Today I was volunteering at a post office. A man in an old jacket with uncombed hair came to the counter. He had a wallet in his hand, and put it on the counter. He told me:
& X6 I- P G7 u$ N v"I am going to send it back". 0 @7 t* H J9 V; B9 m6 R. ?5 i
I did not understand what he meant by "it", because usually people would send a letter or a parcel back to the sender, and I did not see he had any of those. So I asked him:3 c4 s6 _0 v5 }% F% ^7 {
"I am sorry, what are you sending back?" . T3 C+ g$ I5 n1 c6 b4 Z
He said, "the Wallet, I am sending back the wallet." Then he added: "I am going to pay the postage."
6 m1 S( e* A% u5 R4 U) K1 }8 a1 B# b"Oh, you found a wallet, and you are going to send it back to the person who lost it?"
3 v* G0 N f* X"Yes, I did."- y# G \& K! `. v( d
Finally I understood: this dishevelled man found a wallet, and he was going to return it to the owner by post.
) |# q! ?, w) m3 X3 s5 z) v* lHe took the ID card from the wallet, and showed me the address of the loser of the wallet. I saw there were several one-hundred bills in the wallet.
8 Q) q, y9 @; N+ z( e"Are you going to take some money from the wallet to pay the postage?"
8 `# e' N) W# q- g$ q' a) t6 P"No, I am not. I do not do those things."/ q# W* V' G, P6 @/ t1 m
He took out his wallet, which was nearly worn-out, small, and almost empty. There were some coins inside. & r. f; L! N2 l8 d, e; P" y
I gave him a bubbled envelope, and instructed him where to write the addresses. He wrote the owner's address, but stopped at writing a return address. He asked:/ L# g* A0 p$ p. w/ F
"Is it okay that I do not write this part?"
9 R" ]7 ?5 i5 Q"Yes, you may." I thought he must want to be a nameless hero. But he said:
+ l, t2 w1 }' p8 O1 h! x9 T! P"I do not have an address."
! v$ }5 q5 j! O/ K2 aI was surprised: "oh, where do you live?"
6 L5 U" N/ d: ZHe did not look up, and said: "I do not have a home."
7 \# y+ D5 D. {% Y4 c* aMy heart had a sudden jump. I realized that this is a homeless man who found money but was sending it back to the person who lost it. # E+ p9 w' C) f0 v. ^* ` S
He did not a posses a home, but he had a big heart. He had the precious fortune of being a man of integrity.
