You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
) a/ X7 q/ y+ I: m* R7 ^7 p3 J
9 V; x. Z0 O$ Y! p: W$ q" [. C6 kI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
8 s6 D( V# _: k5 t8 T+ d* s; f* ?( a7 h+ r
His name was Kyle.2 C2 R# G9 Q3 {
6 N# [8 P. D0 l& o( r
It looked like he was carrying all of his0 I, r$ Q$ n" s5 p3 X. K' ^0 ]' y7 v
Books.
7 I! |' m( O( {% B
' e" v, y% o% }! ~2 q1 ^I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?5 N. o( Q) i2 n1 G, g( P

. T- H! b) g6 f* {% @5 _6 H5 [He must really be a nerd."
2 Y; M6 F  B% O- }. d' l; ?! h
! G3 s/ f  z' P) EI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
& X+ B* x# X. x0 S4 p( f8 b2 v0 {3 h
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.+ T  ^# m; Z' m3 A% O
: p# u2 v! P, t' j% U, Y- u
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
) L4 E. K( ^) m1 s; Q1 O9 }2 w: g- p% e7 i8 j8 L! J1 f
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.2 P' G+ ]+ l5 H8 V& i# s; h
4 {' A* m  `. c
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
; W& Q+ h0 v: Q4 q5 O" c
0 c  E  J5 i* Y+ x5 sMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.% d  V9 ~' S6 A" l- k
! M3 k2 M; K5 N( y  j; W
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
3 l5 d" F* D0 F% I7 w
5 }% E: i5 \% NThey really should get lives.
  @: Z0 v4 ~1 Z- ~  @6 h$ K' h, I/ L8 _5 S' x$ @9 T/ x" ^
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
9 I6 M) M, Y, P. @! `; m8 W
8 z6 ~$ l$ P' w( \; _There was a big smile on his face., O( S$ A: L) t" M  w- }- _* u7 b3 s. u
7 Q8 `" }& L, w6 r) o
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
9 p; b9 R# H, n& e9 p  B# S. {) T) S6 t1 V9 P7 k  B( s, l
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
" @; h( W$ Z( C; k1 r# q
5 V/ _2 Y' E+ ^; FAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.% K/ V- D) D. Y, x
* ?/ K: Y( N; h& `5 `4 f& {
He said he had gone to private school before now.
: u! s' e; u% @0 P7 V, e. B8 T! ?7 c" h( A0 G: k
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
- e% d! U% P6 P" X' \) T4 W9 L% q/ Z6 P  X
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
: ^( G5 u% [0 `1 ?# ~" [
8 _% j7 o! b% C5 j, B* IHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
) \4 i& [, a" D
4 C, M: S, W- O, ?  jI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.3 @3 q3 f  l1 ^0 Q6 g3 f

7 C9 @- B5 F& T8 B4 w' o8 j8 mHe said yes.* H) E( w' c5 L
8 `0 J" B* O" x9 L) ?
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him., q) z  g( U% k7 r1 `7 w4 C; s
4 t6 c9 h4 v4 k5 T; n
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.9 x. M( J4 `  g1 W9 ~' \  N
, i, L  K0 P% d8 r: P' Q$ r
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!" j1 L4 c, \% W

. H) P' ~/ a& ?3 E" v" He just laughed and handed me half the books.6 i; {5 R, Q6 `" D% F, j( @

/ u0 Q  x9 }# ~3 e& B7 d6 U, ^) sOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
! q1 [4 E; w$ I7 j2 Q& g: h- I) }2 b7 O8 g1 z" p
When we were seniors, we began to think
) s+ v9 K6 I5 C7 u' tAbout college.0 ^3 q" o8 f5 X' P; }

+ Y9 l3 }; _8 R7 O# HKyle decided on Georgetown, and I
! h  ^" F& R4 [3 _8 MWas going to Duke.% F. L" ^; Z3 z; @$ C" p
4 o8 d0 ?9 N  ]# q4 W0 V
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.* I' D. z7 i: b, U3 p' Z

0 C# c4 N; [5 E) ?He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
5 U* E& n  K" v; A7 H* r! |7 a6 F' F3 v# R! U
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.
! z: n( c; \! a+ i4 @. x: @! ^# Y3 z$ U0 P2 O- i
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.2 Q/ L5 p2 z" o* j. p

