Albertans worried about the looming spike in natural gas prices could be in for another shock when electricity in Alberta is fully deregulated, says a consumer advocate.

Jim Wachowich of the Consumers Coalition of Alberta says the province's plan to deregulate retail power - which was originally supposed to be completed next year - could impact almost every household.

# G% K c! S$ @- r4 O! S/ e8 I3 UWhile natural gas has doubled in price this year, Wachowich said electricity has - if only momentarily - seen spikes of up to 2000%. He said that happens because electricity can't be stored and is always susceptible to price fluctuations.

If the province doesn't carefully manage that shift, power bills in every corner of the province could see huge swings, Wachowich warns.

Liberal energy critic Hugh MacDonald said the province reined in its plan because it knows it won't work.
