Master Composter/Recycler Program / Free!- s5 M. s# ]+ v
City of Edmonton, Waste Management Branch

% X Q7 B% J* f) S, ?4 B. DDear colleague: once a year, the Waste Management Branch hosts the
2 ]: l( x+ q \- `+ Q7 t R" G; a8 \Master Composter-Recycler Program. Over a 3 weeks course schedule
% V+ [. Y+ o" L* C0 K5 x F(Tues./Thursday evenings and Saturday) volunteers will learn about8 |. t' L, p) U
environmental stewardship in our city, such as: history of waste. g, I' c% [, ^9 @! H! Y
management; home composting; household hazardous waste;1 k8 v2 I% f k. s2 D. G
vermin-composting and residential recycling.4 W( V+ W% U1 g
) w4 V# }' n) \+ }" k$ W% Y% ?! a, B
This course offers in-class instruction as well as several field trips3 `0 G8 u9 i+ k; P* \0 W, u5 \
to various City facilities. After finishing the course, graduates
- t% Z! i s" M& p; Lcomplete 35 hours of volunteer activity promoting the four R's:1 h; H3 ?& @+ l. s
reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Graduates become important4 m/ N m/ O! u- P; r
resources in their communities as they broaden awareness about the
5 w+ f6 y7 d a9 U& Aimportance of composting and recycling.
% r$ T7 Y& P, X0 g$ F
" c# c) ~2 B2 m8 GExamples of volunteer activities include: help with Reuse Fairs & the) Q e# C" @: R, T* G4 g0 k
Reuse Centre; helping friends/neighbours with composting problems;
# M: H( @+ J- x Ppublic education display booths; assisting with programs and- q/ D5 F% X# Q5 S, M. h
maintenance at the City Compost Education Centres; assisting at
* F9 L7 ]2 o: H" V% l. U" b+ mvarious demonstration gardens and general public and school$ q) L. S' ?8 \ m
presentations.4 [5 e- j( R0 b4 \. c3 U
# T" Q, W& e9 t/ e9 P
There are many other opportunities for volunteers to contribute and
. ~$ E3 \4 M9 C$ x V8 q$ o- xvolunteers are able to choose the opportunities that interest them the
' L+ a P @4 ^0 A, _3 Ymost. Curious about recycling and composting and sharing your3 B- U8 u8 Y+ A0 K& m f h$ Y
knowledge with others, then apply to become a Master
) g; V8 o% k# nComposter-Recycler Volunteer!