( K; x2 s0 V4 E  y( eHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.
4 M, [( l7 |: q1 z& Y
/ S3 ^8 `* ~' V# dI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak" O; m) A: [# e7 T; T4 J" U, a- ^% E
# @/ t8 M2 z+ K! ?) Z
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.3 j; n0 B' f/ X' k$ j
% V: _7 N, M; t* \7 _
He looked great.
4 X) I/ K: v2 e8 M/ n. U+ B/ Q$ T5 D1 A. C! l6 T/ p" t
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
0 ?% C6 B/ ~+ D* l7 ~2 S" |6 l8 ^; ]0 y' z
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
, d# r/ E8 L* g5 c  Z8 r
7 k/ \7 d+ X! ZHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.$ S5 z. W/ t5 ?1 r0 F
* k+ d% r$ m. n
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
+ ~' H6 f- m0 Q. {* ]+ u
$ p" d4 M9 H' ~9 X- _* nToday was one of those days.5 O0 `/ d( e9 Y6 q* S0 }

6 T7 U6 X2 _! r3 b9 MI could see that he was nervous about his speech.
6 B2 J# t0 S+ H+ {/ V
& G8 S# g/ V8 y/ S+ I) B. Z. }( F- zSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
3 E7 w. k0 d3 O; i2 \  b' e# W9 Z- I, c# O2 e8 ^9 U
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
' u/ W" d$ t" Q' f" q3 }- z  M* {0 {4 R+ E8 ~
"Thanks," he said.
$ _( \* z9 `  O7 z; s/ [
; }$ z7 H: R5 L3 [9 G7 y2 fAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
$ A7 M4 h$ f  q- b
- P% r% y5 G4 l7 b"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.# j3 j' J+ I; ~  q( N

) E" e" {. V- r0 O0 dYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...( L% u4 {% Q7 \: T

, K/ L, W6 d: i+ w* i$ q" N: bI am here to tell all of you that being a
. f, Y. s4 I$ X5 _1 L/ l" TFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
% d3 J  y& w& \. J: b* n9 h
3 z: v, L* m8 fI am going to tell you a story."
9 s; s5 K: k6 K, O8 S: @$ H: Q! K4 O* x( E, t7 h; D6 L5 z
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.7 R* P* |, o  j$ G1 ?$ M

) N% \8 ~! X: \' ]5 S+ FHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
2 `7 U: B& t) Q4 k8 m6 |  W% g5 P! d% h- q' G
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
- h. @7 ~9 c% H/ l: S0 _; b* y' |) o, k7 ~% N, n4 e
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.* L1 \1 Z1 i/ {. R4 l

4 d4 N& B( J% N/ m2 ]+ P' b"Thankfully, I was saved.2 s  j& n6 I0 h6 S# y
4 T4 h/ d/ ]" z/ C) `* p6 c& a5 ~
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
  w7 a( ^+ V, H* {- D
$ z$ P: N; ^7 N- X  L' t3 j. RI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
, ^; N0 K  [( ]0 a; j' ]6 {2 R, b5 M% N8 u
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
7 Z) i) M1 ]* F( V  v
6 M9 q6 m7 V$ I( _  V. PNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.
4 V: q1 F* _. e8 U# k/ u8 T" I& R7 j; U: ^. p) g
Never underestimate the power of your actions.
$ K2 o' v1 W& I' z9 n0 |0 c8 L3 A7 _5 M' o" I
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.& |; I; [& G5 p+ j
# y) N' g& y: ^7 E
For better or for worse., k& n% S0 A1 o( m! U

9 R" L$ r6 Z( w; i, E! ?8 gGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
' t% a% g% {" P. d
$ m" j! i) T4 r- Z2 iLook for God in others.2 |) o% \' ~7 Y* F0 G/ b% y* X

' o! a, C% x8 t# `, vYou now have two choices, you can:
; n: C8 F# x/ o. Z, N! s
& u9 {5 g" V0 ?+ X$ _+ U# s2 S1) Pass this on to your friends or
: a7 a  b- q  I2 P
8 [! W. I3 v+ u2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.. h" K4 u4 I, ~, l( T

7 r1 i& u8 W: S( c1 {% fAs you can see, I took choice number 1.6 P* ~4 W3 ^5 G1 X) R' P- W! x
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.
4 C5 i; p* S2 {( l7 ~2 n5 R( b5 H& V( P) A. Q% Z
Tomorrow is mystery.% Q5 @/ y( d9 Q) l9 r- ~# R) U+ ?

/ e& L, {* @" L3 q# x9 dToday is a gift.
