. _, ^- U# M& T1 l9 W- `It seems in this case only befit from building house by yourself ( I mean you build the house as General Contractor, not buy the house from the builder) is you can have your design.

you are absolutely right, I think. Based on my little experience, purchasing pre-owned homes is not as flexible as lots of people think. Different builder has different policies and some are ridiculous......
