Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 2 E' X7 l( q0 G

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
2 W* k) O" h s! w8 uCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
2 q1 Q u4 \7 A" `) dnews to report from that meeting.7 W7 w& k- G& M
/ ^2 g+ ^7 n7 P. x0 i7 c- {First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
: c+ k, b6 J3 C$ U6 F# uundergraduate international students from the increase to the
; H; N8 G- M- R: c8 j! pdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
7 N( V9 |$ M O" t$ U+ b6 U: s1 Vstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base . Z. P5 C! x/ E. s$ c4 ]
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
- h) P5 T4 s7 _: m1 x I! s* oAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
1 U% w8 B; i% f: V% u$ A/ lthe differential for international graduate students.) J5 O8 m4 v5 L5 K$ I3 r b3 l

Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
! V. ^$ ]7 P @# l) ]# Z( @( Bincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
; U2 L$ _' o$ s: _$ {220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students / l" t/ Z$ D$ ^5 V! O1 u) G; G1 T7 u
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At ; i3 }6 H+ p w; t7 Y4 H4 j
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in $ J/ @% r* n! k6 Y3 ^3 Z/ P
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
T+ m7 ]2 O3 L1 Z& iincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
7 d! `! W5 M7 e6 Uinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I + ?6 }8 Y8 O! ?. t% B
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
* i3 r( ~. t1 [3 S0 J* Uhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 2 P& W' `; A1 A: v+ X
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
