! {# N+ ~( ]0 ]/ F& q0 H这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)& w  C% O- k; v4 l/ }: G
(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)
3 `! ]1 i9 _* E" p9 O9 f9 [(当名词用)
8 E' F  Q7 W2 O2 ?例如:
, t8 ~; a" G6 ZI am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.' a: ^+ x- N) n+ y. x* n7 i
(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)
4 ^  Z: \; q) z6 }% ?! TThere must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.! l0 q/ v/ _5 B" r& _! Y6 B& j
(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。). e% l3 w2 e8 l0 R3 I
也可用复数:
7 V! D4 H0 ^0 J7 j" r5 _! tMy friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.: j- y) S0 x" y7 y4 u$ [. ?
(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。)1 O- p: T$ f- @& R+ c# q. w% n
If there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.
$ w$ [* A% |) }, q$ ]4 G- L6 {8 }: L(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。)
9 v0 G- U. R. s* v0 [(10)dragon lady:+ G5 `  ?& p  ?9 k1 M1 H( G1 J
指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)
; o( E6 e' K0 a例如:
2 V8 n! R9 ?) U# {) ZThe chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.% t& F1 t: s4 E
(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)
4 u3 E+ j7 N; l' B8 nI am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.
' h1 y8 |& R" C7 [6 a4 x5 h(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)
/ t/ a9 i* i, L& j, ?Should your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?! }0 z' D' w2 [; r- `0 y6 W* M
(假如你的女友成了凶恶的女人,你要与她分手吗?)) w. ~# v3 B3 B) M; f, K# [
也可用复数:( }/ L0 K  D) ]$ k  S2 `
There may be many dragon ladies in our community.
# u; F$ C7 N! o% h. a+ M(在我们社区里也许有不少凶女人。)& y: W, B+ p& A# M$ X! o
注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
