ABC Head Start is now accepting applications for the 2008-2009 school year.  ABC Head Start is a free pre-school and family support program for families of limited income.  Our programs are located in 12 locations across the city of Edmonton, including a francophone program.  Children’s services include four half-days a week of early childhood education.  Free bussing to and from class is provided as well as a daily nutritional snack.  The program follows the school year, running from September to June.

Each class of 16 children has a teacher, two teaching assistants, a part-time speech-language pathologist, and a social worker plus community volunteers. Special services (occupational therapy, community health nurses, cognitive and mental health assessments) are included as needed.  Social workers provide family advocacy and on-going parent support, including education groups.  See www.abcheadstart.org for more information.

To be eligible for our program for the 2008-2009 school year:
6 k( k6 D4 a5 G+ u•        the child must be born between March 2, 2004 and March 1, 2005
0 t& K4 w5 D+ u9 \/ M2 i0 N8 d; v•        the family income must fall below Statistics Canada’s Low Income Cut-Off (LICO)

Please note the above LICO figures are the Low Income Cut-offs from 2006 and Low Income Measures for 2005 with an added 4.1 % December 2007 Consumer Price Index adjustment.

7 X5 L8 N: _  V0 f$ U2 i3 a# tChildren accepted into the program include those diagnosed or suspected of mild to moderate delays in the following areas; fine motor, speech and language, behaviour, and learning.  Also accepted are children with diagnosed or suspected severe speech and/or language delays and those children from the community who would benefit from a pre-school program.
