谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语0 n: Q! d7 q+ E0 e) `) n

: n- P0 n3 ~4 O' v3 C2 t# ?. w2 f* {1 P# `5 T9 s
在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯
. ]! [3 ^. X; p( u# S- U! [3 {* G之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。
! ?+ G# Z8 Q  g, Z若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!" L$ P2 Y0 ~  p7 n7 @0 U& O
1 m7 Z! ~6 p( `! w' X
(1) empty suit:
% b9 i+ h6 k0 f1 \! n# V指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。
( Y& h: \7 i3 H/ \(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)
9 B2 \) M& p; m; T7 ?) O例如:5 z* A4 U2 Y3 B5 T8 n; I, E
An empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.
1 k$ p& n+ Z5 c4 m(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)  S7 {% r# e: \/ n; V
Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.! C1 N  D( ^" Y: {
(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)) A, Z8 p0 i4 ?( _7 L
虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:  s; e6 [" I0 l& j' d
The company is filled with a lot of empty suits.
. l. F2 w% Y- @- W5 l3 ?3 [' j(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)
3 {+ v* C" d% I: k(2) fair-haired boy:: t7 n6 {8 B% ?% E: n% r/ F
指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)
, y; m* F& ~. a9 S/ g/ E(通常用单数,当名词用)" ?$ {; C0 [8 S- E  K
例如:
& z" ]3 }. y0 DMr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.; f7 h" [  G) i, Z& B+ C! L
( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)5 w, u* m* k% `. h/ a- B
Not being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions./ B2 b6 G, d+ v& o6 v
(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)
% s8 a# W; l2 T0 x有时也可用复数:0 Q7 c( f) L% v% R+ N& U& _
Mr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.
2 t  L+ s# `5 Q) a. n0 S  j3 y(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)( N; O2 N. f& D8 i1 H3 k
Fair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.
1 }2 R, }- R7 V4 k. v6 [  W(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)
& f% V. a0 L8 l" P(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)3 ^7 L) E/ A/ `
(3) fishing expedition:! B) V; m, `; V. R
为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)
  l( q" e4 y2 i$ D(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)/ A3 o+ ^1 i. b/ b  u
例如:8 S1 W1 k( B( T0 n* l6 i' f& Z: w: m
The judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.
7 Q6 N# ]3 D3 x# v% U(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)
2 f7 y: U7 o' S6 _" E5 ]/ sThe police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.5 y4 x) P$ B9 K$ s/ A! o& v
(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)
$ o+ F" K! N% S( x7 h(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)! G9 C9 ~* z$ p% \( F. ^5 ]
The reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.
  e' D) U) a5 F- o8 h+ F1 {(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)' C  e  Q: _8 J
偶尔也有人用复数:# a3 o2 T& O" W4 j# q4 t
Several fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office." W% h2 e% J) ?: V2 T. Q  o; G
(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)6 e' n2 }7 `  `! w8 X) S2 j* V
(4) filthy rich:
0 T3 H& K( x. D* G# }7 O" H$ I意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)
6 h, z3 j! @) j( A(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)# [7 t5 P: v  b, R+ I+ d/ \
多半当形容词用。例如:, z' ~( q: U9 q. E( j- I* q+ k
With a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich." \! H. V( x1 Z7 k, ^
( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)
+ u; o& b9 R* Y! {Despite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.( O9 Y6 I8 k% q. f' M% {
(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)' C3 B8 ^& d& L. u
A filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.0 g+ Y4 s) ?& m3 N) c0 D
(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)
+ z: ^* [, E: F$ e& e  d: }9 A: iFilthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.
; h+ S& K; @* [* C) W9 r(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)) f8 G! f# F3 J( n( N
(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法)" P8 P1 A/ Y! F1 u1 }+ a
(5) fairy godmother:
( x$ s2 j, p: ~1 K: M  j3 h指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)
$ C% g; n# H: n% z7 v2 {(多半指有钱的女人)
  n& |% {3 {$ M7 t" C7 O(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:, Q4 K# G; d2 y
Mr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.* Z$ g+ T: z; r: a2 S
(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)
9 s: f2 y, Q! z+ O  @After lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.
6 b% @0 E$ f$ {" Z6 E(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)
$ w7 C5 l, ?2 y- K有时也用复数:% a3 q8 W9 A, y$ M4 U" @/ u5 t
Only business women can act as fairy godmothers.
3 Q' P! s8 K8 G+ ~+ m' i/ h( S2 i(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)7 W9 R9 ?4 Y7 z* `7 K& h1 v
In Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.- l# s: n5 S( T
(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)

