Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
' j9 u$ I0 J6 A7 l; _4 V9 X$ E8 Sundergraduate international students from the increase to the + p3 t3 m2 ?! k
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international * O" \8 X7 t3 h* U4 t% _0 k8 F
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
4 A( o2 A/ r$ \' I+ u! ~- Ptuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
- d+ F8 S& R6 l s" Y0 t* JAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 8 o& k5 z' _. |
the differential for international graduate students.

5 E' z# [2 L/ O8 L. S8 R) |Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an / n. [6 t0 K9 @7 @4 z' p5 Q
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 6 _7 w) |% m9 c2 f p% w# h
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students " h* O9 }* M! z2 P, R
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
! f* ~; s( c6 Y& ?( c( Rleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in ) x$ D& _0 H j* y- O4 l
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected 2 i9 E- M5 ]+ o! \2 `
increases once they are here.

4 B" j$ u k- P1 S5 r7 z# \! ^The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
% V5 q6 k D' \) x! R! T3 x3 Qinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
