One day, when I was a freshman in high school,! A: ^9 s7 r. V' u

I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.

I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?

He must really be a nerd."

I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.

0 \8 }5 ^, E) s5 v) A8 }As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.# G7 ^) g; i$ s4 ?
2 B$ V# ?, i r5 {7 @They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.% A- `& ^8 T$ G* v- b
4 b/ \ M( O5 K R0 E% _! r4 v- h' y
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.8 {! X7 X1 \$ }" Z! T6 a, N
; k) |/ `7 k. r% E- ?8 uHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
; Z f9 Z# h/ T# D
- {; X4 u! d \! _My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.' e9 V8 I3 `; E; K
1 r, ]" z* _$ R/ R3 K. L cAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
. b7 i" d3 o, w* ~% S: ?/ S/ r* v S4 u+ U$ K9 I
They really should get lives.

" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"

There was a big smile on his face.9 I( I( O, i: T; l5 |! z

It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.

I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived., n3 o! D7 }' R: X n( b- x

As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.

He said he had gone to private school before now.! \; q* J( G$ I8 a8 W

We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.# q$ ?2 \& |& Q; b5 L# U; r

He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.& K2 C- {0 R- ?
, `! }" ]* W/ }. xI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.- y: `1 S8 w" V

We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him. M5 g/ |3 r' f' X e! d# O0 _
; ?0 N* A1 R0 L6 mMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.

I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!' x+ ~8 s9 F( K0 d
3 ?# N" s- K s0 Q, S, U" He just laughed and handed me half the books., I: n) C- K+ p, X! `7 c

Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.% j1 e, }6 s+ Q2 C

When we were seniors, we began to think

He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship., ]/ T* h f7 Q7 g9 Z5 s. g

5 v: A. P- Z) oI teased him all the time about being a nerd.

He had to prepare a speech for graduation.

I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak3 X5 `2 ?/ X, S

He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.* g# n, }( m- f

Boy, sometimes I was jealous.

I could see that he was nervous about his speech.

So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"/ H( P, k& M0 z* s5 a# M% `
) U. G" y/ X+ k; b! D2 mHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.' U( d) K9 Q+ D! d) a3 j

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began4 B7 n3 |( m7 A% t, b! a# Q4 E
3 ?2 H9 [$ I% y9 h"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.

"Thankfully, I was saved.

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.6 ?8 w$ `1 F% V% u

I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.

Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.

With one small gesture you can change a person's life.
