Edmonton's population grows by 30,0007 x* v1 [' n# j/ g4 j# z+ b

) _ p0 g" v$ t3 rEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.

6 _2 l L& ]0 U% h! ]& `0 G" h6 j( e5 |The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.( ^1 H( A, m' U+ i- n' o* t. z
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.
3 a( B2 N0 B' w- t6 h"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. % A# R# j% c$ i+ x+ I( E- r
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
# h4 f6 ?* T; r9 U+ S! ^) @This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
