You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
9 c+ m# x3 T) c( K) A' L  e# w! ]0 q; [% H
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.# U# W7 A! M( O* h- v! s: H  O" E
. t3 ~; J5 }* j/ Y
His name was Kyle.
1 W$ O! ^& Z# s" g/ \) T" f; H' B9 d  b7 q
It looked like he was carrying all of his9 ]- d0 `" T8 A1 f. ~6 n
Books.! P( ~. V( H  A/ {7 t6 U
8 I0 {3 y6 H8 Y5 L
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?0 w# F- M% j: i8 |7 u; h7 b$ N
: Y0 R" _) z8 J% Z3 }' U
He must really be a nerd."
* S* g" {; ]% t* \- T; L" q$ r# \
8 ?8 f8 O2 c6 j3 d* q( d( mI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
" P+ f/ V# e: p! \6 f  \& P- h2 I/ S9 j4 }8 E
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.# F$ }9 y, U* i" j& {

, V4 [9 g0 ]9 o! P8 T7 {They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.- B  Y8 e/ g5 O2 }, O4 O. K) W% U

/ S) @4 x8 n4 N. C- {/ |* l, `, yHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
) h0 A6 ~* }/ q
5 L- g7 s+ A5 F. @' a: M+ Q4 DHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes& G, O0 A  \* Q+ N  v( m

/ i8 l' E$ k6 Z% C9 p. VMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.1 g7 z( G# V6 Y- R  _

2 \( O5 y5 z- K; aAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.; ]1 B% W1 E2 I& E% B* W5 w- @
6 S( y0 q0 ]) n8 O# V2 v; ?
They really should get lives.
" v# I- Z8 c2 a+ Y& [; W7 V
! D$ T1 I1 B% @7 f6 R6 l" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
, W+ r% v: P  J; |! T& o
* P0 R+ @) @* `% g8 VThere was a big smile on his face.
/ E5 E4 j2 s3 p1 z0 b  j" \# i
* ^( W) d/ |8 l* t3 d; j( vIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
) u; ?" d! B0 m, U7 q: D- A- k+ \
* L9 V/ F! \7 _. ?/ AI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.% x& {  w% v) a# a: y# W8 n
4 x/ g; z: u8 `( r- r3 |' B. @
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.8 n  ~! _3 [. Y0 Q) Y8 |  E6 X; A: g

- F4 d0 ]8 C# s6 d! f7 d$ C( D  z( ]He said he had gone to private school before now.! _- U* L" u- B. I. g

4 |9 `& p0 m6 R# B! C- s( nI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
, o$ M* A$ V- m6 \, j: ~0 Q( o0 ~# E, j/ p
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
  f  I3 K) R" ^+ h4 J
& R5 z, w2 r/ G% S1 T, _: dHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
. u* \; }  G7 C3 l( u+ E# M
' ~5 u* H/ W2 m2 r. s( g5 AI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.( }# W: ^/ ~; ~% S; {  k1 C0 x0 J
  D) ^. b6 U2 G+ a
He said yes.! x( J" u  c$ N/ g6 N8 u

% k" d& e' {  h' R: @We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him., ?/ D& g: t2 c& ~: |6 [' r1 [: E
6 V- n1 p6 s5 `7 d) M
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.# Z0 d, a8 t: o3 f5 T1 K3 l3 |
! [& J& K" L+ z+ `! k; X
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
# Y2 S5 f$ R2 H9 R0 m
! z- a! e3 }* `1 i) ^! t& J9 B" He just laughed and handed me half the books.+ v. h7 Y, g" [( R: z# f

+ H  }0 h) `. Q0 c7 fOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
5 @9 L5 N% |( }5 e7 |
. _8 _/ I: |! j* eWhen we were seniors, we began to think
' v% |5 u/ g, K! zAbout college.. v1 F2 h9 Q2 `
* A$ K* t' ]8 ~4 ]1 |
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I0 Q0 j- U; X% i7 g, e+ S: ]
Was going to Duke.
1 v; O. b/ w3 ?9 n
( T" s+ r) B. z1 AI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.; [) m  n! H) ?" l' c
$ |. H- Z% T/ |2 [9 T
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.' K, F4 F0 U% n4 ^' ?
/ [% M% _8 O; L. `/ m1 A
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.: S' s; S7 k3 F3 p. @. X) J  h

