3 |9 F F3 M- {/ K' C The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 6 N# G( J5 ]* s2 [) h5 S- g
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
: _% I* G( Z, t2 |( Hin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
, n5 O! ]+ P) A0 ^4 `) Uexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
) d9 z: V' w0 r; B r) Dtheir church, it was very run down and needed + @* f1 r6 X/ N+ c& I
much work. They set a goal to have everything
% n' i% X8 c5 G& q2 y% Wdone in time to have their first service : \. r0 q6 i0 i a
on Christmas Eve. : n- n% {; E8 Z. T* C% h
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,# v4 ^) d9 S( W \
painting, etc, and on December 18 8 q& S3 r( i% Q5 s* g! \
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
$ v+ O5 t' d) H% U. @0 \O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving {2 j% {9 o, Y: H# D) _" y
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 1 R: N- }1 }8 T" B
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
, Q7 t- {# k6 v( H% a7 XHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
3 u3 P! @: `/ V! \! a! Zleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
& k4 V g T8 E, S* p& W20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
9 @% c& `5 y1 J- t& A N8 Mof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
3 c4 z5 f8 Y8 ]9 J; ?% I1 ~beginning about head high. : B7 L3 U. A, x9 F! K* q
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
/ j2 h9 j* B7 l5 f2 U2 Zand not knowing what else to do but postpone
- e) i$ A! G; q7 [& Wthe Christmas Eve service, headed home. % y6 M) I8 t9 X" f/ L2 E. N/ @& R6 ~
On the way he noticed that a local business was
, i! [6 T, x5 t& H) p$ {having a flea market type sale for charity, so he 4 l7 y9 m+ a. e- @ G& S9 A
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
3 i' s* M* r. A ]$ x, U7 @handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 2 @6 `3 j: H! s) A* ^ m
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
# f5 S; G5 [$ w! _4 G, pembroidered right in the center. It was just ; u- J) A2 o1 I
% D `5 k! V2 ~* U" m' `
; ^6 f( c' Q. g& o% Q- I7 Q3 g 1 X2 L, G u! @% m: P1 u
! B3 Z. o x8 x' W% {7 N3 p
3 H# j# V+ |8 }. F! \7 a
% E- k S$ L8 T# s; Y% {+ T
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 6 ~5 O- M0 h( M; k0 U# W& W) @/ H- T
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
( B$ R" X2 x$ M' Zwoman running from the opposite direction was ' g6 Z5 s. k% K8 }: R( r n! M/ r
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ( X/ }, p8 ^- R- B& F6 |5 U
invited her to wait in the warm church for
7 E1 J2 E/ u1 O: ithe next bus 45 minutes later.
! k0 o) ]& `" T, C" q. z }* o; ^; _! y' j
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor + }( y# n* J& f7 n& M+ z R, L
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put ; |% P: @, @! H* Y
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor ' G- U5 W3 Z) l9 I/ U6 F
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. ; G( @! C) ^! I) ^9 f- T4 H" @
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center! A/ t. M# V% I# o2 S3 K& R% A! t
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
" T# L9 @* p3 |she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" + o1 p% |7 G- ~6 ^. l5 S/ Z
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check) n$ I/ @8 ?. ~; {
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into2 B$ \7 N, s' O0 A u3 j
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
' J$ K1 o( J/ `/ O- p0 Emade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 7 {+ L, j+ ^- }0 M- q& W7 U
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
# v$ s8 v! a4 K5 g1 @told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
/ ?9 q0 H. s( ~" n" L1 I7 ywoman explained that before the war she and 6 Q$ u5 R0 B% W2 _1 D, ?' Z, R
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . , {5 K. N8 Y/ Y
! a0 c# U" O. |3 Q* IWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
. W3 o0 G6 s" X# YHer husband was going to follow her the next week. + y" S/ L5 n1 H( n, @. y
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
" V2 F8 F% h* e3 n( m. {husband or her home again. 2 W. O$ k/ M% M& q
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
% s4 A4 t- Q/ x) l" `but she made the pastor keep it for the church.4 _. k$ q: n, f4 v/ a
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
/ h$ ?8 m7 Z1 ^& Z2 l3 X# c) twas the least he could do. She lived on the other" E5 D- R$ n4 O5 E7 O2 r
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
) j; ~2 A, y5 z& l1 ofor the day for a housecleaning job.6 _& Q* y; }& Z
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
7 V0 r" h/ G. B5 P$ e( ^: o1 eEve. The church was almost full. The music and the : ^$ l+ {0 Q/ D
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the - K+ F4 \& A9 P( t
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
# Q# l2 z" a0 S/ ]and many said that they would return..
. u5 F" t G& V% D. a& t5 B# s6 XOne older man, whom the pastor recognized 9 _7 ~' Y; S' W) d& l( L9 w
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
9 N. w G" Y) u+ Xpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 5 x- w# O( i- I! A" |9 v
wasn't leaving. : m8 h7 n( A6 _# n" y
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on - Q9 h& C/ p* ?7 j8 X9 i
the front wall because it was identical to one
( p8 ~1 N1 v) l# o3 Bthat his wife had made years ago when / g$ o) ^1 J9 P
they lived in Austria before the war and how
1 p" p7 ]% Q* d9 W A8 @+ Rcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
8 j3 u" Q6 @) \H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he / {& p" s& |0 S" T
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
# ?: f5 X$ a# {8 a+ `& Fsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and1 E/ V* I! G3 h# C* C, v, v
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home# }9 L; C+ \8 W( C5 G/ `4 l/ A, J! X
again all the 35 years between.
" [! Y! Z) A3 X! t+ ?T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 6 z, E; {+ v# _7 P; N. m
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
. o% |% h7 R4 ^4 X* S5 {Island and to the same house where the pastor
: X. `# u2 Q3 r, u9 W3 l5 M7 Ehad taken the woman three days earlier.
6 _1 m n/ w# q( c: h6 I0 ]* r8 t5 MHe helped the man climb the three flights of
" w8 x, `% h0 H2 X! w. D# O+ rstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
0 b8 t- \ Y& [1 l7 L. X) Athe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
5 E6 ?+ C) _& p( K" Kreunion he could ever imagine.
