Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall5 d. s& Q) i) F$ D* N
not do any of the following:
" ^8 P" V9 Q; \+ L(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor( ?/ c- G' d: o! S- H0 B
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;. ]+ X" J2 J4 k; L# [+ } T& h8 c
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor# M& ~6 }# a. z& }- S( @
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
* _1 r" |6 n8 q: H1 I; R(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
3 z; v5 S. V7 F+ ~( S- v; vpermit another person" @- m/ P2 l% M. ]+ {* F$ `
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
+ O8 Q. f/ [ f( ?$ s(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
+ ?& X: E5 A4 P, @. Lunless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle; F" \. l. J1 g! H+ _# m# E: I# {
(d) give or lend a financial! q! f& a, T, @2 J8 C, E
responsibility card or a copy of it: e% i# V' k7 N6 k* q7 B6 a' v; f3 y
to a person not entitled to have that financial; H& C. u1 ~- r7 F% r3 p9 S6 l
responsibility card or copy.

* p1 e0 q( Y9 z7 H, @. d# v2 y0 _5 hIf a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
% a# y0 w: k1 O0 u) Y6 _$ @without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of, x4 `. r* e" }
the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
! d* O3 W+ g# B/ x. ?(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is1 P8 a; e; ^! y. z+ y, @8 s* a
not an insured motor vehicle.

0 _' T/ `" z% v9 [If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
+ o: B% y8 S! CAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this
* v" v# g4 B3 G; F) A, wsection.

Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
/ c- z7 m$ R# p: N$ X/ \. efinancial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
% L2 N1 h% R! G$ [! @6 l7 hInsurance Act
7 Y- _* w* p7 H+ K; Lby an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy+ N' N( U" x5 B& k! R" a b8 Y9 ^
outside Alberta.+ B7 S: m" W1 n+ c

: U! f" L7 @& L( l7 _ ^7 gA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
- N( H$ i, ], i5 _) P! a(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,
. \) l5 a. a8 X# u. P(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500" ~, w* ?( E) B$ \
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
5 K" F4 T) M* h! Uimprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
. q/ s- w# r& [3 @ Z, R0 q3 J" h& |8 bmore than 6 months
h7 F }' g+ X5 I5 Q# fMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
