You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,. Z( ~4 ~( n! u

% d& S: P% h2 G4 n1 x: ]& ~1 gI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
' C& Q8 f9 n5 I; d8 F" A# u* N3 k2 K1 g' r
His name was Kyle.
$ H( A( _- e. |" s, S" [  f2 u1 W' v7 M
It looked like he was carrying all of his: u' y/ W; N/ a. J* [' ]
Books.# }3 N8 a, e* _8 U& I7 I* Y& H# }

  R& u0 |8 S! t9 U' e* P- JI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?- ^  C, p3 Y9 f  f4 Y  A; `6 `

' U. I$ f& ^3 a* _/ U- DHe must really be a nerd."
+ }% i& T: ~* O6 r8 ^; P
! ?0 _& I- j/ v5 U( T& P# x5 b: yI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
7 H4 d4 {& S6 q  N8 d9 _  q" T7 t* H) U, h$ ^& l
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
7 r; t. C$ A- Q& h3 O
4 F; S& r/ E# v1 D6 G9 H* ~They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
- r' q+ O: ^2 r' i1 }8 i+ J; e; h: y4 I6 I8 ^
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
% M8 A4 a& `3 v
' L0 J5 S$ v4 r# k# U$ g( o5 oHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes, P1 O& }7 D& k' t
7 u+ v8 F$ U- @8 X7 s- j
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
% L: h9 x  j- H* E+ w1 }2 J/ F
3 L7 t2 U; ]4 N- V3 wAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.2 ]) J  F* x: z6 v% R
  C2 E' @9 I4 r% @- L
They really should get lives.0 r8 a7 `* w2 h6 U7 s9 C# r

: g4 P# q# e- a2 w. d" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
+ W) J* L3 G" c, A0 a" G+ b6 y  s- E4 z, `" k
There was a big smile on his face.4 I2 P: N' o0 s) o+ I

' Q( a: `- u: H3 \# M8 F( BIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.

I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.& i7 z6 }# }, F6 L  u
6 z$ \( @/ C9 u4 j0 W
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
' f* }" U& u  @6 A5 e9 {* ]# l8 r. L0 w' S% M+ C: C4 m4 |
He said he had gone to private school before now.
, I* ^3 g1 S" n" j
" r9 p# t( b2 D! [I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.. k; ^3 ?2 H9 D( z

9 F* v( n; J7 sWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
' r8 s* g4 W/ K7 G7 t( F# ~% @2 n9 x
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
$ k1 b0 h. F7 ^1 }
9 w$ I! q$ N" o% K% @I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.7 |/ E! z2 ]$ o8 ?
+ c, [8 ?3 _# f
He said yes.
) M2 _$ k! I( x. X' y6 Q5 q. m5 |0 S5 M" \3 `
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
4 `/ O. C1 |' ^; A$ C! v9 J1 x2 D  K/ T! H9 D
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
( N; W9 q8 Q2 U: c" `/ D3 k( F/ \* o8 T! M  H
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!: d1 F  n# R7 D: R& \9 i; ~2 C

! Q% E6 H/ E  {8 \; d/ C& O$ M" He just laughed and handed me half the books.. l6 A% O# h, o5 I8 l

' ?2 i! P1 D! u, z2 O* DOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
6 ?8 F6 v& _5 [. T6 U' s4 z
' s! S! R: m1 ]When we were seniors, we began to think9 \$ p& U8 q, [" ?* ]
About college.
, ?) E- x& }6 |* L4 C$ h. S. c+ l7 I8 u
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I( I$ j' I9 D' s/ @
Was going to Duke.6 s3 k, B; y2 `+ y3 D) p. ]1 A

! y7 e# p0 ?/ [5 h+ _. HI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.3 Y) t& d  C$ F* V
8 R7 u& ]5 l% n+ [' D! ?0 j" K! I
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
6 z* q2 S. A9 U  e/ e, x' w. x- Y  h9 ], K  O. j/ w3 A  O# e6 Z
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.
- ]) `+ k( |( c# S& X( n% _) K9 y* r. \3 Q
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.2 L! _8 i- |+ j- z  P

. ^2 v* l8 o% \  LHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.
: [. g6 z5 F* [3 k; B" L# @
' O/ d6 X. x( {% Q4 QI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak7 x0 _  o9 Z8 S

