Other costs of leaving have also increased and the university

) N) N$ n& G! P8 K: j) adifferential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this, 3 x+ c& p z# S6 U6 t9 u# o
the fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers
5 c2 W" g `* N) j& S/ @and most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were
/ ?* t7 ?! l# R0 N$ M8 z) I6 Oasked to look for a residence on open market.! s" C O" c _3 R( j2 J& b4 G6 J

While the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has , }" s% h5 b7 V1 }3 s! a) I4 ]3 T) D
increased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid
! R, J+ B a! z1 n/ T& Y' Gexactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our
' [! c5 t/ `$ f! c0 c. s- Madmission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students 1 D( h% |6 f. v9 m- S4 n
=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after

imagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am
% o& N/ Y2 D0 s! K% S2 Ngetting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of 3 H3 L& ]( t" | E/ L0 q' Z. q
us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was 0 I$ ?; m. Q9 i2 B# i% O
admitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.5 h, h. ^4 x' K9 g

Also have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of 5 @' `5 L4 k0 A6 d% t
Alberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants - w2 e2 K! j8 } {
from different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate 2 ~1 m7 q. A* d
students are the main pillars of research work at the university.: u" [) t' Q7 l; z# U7 y+ s
% C. e8 R, a$ t9 ]+ p4 jMy objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention
! c/ ` H7 i" _4 S8 T F: Zis to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and - {! G+ M& g/ E* {- g x8 P5 Q7 L
especially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take. Q! j2 c: Z* p6 T n
* {1 b- }* \# s6 K& k$ L/ S
initiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for ' Y' _) |( y' w/ t1 K3 }. Y4 N1 p1 ]
graduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?
