　　North country scene:

' D# u0 O3 ^1 R# N7 \- Z3 M　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,

5 V& q  z7 w9 \9 \  g! ^　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.
+ n- w: x6 _( K
　　Both sides of the Great Wall

& O  r) P- g9 s　　One single white immensity.
9 p: M/ U3 J$ F9 ^; k3 o7 i  ^" n
　　The Yellow River"s swift current
2 r* W) }) r4 E
　　Is stilled from end to end.
- m! Y% F/ ^9 z
' n7 ^( e: @4 z' i$ q5 I  H　　The mountains dance like silver snakes
. J! \6 @5 z8 U0 r: S4 `% \
* R0 Q, s2 s* s% m　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

/ B% c+ d/ k( W! y5 v, R; B6 v　　Vying with heaven in stature.

　　On a fine day, the land,

　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

　　Grows more enchanting.
! G/ z3 X' I  E% a5 F! g% C
　　This land so rich in beauty
% `. h* U' x! J: z/ P3 w* v
　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti
) m! X. [% D' w& r; N% f5 q
　　Were lacking in literary grace,

) X5 p$ P+ W' p2 H　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu
" h2 C) M  C6 v' H! r" o" G
　　Had little poetry in their souls;
8 Q: O# \1 a6 w6 l　　And Genghis Khan,
) e4 M1 @# v1 l" w9 k, E9 W& R. g
" R' x# K" M  t- ?( M) i　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,

( }2 K2 Q6 n) t2 M　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

+ [7 q; a& Q6 X: a　　All are past and gone!

7 o9 X5 H" S' z1 s& k( K* a　　For truly great men

　　Look to this age alone.