' [1 z6 L! V8 A6 ^( T6 \: `Graduation day, I saw Kyle.
& u  }/ P/ r; C, _9 t5 M7 l( e6 k  m3 W
He looked great.
+ m" d+ m* p$ H# d$ M9 v, }0 `( f. j" y2 r2 E+ g
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.+ a) l1 y8 ]& k+ {3 Q

! r# X/ \3 R8 f% J9 c$ lHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
& l0 W( `9 r$ O+ B0 B+ k/ [+ I1 P
% o# L- O7 k0 K# vHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.' r$ \6 Q0 O6 i/ z; X

. O& B7 _) k1 i; @( }# BBoy, sometimes I was jealous.
6 [( L. r. n( U% n. i
' r- B. G! b; Q/ mToday was one of those days.
7 D: `, P! Y# Y0 o) D, w, D' Z' ~! {( |& `1 ]
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.& s8 K) a0 H, T) \5 ^% O" ]( e

( ^3 Q) V8 L1 [6 i+ fSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
6 ^( P/ W  c( b! \: E5 N) I4 x: Z9 h+ r3 l( Z* h/ N
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
' z" [: g* x0 ^; J$ W' Z/ x# o% _, Y* b2 v" f4 w# l8 M  O/ t& ]
"Thanks," he said.
: W7 M& V+ K; x+ \6 ?8 \1 p' C* x# r! J! M
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began! x+ t4 a) h: Q: B
7 z0 j, Y+ `7 Z0 f. [! ]
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.4 J. _; m" y! `4 c

  o$ K0 q2 V; k# t; B9 Z, RYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...- u# v9 w1 W, t3 e( p5 W/ P4 Y  [- e

  u3 u/ w' ?, B1 }; _& \; PI am here to tell all of you that being a$ z/ A2 H" s3 I7 n
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.# q3 A; s% E. B- G9 V/ y
' D8 N0 d4 R# x
I am going to tell you a story."5 J) c7 b/ S$ ?6 Y

. ~8 D) O: s& N' Q* PI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.' `+ a( R' a( X6 |

* S, r- N# D7 v7 {1 zHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
$ f% w6 h6 ]8 \1 x. |8 ^. H+ x3 D; S+ C, R
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.. @6 ~( q. r& U: {: J
3 O" R9 i) g) `3 e% I% {, Y
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.- [. m/ }' D9 p9 g1 e: x

5 u# G3 [3 p8 o7 _3 h"Thankfully, I was saved.
9 \2 a) g" @$ @( X9 K0 O" |( C6 u! F' T, D' z* `, N/ B  s+ ^
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable.". V- H# B  D2 d# }9 ?
# L+ Z! y* C3 m. |% w
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
# B+ \+ O/ q2 B3 M# g% Z$ e2 `3 z% I- l+ k% V  p
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
, R8 d% `. n1 ?( }2 H/ `2 d3 ]' M1 u6 k" Z" Y
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.
! b1 b: E) l% W, @; N5 G) \0 m4 R: _# k, R+ X' |
Never underestimate the power of your actions.# w4 n* Y' W! W* J" @( H' M

: M; @- K3 r( Y  B; V& ?& QWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.
+ q6 X$ {- L" G  X- Q6 d; a$ e! q1 @; n
For better or for worse.
1 Y# J; i* a7 Q( V
# e5 g4 F% x4 Q3 o4 d) c/ RGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
3 q- p; P' x7 x3 L1 q, ~! T7 E8 h) B
: ?. f$ J* {* @! m2 p' gLook for God in others.
, \1 V5 C" M7 `( i$ _" [5 k- J, a2 d* B! }& r6 M
You now have two choices, you can:- G$ J6 Q8 O; d1 l; o4 ~

' i, t0 r6 z! O- U3 m. }! j1) Pass this on to your friends or1 V8 d; z; Z% b% S$ b
) Q' m' \/ v9 G1 D/ H9 k
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
" \+ E$ I. x) l1 ^8 n$ ^
6 U' @* p+ ?( n3 Y, {- t) E7 hAs you can see, I took choice number 1.
6 K' P7 L7 ^/ l"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
2 U4 |+ Q4 p$ q' a* L! k- F$ J9 j) c( C, b! L& Q0 d& f
There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.

& g- A& W1 i7 o% K4 p9 K" uTomorrow is mystery.

* c& h' @. g- C) BToday is a gift.' ?6 b8 ^2 V. T7 L/ G* F
