Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

/ \) N- T/ b% z4 T4 w4 `; g2 SYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
9 y) M! m) ~( \; }. J. z$ j$ m2 Bnews to report from that meeting.

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
' j9 u$ I0 J6 A7 l; _4 V9 X$ E8 Sundergraduate international students from the increase to the
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
4 A( o2 A/ r$ \' I+ u! ~- Ptuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
- d+ F8 S& R6 l  s" Y0 t* JAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
the differential for international graduate students.
' y' U) n8 r/ |5 N' w8 q
5 E' z# [2 L/ O8 L. S8 R) |Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
! f* ~; s( c6 Y& ?( c( Rleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
increases once they are here.

4 B" j$ u  k- P1 S5 r7 z# \! ^The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
% V5 q6 k  D' \) x! R! T3 x3 Qinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
( s2 G9 {0 h0 d4 `) Vwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
" T! x! S! j0 D& F5 m# nhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
/ v' W3 @  }" Bincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
help. Thank you.
