Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

" v8 J. ?6 D  MYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
$ _9 \3 e$ c; W; m* Gnews to report from that meeting.

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
7 L& u6 M( y  x4 |$ s* I& q( Q3 Iundergraduate international students from the increase to the
7 d- ?1 P! v* H4 O3 O8 Vdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
- t, l; }  V8 Hstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
7 s; d2 N7 m5 }1 k' y4 J; Otuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
+ R3 Q: A; U9 W4 g8 a; c. t6 q7 nthe differential for international graduate students.

  G! K9 n3 e' v3 H. q7 f) G- w1 YNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
8 {$ g' ?# }/ C: Q! r/ r/ a- C220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
* C: p6 |7 u+ H( ?+ Hwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
7 l: l- w" ?) n9 c# oleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
# [6 ]) q/ R; t8 f$ ~, Wtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
increases once they are here.

' W* n, _( y1 E: V3 P7 t$ r. CThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
$ R. j: N8 e* F/ V/ J% d2 T4 L( }international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
7 l) H' \+ [8 e/ r7 b# l1 {would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
: @6 A8 {4 p' D# N6 H4 V% V; Vincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
# c# g  E& u' o" Q5 Thelp. Thank you.
