8 o5 ^( o( d5 H8 ~$ V5 V2 ?( l8 ^8 `' s
1. I couldn't care less.
: j" j% l7 X! H* f( i: ^4 j
4 c, F: q' s( _2 m) u% m) Z0 F( A+ d 这句话的意思是“我不在乎”,“缺乏兴趣”(lack of interest),也就是:I don''t care at all. 或 I don''t give a hoot. 例如: % A+ N& e0 _7 n# N( R+ |: N& b; y
! n+ I% |( \; k) Q3 o+ ~ 人家如果问: What do you think of the budget-cut?(你对预算削减有何看法?) ' G. v* p8 V; ~% \) R$ S
: p# j" \1 m# t U( V
你回答: I couldn't care less.(我毫不在乎) % T; ^+ u7 s. M# @
. p$ B* N; E6 ^ How do you like Mr. Lee's political point of view?(你喜欢李先生的政见吗?)
1 J" y+ V1 F: @" H: f6 L
; U. \) @: A, Y$ U. h+ k# m I couldn't care less.(我才不在乎呢!) - q! J* e7 a& ], T7 E9 p2 ]5 J
& Y; _' N+ W6 H) I
0 W( F6 v7 V! m2 j
0 O6 H( t$ Q: G3 r5 d( B. G4 q I couldn't care less about the promotion or pay raise.(我不在乎升级或加薪)
x1 f7 c9 L/ G, w9 G& j* g" I/ ^ d0 W: m, ?$ M& [8 i
Yes, you do(care).
/ e$ E7 l- H* U5 O$ j' O* w" e i7 u: W; ^
至于 I couldn't care more. 就是“我很在乎”(I care a lot.)或 I care deeply. 同理:
6 s' ]" ]6 T V5 { @
3 f6 B% B ^# X$ I4 j I couldn't agree more.=I totally agree.(我完全同意)
* N; d. }$ v2 C- K- _- O6 l" z9 D) K
I couldn't please you more.=I did my best to please you.(我尽量使你高兴) ( }% S j1 G5 ?' w' A/ p5 R
4 @# \: s: w, i4 D8 R% r; i* p I couldn't be more right.=I am totally right. , ^" L. z* w& B& T! i% O
% N. N4 E) C7 D8 K2 n3 f
4 r+ Z% |( s B$ c. A9 }( \ I couldn't be more wrong. , M2 W) i- L! m4 M* l
I could care less. = I care to some degree.(care 的程度可能减少) ( |( |/ K# G" k j1 b9 U/ d
4 m. b3 Z) H' E! L( ]8 Q6 S2 C I could care more.=I care some.(care的程度也许增加)(主词可用任何人称代名词:he, she, you, we, they 等。但只用 could,不用 can。)
; X% [5 q+ z' L- m6 Q( p8 h+ H6 c9 J4 @( W
2. No bones about it.
7 q p7 q5 q/ R- M, a, P; P5 o/ y" b2 n
意思是:真实的,诚恳的(truly, sincerely or exactly),也就是 to make no bones about it.(bone 要加 s, it 是指 something)例如: $ v- S+ B8 M1 ~
6 z/ f ~3 B, X) i6 V0 S
His wife is beautiful;no bones about it.(他的太太真是很漂亮)
* z! V+ _. A7 F* u* J
& Q$ h& Y5 v# I3 G4 \ Mr. A made no bones about it when he talked about abortion issue.(当 A 先生谈到堕胎问题时,他是诚恳的。)
+ V1 b$ v; @3 t/ }$ P* M: u: w
$ S' e: S2 S# L2 H When I spoke on the topic,he said, "No bones about it."(也就是他同意我的看法) ! X Z1 D* L7 S* }2 b# ~ c
) ^# \3 r- L4 ~8 l; E$ r3 S No bones about it;the weather is very chilly today.(今天是真的太冷了)
% D0 p4 A3 C/ n A) w/ I
0 e; P8 B* L: j+ M# v 3. take it on me! 1 p3 D' Q. R& o( c
) f, d3 u" I- x/ A 意思是:“这是我的,请用吧!”“这是免费的”(help yourself to it; it is free),这多半是指吃的东西或一些不贵重的东西。例如: " R$ U2 w) _- R7 P, C4 [
$ b" z8 w8 P- X$ w
Here are some candies from England; take one on me. (one = candy) - h) a3 t; `1 L- J, H% l
; T1 ~. ~6 j3 L
The restaurant owner said to me, "Take the dessert on me." (餐馆老板对我说:“尝尝我的甜点吧!”) 3 F1 |8 @3 x& q' {( _1 `) d
# L" b# b; Q1 h" q* B6 @
Please take these pencils on me.(取用一些我的铅笔吧!) 4 Y4 j) ]% e' d& w* c
S7 A, o) Z' ~% m- r% A! u
, E3 a; K2 C( ], y0 L' u
' k' U F9 r* V& u, J
(假如夫妇在一起,也可以说:Take it on us.) ) }3 n6 Y, @' `9 L! K
* A% B X, p! n! w, A% [! b 4. I am from Missouri. ' J7 X! [- L/ L5 Q4 O( @
; X$ S" \" o: I' a# b2 Q% A& ~ 这句话有时后面要加一句:“I need to be shown.”或“You have got to show me.”,意思是 Missouri 州的人很固执 (stubborn),不太信任别人,一定要人家证明一下(prove it to me),所以密苏里州也被称为“The Show Me State”。
* z# @6 B0 \2 d2 b8 z0 z
5 E. L8 l7 Z1 V% {' z( Z$ F, o$ D# M8 W4 z5 {0 Y
He is not easily convinced because he is from Missouri. 1 N0 a% @1 o$ I: r' L4 I1 h2 b7 M
- o* W/ n w1 G6 W$ ]/ u Don''t try to fool me; I am from Missouri.(You have got to show me.)
0 O. G+ O. [3 O; P
% Z1 q( ]8 o' Y8 ?' x* q/ [ We are all from Missouri; we need to be shown. 4 b8 b! i8 r3 M6 U
: W( e T0 V [$ X. I5 X# x/ }
As Mr. Smith is a tough guy; he must be from Missouri. (Smith |
