0 P8 n. E7 h( q# J. e* s, `- [Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
- y6 |- R' V r- |" OCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad $ J7 E. J' V+ m4 q* p+ `7 B
news to report from that meeting.9 `: S" w- I- s+ C) }; P' \
, B3 _5 `* P3 u0 W# H. D4 jFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current ; }7 `* W# W; O% O
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
" q& l% Y: @' o# l) I. O8 H+ ~" Udifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international 4 `( y% d5 A; C* ~# `9 |5 g
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
+ u+ J1 q1 x0 B y! h+ M7 x) ctuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). $ y& b" C. E! D9 S5 d
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase " V7 f8 }. @5 y
the differential for international graduate students.

. X* d. X1 w. N7 _( V# jNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
* p5 H: U9 Q! P3 r0 {! kincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
9 q g+ x% J' G( P0 T2 S220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 0 i% l1 n4 |) q& q/ S# r
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
\* I& v! m3 p& p" ?# v# Kleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
) P9 ^1 w# F3 G' ?9 B' m6 htuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected / O* r; A( C6 M7 @! z
increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
4 P" t3 @! p9 V. r' uinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
0 \! h1 m7 g. \; H9 O6 Pwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
) B% m& e# j; J! ~0 I7 ]/ Uhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
; v2 k6 K) v' s U+ tincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
