You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,

6 h4 Z# z' r5 B) ]* `. RI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
4 V7 V% j( P% `) c7 o
8 }5 ]- o  T1 lHis name was Kyle.
& Y! n7 X+ @) @/ h& S5 I- b
, j% y$ q7 B$ N. A. I" JIt looked like he was carrying all of his, x% W/ F- H: b1 w9 Q+ U
Books.
) ^' t4 f- T. ?8 t/ M
5 o7 r& w+ B  l/ A" t* F8 r2 m, WI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
" ^# q: C5 q! a& x0 ~
' o# W4 L. ?, C) T. Q! mHe must really be a nerd."
0 c# X2 k+ l( R6 i: _& S* m/ r' r4 n9 T/ s7 ~3 I$ s: ~8 k
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
; q8 m  p0 q: J+ D( N: ?/ \! g. {3 L; H
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.4 s, [0 ]# z1 S& ~) u! O
( W6 j5 T& O$ v; @! y# E* Y
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
; B  g, `) i2 l2 m( L
& ?+ @' R, a& A( p3 O; y6 BHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.* Q! A  d. ^$ r9 p* s

# e, n8 P, T9 i7 \1 P8 PHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
$ D  d2 v" T" g# c; i4 W; A% M7 Q
8 R! h$ Q6 Z: K; kMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
; h* g4 X8 W2 `! ?# }5 k. ]& O
. v3 ]; Y& Y% [, i- `3 D9 Y6 H, z% sAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.( i9 o) w8 x! X: ^  ^

# Z4 R! s& d- D! u  d, n+ k* w: ZThey really should get lives.# U' s2 o  L# G7 u, J

( @7 T" L7 L  R7 M& g% E. m% P" _" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"& W0 k* r0 Q+ z; E. u: `% a4 F( T0 |
7 Y6 ~$ ]# Q' g
There was a big smile on his face.$ U) Q; S9 j& O: D8 @! }

8 _" n3 H2 S- A8 dIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.3 P& Y9 s8 J( b/ X- K" z! Y
7 a/ p6 V1 y$ Q: F' d
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.9 M  ?: {8 W1 ]8 N: U! a: ]
& G/ j: H9 ^7 M$ _& N: S% K; `
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.. F  v/ r% \  ~

- L. D; |4 {$ R% H- eHe said he had gone to private school before now.
. q7 J3 h! ^5 \3 T, [& J) b2 ~/ J/ @  c6 b
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.; K+ k! l! ?9 y0 h
1 s$ o% E( [3 b& |
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.+ w/ p1 R: }3 h# Y

/ Z4 i2 w% ]( r6 GHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
( H1 g0 x7 ~( b2 I+ U4 x9 w* U' D6 u) `! S; F* w
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
0 H, C8 A0 R) X: B/ ^( q" l# G# ?) {- b6 J0 V
He said yes.
9 y, X4 K: @1 b; P+ k$ c9 Y! |. @7 C' r
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.# J6 J( w4 _1 g
, H5 u! y! w! ^1 ^/ x* \9 ]; a6 A$ C
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.4 f7 Y/ V% Y, o* z: r
4 [& V) r8 j2 o. v% ?& X) ?: c
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!/ `1 m" ^: s0 J8 ]; G0 z

5 j& G+ k: e3 d) u2 M4 `' _, {- c6 p" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
$ W6 W2 j6 [( v+ u( K$ z3 ^8 O; X6 a( G# o: O4 \
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends." j0 T0 J/ t* ^/ `

, |. _+ K& Q, R' e$ a0 j# ]When we were seniors, we began to think1 i( @# x9 ]" q4 B8 u' V5 f$ X
About college.1 C( X% T# y& [9 Z
( i1 u$ S% A. N# D% Z% w3 Y5 W
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I$ o- F4 G! Q5 A
Was going to Duke.
6 X* z! |: d+ x/ s) z6 k) ?. J& K
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
7 `! G( Z( n6 r0 X2 Y3 X; G8 ?. P5 q( @, U6 ^/ P7 X+ G, M
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.! N: @7 I5 w. q

' P1 Q' {/ i$ [1 w+ I. GKyle was valedictorian of our class.+ L) G  K1 e7 H. {
* U9 N! z9 A& ?" \
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.
0 W" E2 r9 }" s3 n$ y( W5 H* S5 j3 d) j. d4 q/ p
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.6 e: M/ r( o8 ^

