One day, when I was a freshman in high school,

I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.

His name was Kyle.

* Y3 M4 V: V' t% g5 o, G/ B1 IIt looked like he was carrying all of his1 |! x% @! O+ r( D! l
Books.: u! K5 R8 ]* N: b

I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
- F, ^8 M% `8 g' y" V( X9 a l9 U( c1 j( g8 ^1 r# z
He must really be a nerd."3 ^% d0 H! j3 d9 A. F1 ?5 i
- ] n" L4 p6 ^9 f' rI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
) E4 M* }; n+ f$ Y: q: {# r* f
6 ]% Q/ B" y- y. w' ?As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
" b; e5 p6 H! R. \
7 a2 w/ M8 V6 r; |: HThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
" }# r5 f& S0 I$ O4 w0 z8 [
) l" P z$ n5 K8 ~( rHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.3 U: x A! Z! P E; ?
. @& p5 `" N. Q- Q9 w; e
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes d/ \6 h4 \! ^/ o+ Y
6 H; t" B) c' V1 s& ^+ gMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
- y7 r6 d- Q7 ^- j6 B: m9 A" R) S2 g( g# |# V$ [% n2 @
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.1 |# s5 \4 w! |
; k+ H2 H, D6 M6 P6 n; z
They really should get lives.% P' g) S+ ~/ J9 }
+ R" [/ I% C7 C- M( u0 z# [" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"

; m1 B5 A$ b8 e/ YThere was a big smile on his face.
; a' M; k& F! q% t! P+ t( Z$ Z$ k
6 A3 u, V0 l9 s% C, i# rIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.7 e9 k K# G( q7 |) U

I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.

As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.8 t' }0 \ r/ @. q% n
2 T6 G5 g9 h3 m% D; ^He said he had gone to private school before now.2 A) U' U$ S% Y7 F
" R$ ^5 C6 r5 r5 W0 ?+ p- L+ ^) u% m
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.! c s, X- f; S% k' i* b4 D

We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.

He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.

I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends. I) e1 z1 _( v: _! s$ |8 F
; [3 M' @! H& }6 w+ r. SHe said yes.) L3 x5 U6 |1 G4 D0 w+ M' G
6 A% C W9 p) `* I/ a; ]3 yWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.

) }8 t* y2 n: Z4 g% eMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.0 C( w* Z: [# c
: i1 K9 R& s' mI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
) P/ a. L- h0 z$ F# [# ?9 ^3 F; C
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.* w% J5 L9 |, [2 R I& @& a) Y
/ ^# b+ C! c) C' V) H4 w9 B# {Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
$ S1 L, r; r" Q3 R! H @9 ?) _0 C' A! K9 Z, }' S/ ^( L! B
When we were seniors, we began to think/ ^( `3 Y* X0 \0 Q
About college.

* [" `3 W- k7 eKyle decided on Georgetown, and I
' s. J- z; P! M% A& |; vWas going to Duke.
; c; J4 f- o/ n; Q' E4 B( j6 }: E
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.- v% ^: ^0 |: V0 f3 k
6 G$ |/ n; n9 V3 x% O6 m7 IHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.& `5 s' S n0 o% Y) N8 g/ m! D( |
) V/ c+ s* X# p- {' h5 A' h' q% \$ s
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.7 B$ v% ]: e1 a: y0 }1 L* L
) f; m* n& s6 V: t* X) \- f$ hI teased him all the time about being a nerd.
! v9 i& d5 v. ]8 S0 `& N% l: G# q6 L$ S9 C4 \/ p% k& Q
He had to prepare a speech for graduation./ X# t. j3 U9 p
' K6 i8 b! B' f. S9 g" y% t; A! JI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
# P r$ A0 E& o* P1 K5 Z1 y0 ]1 I9 ]! d8 J q" K/ b3 V
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.
0 _2 A3 U) X; F6 s5 N8 P7 t) k4 X/ [" |1 U1 m9 g. U
He looked great.7 |1 ]9 F3 f C" Q
! f7 }2 V. f( @3 eHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.1 \- k+ U8 i( Q
% {/ Z# i9 _' ^& SHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.

- {7 n# m. t: L. j* {" V, BHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.

He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.8 ?+ X1 J; n$ T2 C, y/ U

* N& A: F0 d* L3 d& u& f1 w0 U"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.

2 d8 h+ H& A; R. J FYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...

Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.( h K5 ^" y C# o1 J8 a1 F

I am going to tell you a story."

# A8 y: z+ H5 S" nI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.) C6 c1 ?( o- K. T: a% R- T
0 F6 d6 m% j1 G: ]' i! KHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
& W7 O6 K: C2 u% I& |' e% g j6 d# g- S$ W" o2 d. {1 Z% i% O
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.

4 j5 {) l2 A( R; \" T) ^He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.( X v0 q/ g+ N& H
2 N+ D0 W! E! J) S' W) g"Thankfully, I was saved.

' K7 o# X4 J: i2 NMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."4 [. t' {2 _% _4 u. A5 Z

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.9 A9 ?( `$ N) {4 i5 S/ N
% r2 z7 A* l/ x1 x% ?$ g) J
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.

, P3 H% I$ g% t4 E9 DNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.7 {# k( f: a6 f

Never underestimate the power of your actions.

With one small gesture you can change a person's life.

: i8 d8 b8 R% M! ^God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.

Look for God in others.

) E' @' H; j! h+ ^+ [) ^You now have two choices, you can:

& Z2 D( Q/ w8 B A+ A/ D1) Pass this on to your friends or
( Q5 x3 Z# V7 E" j0 f3 Z* d) r; z- a" F
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.3 {( H$ A6 G$ R

As you can see, I took choice number 1.
+ Y- y v+ C& Z% N* n6 s"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."4 _/ L6 p) o1 o2 }7 o/ Y

There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.
