1 p# w, D+ h: @$ D5 |I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
( ~4 Z4 A6 o' k% Eam conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
9 _0 U' B# E- N3 iconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and v3 s; {; E' ` {. K& _
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
2 U' d+ w0 u3 Q9 s' Pwill acquire language earlier and faster.
! `: j' U( m2 o$ A3 p+ l
: N/ S# g: N/ ]# Y0 v1 _In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
) N9 u5 ^7 ], n9 k30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
: L, c' W( h$ x$ ]7 X5 X; e7 Xvideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
0 T8 x' S X! isimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you- U4 I( l) a. i7 r6 @) z) }
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your/ l/ u9 K8 Q* C: s. w% [
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.+ i: x% X8 O4 p2 T
; J4 f$ }, G3 y3 S2 k
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
6 U' P# S9 r/ g6 E& I0 ]+ X; Ebehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
1 \# ^7 M; ?; A2 q L& V1 w1 {those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.7 |, N' ~- E9 b

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
+ g4 Q, k0 H( V5 i$ [9 G, u2 jproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
$ H9 ^! a& X% P5 {/ h$ rknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
3 ~3 @: r' P: pthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.8 p, M) k1 {* ^- B% N$ c
* F+ [- {7 ^6 YFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
+ d0 @2 I3 C& P+ w& R; m/ Uthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.) [* g2 w5 H! S7 \/ q9 J) H

The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
& I% v) e: r% P3 H! H3 K: E2 uover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she
. W" w% A" I: j. v$ B3 Qis 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will/ J# ^# t6 x5 w' i0 _3 v! e8 E
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
0 |7 ]2 v3 O7 W% X @' G/ }in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and( e* I2 J9 A5 S- y
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,) B0 k G. B) h1 ^+ @
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of5 g1 K4 c( F |2 s" Y1 p# Z
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific1 y, k2 Z1 J z$ _% U
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
