Department Mechanical
Position Profile Heavy Duty Mechanics inspect, service, and maintain diesel locomotives in accordance with federal and company regulations.

They are also responsible for other important tasks, including:



Diagnosing diesel engine malfunctions and making indicated repairs
9 e4 I6 T0 O  @- M6 i* R7 KOperating machinery in a safe and effective manner
Providing daily locomotive maintenance that includes changing oil or repairing, replacing, cleaning and adjusting parts
0 s- X) M0 Z1 e3 K5 A9 A% s! f. j( qAssembling and starting engines
- T( z/ c! L, ]) q- EDiagnosing locomotive component malfunctions
9 h& Q" s& V) a" m7 T" v& ^; |, u  NPreparing inspection, work and maintenance reports

Good eye-hand coordination
2 N; m$ D5 s' QFrequently lifting weights up to 50 pounds
Occasionally lifting weights up to 100 pounds

Regular exposure to dust, pollen, fumes, noise and vibrations
Working shifts, sometimes away from home

Welding skills
Using measuring devices and understanding visual displays
% j- y- T# o% f" j% w( O5 x! z8 qMay need current, valid drivers license, CDL, and locomotive engineer certification
Visual acuity and hearing threshold tests are required for this position. Written pre-employment tests to become a Machinist Apprentice are required for this position. Completion of 3-year apprenticeship is required to become a Journeyman Machinist. This position is subject to night, weekend and holiday work hours when needed.
