Edmonton's population grows by 30,000

EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.+ O. S0 p, C' B) W1 s
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
. @) }, x1 u5 b/ G0 W/ @+ dThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.1 S) B( ]1 ?" K% p& K' W1 n7 k, t6 h
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.
4 h% }/ [0 c( v/ S0 R$ y"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. 6 A' W% X6 b, x
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
