Today I was volunteering at a post office. A man in an old jacket with uncombed hair came to the counter. He had a wallet in his hand, and put it on the counter. He told me:
# Z8 y+ o7 g' d9 L5 D$ d7 j! G"I am going to send it back".
2 Y$ M5 n/ u8 s) z, ?I did not understand what he meant by "it", because usually people would send a letter or a parcel back to the sender, and I did not see he had any of those. So I asked him:2 B' S2 ]; g' \0 Z' q0 Y8 ?8 ^' Z5 o
"I am sorry, what are you sending back?"
. ~" w: U+ t8 [8 `# L: e( w7 BHe said, "the Wallet, I am sending back the wallet." Then he added: "I am going to pay the postage."
& C* P, p m% _: {"Oh, you found a wallet, and you are going to send it back to the person who lost it?" 0 E) h# O' q L6 F+ G
"Yes, I did."+ Y5 \' \( f% `- @
Finally I understood: this dishevelled man found a wallet, and he was going to return it to the owner by post.
+ ~) V; Q% A$ M( ~He took the ID card from the wallet, and showed me the address of the loser of the wallet. I saw there were several one-hundred bills in the wallet. ; |% b2 Y% H$ d$ q9 V$ q
"Are you going to take some money from the wallet to pay the postage?"
3 q9 b. f6 P" b# }. e+ ]"No, I am not. I do not do those things."
, \6 M7 d4 B* I' q8 |$ P/ i. RHe took out his wallet, which was nearly worn-out, small, and almost empty. There were some coins inside. - V. h2 Q6 ^9 O# a6 N# `
I gave him a bubbled envelope, and instructed him where to write the addresses. He wrote the owner's address, but stopped at writing a return address. He asked:
' v( O/ z, f2 p* R& N E5 V"Is it okay that I do not write this part?"
# t8 ~$ M( I& g+ M* }"Yes, you may." I thought he must want to be a nameless hero. But he said:* a! a, o# E; o+ L, u& n# `, X7 e' p* u
"I do not have an address."
' l% f+ v' S. ] j4 v. rI was surprised: "oh, where do you live?". F% b; ~2 Y- w# T0 l7 B
He did not look up, and said: "I do not have a home."
! h9 E2 ?9 S* ~My heart had a sudden jump. I realized that this is a homeless man who found money but was sending it back to the person who lost it. : e2 X j1 {4 g3 s1 F* s' G
He did not a posses a home, but he had a big heart. He had the precious fortune of being a man of integrity. + X. f* D& F' n; W V. D, W
