 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

6 J7 ]. M( d0 \, v) @6 @' A4 Y The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 1 N" m! C; o) V/ A5 U( A
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
0 J' k# t2 B6 D$ min suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
% O }* Q$ ^6 Qexcited about their opportunities. When they saw $ Y$ j3 M0 O/ J9 Q
their church, it was very run down and needed 5 V: H& {& G- k. Y" `1 M
much work. They set a goal to have everything ; n) i; B, A6 @7 g# E! Z. q
done in time to have their first service
! N$ Y' x: c7 k- m0 m) `on Christmas Eve.
! i7 {+ [6 p; H8 m' cT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
3 u* A0 P: m. P# [0 {' |0 d8 d5 U! Vpainting, etc, and on December 18
: I' u. E' N5 mwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
. d' [9 x7 S9 d- n9 WO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving - Y, ]' B1 v) Y
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
$ L0 ~# }, @# q# [/ Q O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
g6 {4 t6 n" \ r8 l( E2 d! y: JHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
4 s( i5 U m [3 ~leaked, causing a large area of plaster about $ R4 k5 Y, e; X! R% g
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall ( V- v# F. }( K8 U6 y' \5 e
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
9 m9 Y; g& {" A- U: I6 I/ }+ y6 d- obeginning about head high.
2 K. a7 A; K. T5 Q. W% q+ XT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 9 l" m* u% r9 O# T8 t9 E
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
& }7 {8 ^9 d' k- F. w! ^0 Athe Christmas Eve service, headed home. 8 y$ ]9 m# w; S, A
On the way he noticed that a local business was . W) M" a( U( I3 o/ V) [* O
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he ) ^- U: h1 `. {3 i6 ~! f) @
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, & B. u9 I" h8 s+ K8 k) G
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
5 i: ~$ B( K! t+ }, Owith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 6 ]( j Y0 B- k5 w$ w
embroidered right in the center. It was just 2 r1 N8 q* t' f, F/ X, A0 ?, a* Q
$ ?; [/ w. b/ O% k
# K2 z k7 c) S4 q+ [- ]: o; v

5 u& ^) ~5 O4 p9 H n) T& x v* T1 z! h9 V
( C3 R4 G- `) I9 Zthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. . P# T$ N. H+ t0 y" @4 ~
B y this time it had started to snow. An older ' W' j+ M# H% }9 U
woman running from the opposite direction was
2 ~6 d+ K M7 o! r% P# L( A- ftrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
& Q; G. E5 Q) M5 t, uinvited her to wait in the warm church for + A9 Y& c( x" ~2 \9 t4 A7 C( }
the next bus 45 minutes later. 5 ]% K2 h. u; @, l, H1 I; i/ D
. U& k7 h) J' _: IShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
+ T& |0 i. A- Z7 D! fwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put ' ]9 t5 v: z! ]$ Q! C
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
8 F( y: U. s7 `& V9 fcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
% `. k& i5 P! K/ u KT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
( t# i. l. ^1 ]" daisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
1 u! c2 p2 K* @( dshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
6 r2 Q7 _% U7 O @0 @The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
- A5 `3 o) r2 [' p. e) Vthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
* K! ^. W2 [9 ^% Zit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
$ w! Q; t; P6 `. b# ]. z: Lmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . . O( Q; L% r: B$ v6 g3 H
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor ! v1 S. B' F5 m9 ]) @0 v
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
; _9 Q, W" P% l( x7 Cwoman explained that before the war she and N' e' R, `2 j) L0 O8 x4 }
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . ; V1 M& g8 Q# B9 j1 D
' ~2 p9 n: Z4 ~4 w5 s
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 1 G) M) L$ ~$ ?/ [. m$ C% L6 N
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. ) X4 I! r# S( t \$ D3 k
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 5 Q: |& w' g- _9 g/ o. r3 Z: \* G
husband or her home again.
n" l$ ~8 y8 P% w& V% HT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
$ f3 d- F' z8 q6 o. ubut she made the pastor keep it for the church.) k3 m2 R+ b ?- V
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
! S! N4 L7 h- R) L, jwas the least he could do. She lived on the other
* ^! l# c: _" J" ?side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn ' N5 `- P& b, Y' _$ E Y z- W
for the day for a housecleaning job.
/ B: q& ?! c- r, {$ |7 P$ ]W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas ( c* O5 o" i& ~6 x- a
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
7 G- V0 I! k; m$ Espirit were great. At the end of the service, the : o7 W+ y) v5 Q1 G6 Y
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
/ q3 w ^0 \9 _" G! tand many said that they would return..
/ {% {2 n; f! K" D8 l$ L/ bOne older man, whom the pastor recognized
# L( v2 \9 K7 J0 P+ Efrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
9 ?' C A- J) Qpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
, R0 z% D" Q& z% y# {. Swasn't leaving.
; t& X+ ^- U$ S+ E$ d; I5 TThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
; z' r1 J0 S4 }+ w/ ?the front wall because it was identical to one 4 i2 v1 O5 ^) \9 e( Y* J
that his wife had made years ago when 6 ]$ } X3 i7 V2 N% j3 J
they lived in Austria before the war and how
& P" H1 B+ S$ w* U& e6 j, pcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? ! K2 `2 h1 j! w5 V
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
! C+ s9 m1 b& V+ lforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was ! Y. {1 B, Q e9 a) k: l% H
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
) Q8 e5 x: W* a `4 ^- M0 \- Aput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home: o! U0 y" Q9 a+ d! G' n2 y
again all the 35 years between.
* a6 y$ G4 V& l" A( [9 JT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
2 F6 p. }# P8 g) qtake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
* S* L$ K* O% |& ~ S HIsland and to the same house where the pastor
# N- }. z# D3 C" O3 `9 ^% uhad taken the woman three days earlier.
3 @. b! ^' l' S8 F' A/ }: bHe helped the man climb the three flights of
) a* m0 o6 a# X' j6 F( L, y( ustairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on! @2 H3 t/ s, T) \
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
* v5 ]5 m) I' Freunion he could ever imagine.( U. u! Q, X! a# N" p+ K
