In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community) j. D. `8 f. K
Engagement Training.( A8 a( r; J8 g
6 }+ \( V( L- N3 F A! v/ N$ FWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
1 g0 w8 d# X- I5 o* j' P: w! D% U(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
( O& r, n, w) u0 I* @groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
4 v+ i3 \. D( A% c; _, F' \# A2 `together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy$ K! V( B1 E, F; d% J
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

" s( `$ M* N3 _. k3 ~- u8 P" `2 f. v5 pPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years! U l9 |7 x; u3 P
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter0 O3 D }( I( u0 a5 o" g
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
0 P# r* R7 J- J3 ointernational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
9 @9 e6 P" p+ N4 o/ pthey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
/ J# \/ l% ~7 \! l @" R3 oIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the o' S& ?, ~2 y' z
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
$ f# L2 W/ a4 U3 C% qinternational peacekeeping operation.0 }! d. P/ _4 M! |: J; r2 c8 z
* f/ N6 P5 i6 }. A! ^
This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
7 R6 F1 X4 C8 r( A( z2 U0 uown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people& K4 C3 A3 t' |3 ^5 v
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
+ D \, S+ X! [' t* ]) iscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and5 u9 h) {/ Q: `
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
0 B! O2 t, }; U2 a. }improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
- A* I! e2 x" A, F1 m4 Y* _and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!
8 J" c9 ~4 h) {; c; Z8 x# J0 [% S% s+ W' k
According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the b) O6 e& H }
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole8 [- F5 _ H, X
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the0 I( m/ Q+ V; K1 G6 ]0 f- u1 T( h; [
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.( N) q& k& |$ T) ?2 N
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
& p; p. R5 n0 Hso we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."8 v" i: U4 i" ~% k! i, }) x% u
