I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.
0 V0 z! `, l2 B8 U+ ]# s& `In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community# N- o, h6 F+ D5 l% [
Engagement Training.

We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,9 \" a, Q7 {9 F" l$ E0 U
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood b1 H1 d* l# |2 n0 R& R4 g: Q3 R+ D
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work/ E5 B- _6 c4 c4 n
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
4 w5 l3 R5 b2 `7 }# J9 q5 aCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.4 \% v* J3 e. ^& o* Z" j4 b

Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years5 V+ }2 e5 B6 ~
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
2 ]) A6 a; `% z$ Q4 |/ M0 [conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
6 s/ z$ a9 B2 c9 \( t$ Ointernational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:6 M9 X: J5 K1 V( {: b- n8 k
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter7 F: B5 k0 C6 x6 N7 I
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the1 J' v9 L* a# Q7 I) r) g
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
$ E2 i" [5 W' \: W) z! D# |international peacekeeping operation.
8 I- T0 L5 E0 `, p+ X! z: @! u H" K0 U; U. d; o
This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their" B! |" o8 w9 t# ^# t Q
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
% K2 _, `( X4 v: d' cwho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
8 p, }: B* ^5 o% Xscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
" k: z0 @/ N, E7 T) x+ Q4 [ p- k6 ^Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems6 }' q( U* G& s4 o; X
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs, W4 W% n/ M1 E c
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!

X/ {+ P( i9 t, E" pAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
8 k5 O" q5 d7 }; G' N' Asuccess of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
1 y! R& ~0 x: D# j) Tprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
' x* X' w7 f; x5 Nhands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
6 T0 N0 R# a! L$ j: DAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,& h0 S7 F! h ?5 Z0 U8 |
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
