I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.

' v0 O9 W1 F+ ~- cWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
, Q9 `8 f/ u: X* w# j3 J3 m+ O(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood) H: m/ r( q. H7 P& T# D. r+ r
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
* v6 r J% z) l. J1 xtogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy2 ~) F& Z0 M0 v& b1 P0 I9 k
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.1 j3 h- o! d9 ^8 X6 w" I3 O

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
# G' l' N* i( X& fPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
, i, L& d' |; W! u* Qof fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter: J+ K% s+ h) e/ X
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
9 G# O* X" ~; R& Hinternational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
9 ?" t, L* R) a3 D6 F+ c" zthey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
4 K" t: {5 K. g, q& E, i# cIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
: ^! L. a: y( \island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
8 G7 L5 Z* N, @/ O- I# ]3 ]international peacekeeping operation.

This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their7 W- }( ^- K B- y, P
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
8 ?: m1 q$ \7 k8 B; mwho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
/ |5 F& Z* s9 M3 m2 Iscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and% g x3 Z" P8 a8 H3 Y) |! e
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems) v4 T1 J% [7 i) L: u
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
6 C# h! v9 H; [6 W+ `and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!
; O/ S i, \& V
: t) z1 ^) S8 j7 n! ?According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the* \: \1 X6 D" w g& I" ]
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
- i1 c* M# P9 t4 R) ~6 {process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the+ A/ B/ F! S7 x5 G4 L
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
# V5 [5 N# {% N% C8 {/ ^Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
* b/ a1 d, K! `1 n$ D8 S9 mso we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."1 w3 ~6 R( R$ ?2 p