* R4 u6 ^& I/ Z9 |9 o2 \I teased him all the time about being a nerd.
; a" j' n+ i/ P  \: W) }9 V
9 L3 @4 g) d8 Y0 JHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.
, l- z" `1 G% C8 e* {0 z  d2 D0 E- s( T' K7 ^% r
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
  e1 x# r) X/ b% _- S/ R: c
* v; b; O$ m1 v- ]* }' I/ C  QGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
% |4 T1 E# @! ~
, Q2 \1 x, f+ R, |$ CHe looked great.) N# h0 T2 S! v  B
9 ^: O5 t8 H7 D8 N: V8 l
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.9 q+ x  i8 g: q- }

' o' X3 F" \' i# \$ QHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.7 m9 O! @: l% B4 @

* w$ R2 b& a$ U8 a! _# e, rHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
3 v  Z0 x- G8 {- Q+ j1 ^  ^' U/ z3 _* P0 D. ]
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
7 u  L- ^4 t! l7 ^) \, ^* h
+ c% ~% x" x: \- {6 ~. K) }/ @Today was one of those days.
( s# l' z, C! f' ?0 o. p
% V0 Q/ X; U9 |6 e1 a& @* wI could see that he was nervous about his speech.2 T8 k- c, r% E7 t, ~
, F& o, y" E) {7 E- y: }
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"$ l& @* ?+ y7 _* p
/ I# s" m" \# G6 r
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
, c& B  |. N5 ]$ W4 P4 J1 B0 S5 s+ a; Y% c( E, _
"Thanks," he said.- u- c" a! O# V5 b" o
1 d0 |( }' R" A+ k! w
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
) ]% q& E9 u9 k8 d5 k( Y3 Y* x" r) H- r) I9 j5 E% D, V6 u
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
; f2 `- D8 C6 F- r5 {/ C, ?& J7 l% Q0 S# ^" X
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
( P( G6 j1 E: X! j/ ?! f
$ O/ c8 O: L& U: {/ m/ mI am here to tell all of you that being a, J+ X7 Q; _7 t( ]2 u  ?
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
( C0 g) n/ U* w- c
2 b5 ~! D) f! p' pI am going to tell you a story."
  g( ~' y1 v* R3 i& e9 ?: Q5 h
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.; M) f( n, f( E: Z: C3 A

  D" y( r2 h1 a9 O2 N7 zHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
7 q5 P* ]& p  l6 U# G0 ?# g0 J
( o+ a: _$ r! @1 ^. FHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
  ^/ V3 E$ ?  d: V( S% T3 j9 r3 h
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
: a, _, J: z& L1 J1 U, X1 U/ V( k1 S1 }/ K8 @3 u
"Thankfully, I was saved.
0 o! \3 J, B$ L/ e
9 ]5 C* u. w+ |# e0 uMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
) g: M- e- z5 r4 B2 j
7 j* v2 _4 ~2 l' I* U7 F' [I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.9 T% _! a3 G, N% Q/ i0 j' R* P
- M9 d! j% \0 G- w. b
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.2 x5 V* R  P$ H: T0 @5 Y& P, @
. P9 S9 ?* E( O% Q
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.3 \% J2 M  _4 W4 v0 Y0 ?
6 S1 O/ k/ _, x, `8 A/ j' c
Never underestimate the power of your actions.$ v% [( Q( O8 |# j
; J9 i" f: q. |( G
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.
0 @. H+ A8 y! i
" N5 Y3 Z3 R2 G3 bFor better or for worse.
# M/ @) _7 f$ }% K. L8 e. t. \$ G8 Y1 x  `6 U* L/ t
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
4 }% E7 x$ n& K, v: m" o
' u% ^  e. ^5 ~2 P; vLook for God in others.& Q, k$ ?# t( u' u, Z

9 T" o: b% j- _' S) ?: l  e+ iYou now have two choices, you can:* y0 u4 {; \* {" l: S* m

9 p) p# F# A. p: n2 e. O8 t1) Pass this on to your friends or; S; }' D/ \8 M7 N, w0 x9 _
: J2 d0 s/ S7 Q
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.1 o( S' e/ u5 Z$ i: i3 J  @
$ Y# U' m! [* F  M, d7 v
As you can see, I took choice number 1.
( H8 t- F7 U+ j% |; s"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."- q( G; j3 K6 n& W
% t" I+ F% B2 t
There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.
5 M/ s4 {- u1 k% `9 z4 N; N  J/ O, X- ~& l& |* A
Tomorrow is mystery.# d* |' i( o- w3 n

" e" ]& {. }! q9 N( xToday is a gift." x5 \4 b7 J" m8 C7 e
