When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and

680 CAD(everything was included), believe it or not the same apartment

is more than 1300 CAD now.(I still have a copy of the contract and for

While I was paying 340CAD/month for more than a year, I抦 paying , o N& N7 Z1 Z% m& e
600CAD/month plus utilities right now, some thing around 700CAD/month.

Other costs of leaving have also increased and the university " G6 R4 W! b, Z( H
increases the tuition fee by few percent every year and international + D& { \/ d7 i q# O, [
differential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this,
* F1 a2 S" `- _9 n6 W5 j0 ?% Ythe fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers " X: U- t! ~' q
and most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were ' e- F# W/ A' a% H
asked to look for a residence on open market.

While the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has " }* c1 q3 T5 e3 ]- `- L: t# Q% n
increased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid
# B, B4 P- y. wexactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our
l S$ V$ H& G7 X5 Kadmission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students
* N+ s: L9 \- F5 { u. b# H9 a) |=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after
/ N( F8 T$ a& A' Ituition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just
1 M4 ~+ J, j* Q0 `& ^. z7 x& jimagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am
. H2 G% D; j+ {+ D% Ugetting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of ( y- b& k+ a4 C8 ]3 l1 o- z& e- k
us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was # i" Y$ A0 t. P- a" q
admitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.0 u W. w, N4 { O
5 b$ B& p% R( ]/ ^+ m8 g* l2 rAlso have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of 6 G9 U3 ^" F2 X9 z( s3 j! U
Alberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants
+ N2 h% _/ ~" A# G+ a* q7 t; [from different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate
6 B8 {3 ]$ L4 }! astudents are the main pillars of research work at the university.$ p( Y2 _. @* w, ^. o( w

My objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention
) s: S. n& K! _8 N5 b3 [is to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and
. z' `2 L" ?9 L2 ]especially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take
7 ?/ d0 e1 X& D& j# Z3 l & O* o1 f8 ~7 f1 q
initiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for & R: `, v7 |* N4 @& R
graduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?
