When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and

differential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this,
4 }2 ?: i/ a" Bthe fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers 5 @: W) H1 o! b; Y! Y. W$ L# v
and most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were
% O" J! W5 X4 c1 t8 {8 _asked to look for a residence on open market.8 X- `" E9 I! }9 v: Q6 o* N/ J

While the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has
! e7 B H7 ^. ]3 i+ _increased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid
: G- ^7 X+ D& f* X; [7 e8 P# [exactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our
+ R+ T$ @0 \0 ?4 d7 W$ K2 i* ladmission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students
( J$ a) n( y$ O. X G=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after 8 Q. R- ]9 H& e
tuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just 6 R" T# P( A: h6 u* G& [
imagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am
0 m ?3 K& d) [3 E6 O4 Tgetting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of
; x5 e. H' A- H N) ~4 k: r1 Dus) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was c) r, v0 @' V: c y5 {
admitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.

Also have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of
6 M# e8 i% `! Y) o$ q5 M8 xAlberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants
8 m0 j' n/ b" i+ G3 efrom different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate $ r9 S% P. W. C4 _4 z- e9 @
students are the main pillars of research work at the university.

My objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention $ _! @! ?3 v3 h4 L9 q3 C- g
is to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and
' P: l& G% m$ p1 K4 M+ \% O; f }. W. Despecially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take

2 f$ Y! W8 E. p, z/ T" Vinitiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for $ w6 f9 w9 j7 D8 l( y0 m
graduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?" D" E& B0 _7 i