7 I! R3 ?5 ?. H% fI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak/ s1 L+ T/ ?+ a  g- ?4 R! a

' G* Q( i* t- Z, @4 ?5 u0 RGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
% ?! Y4 y% I( ~& _# t3 J! `1 U3 F
) n% d# c5 }8 L" I# \He looked great., P% W0 j& U& l, \: K( n; o1 n
- o. M6 n( p3 g) r- Y3 {3 _
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.0 }4 w) q8 S. G/ g

, W8 ]0 d( }2 E4 M3 ]& M' z, Z5 THe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
( f( M/ \# p( I( F( H+ x9 T% I  g  Q" j7 G+ _& ]
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
9 J1 k, h1 B8 v2 R% \2 ]! {& X/ B2 Q( L5 h
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
2 p" m# c9 k* \. n/ J
. g4 }) C* a. Q$ Q; vToday was one of those days.
+ h& F/ K& U# q' x. J2 X8 @$ c0 e- n' }- y* }* L1 _( g% g$ w4 d
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.' n  h0 r- `/ E6 _/ x, w7 u
  v4 I$ I# G; q& |
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
( F& t6 r$ M) {, p/ V4 C& M% M  Y5 ?& v9 V) q$ i6 V
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
0 i* h+ K' h: S3 B+ _9 G( X: r7 I" Z( w" o2 r( ?6 W
"Thanks," he said.
+ ~' E; A* V" i0 I7 ^, Y! z
2 r1 M4 Z$ U3 ^4 [6 l2 r" t  oAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
4 W: c' e$ D! z: j; s, o+ Q
- o3 @$ B. E- M& U"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.2 E$ u6 f3 Y6 K) G9 y& b4 d! j5 k
8 g' ^4 U& S- _/ F/ i  b4 J7 F
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
% D2 V/ R( t% H& J3 Z0 J8 |" v' |- |8 h' K1 p4 W! _8 B3 J
I am here to tell all of you that being a6 H6 e$ }' b- T5 G* T
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
9 l+ T. m5 o7 s6 R
1 U3 m: E( b. L8 kI am going to tell you a story."% u3 f7 t4 }4 @1 n/ G

8 V& H5 [8 C- {1 W9 ^6 _I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.( Y! N: D; X# x! V/ X( h8 C' ~! c

7 |! u6 n* [. E9 N1 v8 }- aHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend., L1 A4 ~/ m/ R6 d- e" Z% n0 k, c# |

" A& L" M) ?8 e3 c8 sHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.; S. Y3 r+ ?. D% L1 y3 Z% ?

5 V+ K" w% q+ o$ E! q$ z& o9 zHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.9 A* E! s% ?% i" H
  t; L( F9 Y; w) h" P0 x! d
"Thankfully, I was saved.
4 V4 m, N  M6 q6 {9 Z* P8 f# G& u( R6 r4 z. W) V+ H
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
* l- ^* _3 F7 M8 N2 ^/ @6 j! L5 `2 b' G
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
" R1 r+ d1 h  y& [3 \/ x8 B7 z; ~/ {8 k& A# B1 C) e/ a
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.+ D1 d( Z. F, F. X4 o7 p# x
( h/ J1 K; Z3 ]3 @" L
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.7 T6 I+ A+ p$ _5 H' N

7 k/ G( w+ h. j) o9 O- }6 A3 BNever underestimate the power of your actions.
$ J6 O4 i2 E* c' _% u( A) S; o
2 x' n& b8 {1 S( RWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.9 n7 r$ r3 o$ d# K" ]; J
: N. ^+ Q6 C. f+ U
For better or for worse.
+ \! T7 g; k- e
& E( c7 g5 O# Y+ i- q8 _God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
& B9 J3 `  @: E' T
% Z( h* U8 j; ~. X' v6 P. R+ dLook for God in others.
9 M5 l( ^2 S# Y0 F' e* k$ R, K# j) k, I8 E7 U  y/ _$ P: @" ~# x7 _$ Q# |
You now have two choices, you can:
5 K9 `! E5 m, n$ F( e4 j  _- K  o4 y8 i2 c+ G
1) Pass this on to your friends or2 i6 ~: c5 F' K( g3 x( J; F

; b3 [8 U  a; v; I2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.# R7 h. N# V, i" }! C$ Y

: p/ ?* R8 c) p1 dAs you can see, I took choice number 1.
' O: V" E, h) g6 S( f% N"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
+ {0 r0 [# M7 Q9 T* m. o9 j
/ H7 M/ [1 D- UThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.: M5 h  T4 S5 B% W/ E1 s
7 ]" Y* z9 ~3 V- g- @
Tomorrow is mystery.
1 {2 f: B; b# e6 B5 }/ [" r
0 H9 o8 U: O( o  @Today is a gift.) x1 Q" B8 W* X: M* t
