1 G! F1 y2 v1 q! x8 N, yGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties ( s& V, O4 ^+ e- f
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad ; ~# p$ z9 G `( Y% h
news to report from that meeting.7 l: q: x, O+ s2 I O# {/ g
# u5 i' D3 N$ J5 |6 D" ~3 j# P4 j9 LFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
" s( H! \0 }* y0 @! t* hundergraduate international students from the increase to the - U. t$ N6 b4 M1 U6 y3 y7 _
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international 5 g1 @6 n0 b |8 F7 v/ |
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 2 }, C; z* n+ t# B1 o/ j
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
/ ?. H" y: ? ?! N& [8 eAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase ! r9 J6 [8 y% O! ]/ m
the differential for international graduate students.
. o0 k S% B$ J7 e, u! E) H5 I5 H! p5 P. J
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
, j* E u& m: R2 ~7 ~increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
, s" N& v2 G b: j9 n. e$ v220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
0 ?- S3 q [$ c3 \( Gwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At , G6 U u& p7 {4 o
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
! x' R# n8 ]! x! ktuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected : q* }) H- {- h; k8 P+ p1 B& e( T5 {
increases once they are here.+ L: I/ y& q, v# W
7 N% n1 x1 A: n! {2 B. Y! tThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
* M) \. Z% t$ T+ z# i& Dinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I + ~4 b+ d$ f6 j! K9 o# N3 H& r
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
* Q1 B5 X$ s" a6 z/ Ihave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 4 l1 }$ T B7 O* R# k
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
