CHIEF RETURNING OFFICER

Remuneration: $6,032.00 contract

% p5 M! i; k( H: q" e/ _( mJOB SUMMARY:  The Chief Returning Officer reports to the President of  / M) e3 `& Q4 f
the Students' Union and oversees all electoral logistics as per Bylaw  
) @3 J; M3 h" @, r% P5 t; u2000.  The Chief Returning Officer shall be recommended to Students'  ( [. E8 U+ }. j) M) D
Council in the manner set out in the Council Administration Committee  # Y. A$ ^! r6 u! T7 g' y
Standing Orders by April 15 and serve from May 1 to April 30 of the  & Z$ @, O. A( m+ b5 `
year following their appointment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:! D3 ]* A- [, J# W; K# ]& p

1) To run the elections as per Bylaws 2000
8 W* i, }4 f. k% A  o/ r! d
8 g4 s! I+ g0 r& i* S" Z, z2) To run referenda/plebiscites as per Bylaw 2000.% m6 G7 ~( j4 \/ D
& S0 w4 f7 t8 ?: s" x0 ?) D, F
3) To choose the Deputy Returning Officer(s) and assign their duties.$ L; `" a0 g; k5 C

$ Y# [- a9 ?" `: c4) To organize polls during elections/referenda, including appointing  % |8 L0 G5 b! X$ {$ V: n# n2 J
adequate poll staff and situating polls at appropriate locations  0 R. P+ g1 o9 t) s/ ?% Q) y
across campus, and advertising the poll locations./ L' j( t% W: v' m) h

, O4 W, d* Y3 |- x) j: b* K2 X5) To oversee the physical count of the ballots during elections/
$ Y  {! I$ k% l( N: F# }referenda.
% Y; O, p( m* h2 }
! R, Z$ o% `. U1 V6) To report the result of an election/referendum to the appropriate  # ?7 ^3 L  C1 i* J1 Z4 Z
parties.  E* g6 K( `5 q, w. m

7 I; f6 C% t. D! a7) To facilitate classroom speaking arrangements during an election/
$ l2 T  Z: j7 g- L( Sreferendum.; T' v; U# v$ T
& p7 S3 T2 [4 U* w3 H
To enforce budgetary regulations as stipulated in the Elections  ' n9 l4 n0 Y6 v* B
Bylaw 2000.& Q6 z1 Y8 c5 b, M, F7 H, h6 C8 V3 X

+ L9 a/ {+ E! {9 t. ]- r10) To be available to all parties during elections/referenda for a  ! [5 _+ m7 S- W0 z3 K. l/ G/ X1 r
minimum of four (4) working hours a day, between Monday to Friday,  3 n) f5 E  d2 u# G
from the first working day after nominations close until the last day    s4 w( W+ a  c( e
of voting.  These hours are to be posted in advance.
% w! B" q: I" N
5 x3 W+ d' u# n1 l% d" ]* O  V3 Y11) To act as the arbitrator in any dispute which may arise during  5 s$ s" X8 C) k! [2 u4 H
the course of an election/referendum.$ l, O: r' j! Q
4 J3 b7 a* v3 u# Q! f
12) To ensure that a cost effective and accurate ballot counting  8 x/ s& D2 e7 F/ W  s: B
process is in place.
0 W) B+ F: P# Z) ^/ z5 L
0 V. e0 j; H, t! v0 V13) To submit to Students' Council, prior to April 30, a final report  0 o- Y, N; U" _+ m
of activities and recommendations.

14) To organize a minimum of one (1) forum to be held during the week  2 f) L7 `$ e! C. N- s+ c3 A- T
of campaigning.2 Y" c& n' \( S: r  `& y

. t1 X  M) u" y! e7 s! o3 {15) Perform other job related duties as required by the Council

( X+ _, {! r/ WQUALIFICATIONS:5 d4 z8 A0 B: [7 d& U! b
4 y* u* p( n* b
1) Must be an undergrad student registered in at least one (1) course  
6 ]2 R% {+ }9 Z9 tfor each of the terms of Winter Session and shall be a full Students'  % `# S7 @0 O) x. ]) c
Union member.  e, n  `" F" S' h+ R
. T2 b9 S0 K7 I0 b1 h
2) Must have some experience in student elections.( Y/ F% e3 M/ V9 b  c

* S. ]% N2 O5 O& L$ {3) Shall not concurrently hold a position on Students' Council, or  ; s0 J) c3 U+ W- M* n* G  T
any of its standing boards, committees, or any other paid position  
& b$ |% x. R  B1 `- }. m3 ~with the Students' Union.) l8 S# d1 t: T: r- h& r/ S
  u0 e6 x# ?) j2 E% T/ n' U
4) Willingness and ability to work varying hours.

5) Excellent project management skills are required.
