! s3 \; j" ?. v, }0 \6 R4 _; OI am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
% u# v* ^, Z; n7 }am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
) @4 S& K/ K+ v. E6 econcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and, R4 B: h6 ~* C Z: h
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
6 [) d- u+ F5 Q$ L3 Lwill acquire language earlier and faster.
* I/ B% @! ^( Q& B2 w9 `. l
: \6 S3 q* w- N. ^5 rIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
! x( {9 F0 `% S2 r30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
8 X' }+ E% G3 y, {: Rvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or* L# V+ H! o% X& o
simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
0 B9 C; N! |) o: `. Jmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your7 i$ b9 {# ^3 F' o$ u5 k" W
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.0 b- W7 @: P: B7 ~0 p* z: B0 q- Z$ z- [
% ]; ^- v1 L1 b( K
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
2 e0 [" `. U4 D8 wbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
4 _; L9 @( U7 e z) sthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.! @' v3 z9 l6 [! \+ G# l% h
/ x X! K% z$ N0 F U
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously1 F2 z; [1 @3 G. h
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby0 N) k: H9 e6 a/ H% r, R
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
3 B" g2 @1 u, \# D' u4 cthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.! y" @& }) w; u7 S: T+ J! ^- l# u
2 Y& ]" E# ] d( jFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,' D H" i( s2 C: a* @7 W2 Y/ t4 w" F4 L
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.- M! y. M! j" Z+ |" \
( L; m5 P- c# t, Z8 O* w% vThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done* s$ }( J2 Z" B- K
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
' s4 ~! O! W/ k: Q; H' j+ `" d; Ois 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
' R6 k2 w }" k) J" g) R9 j3 H( Gtake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate7 `& m, ?1 C/ c( Q P- t
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.

$ n% o1 n0 U$ }; K/ Tare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
. E' I' r$ H o9 `video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used' E6 f0 J. e6 V1 p5 [0 ^
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and+ G7 ^1 f% q3 ?0 G1 S- n$ `8 M( K
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
; p! p" m; V- s1 Land teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of3 I* H e! q) X0 b, J# _8 x
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
+ D0 x# @" j4 ~7 I/ N. Rjournals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