% u0 ]% |8 d8 V6 D6)eye opener:" E2 s- f0 x7 [* F
指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)2 g8 H3 e) O8 p8 @
(当名词用;通常只用单数)
8 h/ \% d$ C$ h7 ^5 X0 \( J例如:
7 P) D2 g/ C& H! S. h- SYour wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.! N+ H2 m* f6 ]8 L5 u0 Z
(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)
. r, F" Z* X; n, w: Z* NMr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.
7 ~. x4 N+ ~; L$ U4 [(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)
5 H4 p' c8 Q- V. d3 r7 @5 Y$ fThe popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.
- g$ Y3 O2 }% @9 A5 `(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)% F" p) P& u8 N: C6 o0 K+ u) y
Some American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.4 y7 o' P! x8 U1 o1 m5 z6 J- F
(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)" Y' ?& h* a/ n  @% _
(7) hot dog:) g# K( g; _0 F) p
指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)4 Y' D/ k$ j/ D
例如:
% V! j* t/ W3 p! SSome young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.+ |* w+ M2 m& m
(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)7 k, G6 A) T" B' w1 T7 z" p0 A, W
(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)
- y0 D% C% s" w1 b9 B: |In front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.
2 c6 L: `1 j  i$ t) d& K0 p" N(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)
3 J, C2 i$ ]" E/ {: _(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)
, o+ `- q+ h6 x' q: K! O& V: hDuring the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.5 O/ a6 e1 N' Z
(在空军表演时,一位飞行员做惊险的飞行动作。); F$ e/ F+ ]0 I) }& m0 h
也指真正的热狗食物:

(在美国热狗是一种受欢迎的快餐。): i! Y& Q+ Q/ [2 U! \; {+ Z
也可表达欣赏的心情:
' c7 z/ U: J+ ?9 X! X8 JHot dog ! What great news for me.
9 |3 M) \5 F1 i( h' u& d+ M. d; V(真棒!对我来说是好消息。)
; M: M: i9 l+ B+ A% e(8)eager beaver:1 c6 ]5 F9 g- ~# s) y- S8 B
指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)
8 P. Y1 q) i5 g2 C( u; [% A6 v(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)
3 O8 ?2 Y1 X  {5 E9 b4 E(当名词用,可指男女)8 k) V2 _# ?2 w: \& }
例如:7 n5 Q! C: t0 P6 s( R* z( N1 y" ~
John seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.
7 ^7 k9 j! a6 O2 p& ~(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)
# f3 c" ^% G$ M! Q$ ^4 _Being an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.
" k; n$ M+ l7 b3 Q* F(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)
" V2 ~$ ~  Z+ R) `8 q' X0 Y/ t( PDoes Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?
% H/ `, V( Z$ G# ^" j(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)
7 O+ X. m3 T  CYou may find some eager beavers in any organizations.* ~9 E" J& v+ u2 {4 z  t
(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。)
, E. u% ?& q3 ~# ]! N7 h(9)doubting Thomas:% P  a- @+ ~  w' a
这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)
3 W. {& t8 e. z(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)/ V' |5 H" s& {
(当名词用)% `' D' y/ A) ^4 h# _4 e: g2 l; \/ S2 _) Q
例如:7 d& I" u- k4 R/ P/ a, o! Y
I am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.9 _4 J* x5 X9 b. I5 o
(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)
  j9 k1 J: D2 f4 [$ D# [* uThere must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.) ^1 {; Y* S" C% G3 P1 Z- o  X
(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)
" ?6 l) ^3 z! g1 m! s) B也可用复数:* i' ^1 u, S* a2 {7 U# }; B+ K
My friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.
, Q* p1 K; P; v4 C(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。)
8 p5 O. e3 z& ?: b( h, gIf there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.; K& o3 W! m2 J; A, ^, {; i/ @% |
(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。); A( T. ], j  X% o! @1 h! Y! R7 P
(10)dragon lady:
- W1 D9 l# d* o指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)
: m# ~; A7 j  ?6 g' r8 [+ v5 o例如:9 ~9 I  U; {; w3 O, E" i( W, E9 m
The chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.+ h2 v6 V6 O* N
(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)
% v& ]# u5 \7 [4 M' v7 r$ oI am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.# C* u* o: S& p$ G" I. ^  I1 K
(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)
/ n) |: k8 C% C" e, G2 D4 pShould your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?6 V& l( P% c0 D9 Y1 q
(假如你的女友成了凶恶的女人,你要与她分手吗?)

注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
