I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
; S: P) V2 ^$ w4 R, \+ |8 T& X6 H6 {am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
3 I1 i# ~9 `; @; Uconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
) S/ h% g! C2 Z1 R* o% Xattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
- ~- P7 x, l# k. ]; _; I6 uwill acquire language earlier and faster.* u- i8 @0 [) w! A1 I) o7 }

In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
* H* t; _5 }: Q30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop3 ]9 ^3 h( k% T+ P1 c6 E& Q" Z: @% g1 i
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
& N) O- }/ v8 }1 m0 r9 A1 ~simply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you7 @5 G F8 ~7 v0 V
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your: F+ @4 F9 t: e# Q
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.6 X% m5 r: E" b
9 e3 l' |8 u+ ~1 F1 p( {2 p$ ]' S: _
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
" v! i: i4 f0 D8 ?3 I- wbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
6 t0 A% t$ o$ D3 i L4 othose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously+ ?; a, O( H( d2 W$ F2 v9 F
produce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
0 a0 A. }- B: o( h& f; J2 I. e* Nknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to6 Q$ O. N5 d7 r
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.' j) p/ L' Y+ H0 x

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,7 ~) k" a/ }9 e& O
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

) h" q9 I. E- n# p* c1 WThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done f% v" k% v4 k
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she6 y/ v& h/ i0 ~: R/ U. I: z- O
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
0 L3 }! x0 U- T5 W# k. A9 |9 Ttake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate7 b, F5 S! H) H
on the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
/ D/ c! }2 u- B4 \, HAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
8 ~' W; {% b. B8 [are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show. r6 l8 u% N2 }2 {1 s; I, j. K+ ~
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used* n5 D( T+ p" \/ \+ X* x- M
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and/ w5 V- b7 } @, w- m
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
* z0 w" X; s$ k/ F1 r0 t0 band teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of
9 x% ^0 A/ v/ n tHuman Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
6 j, {% N+ u `! O4 }journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child f+ f% I' W6 ~; v( C" h
