; A& y$ I1 W+ n
  [+ |: o( _8 E(1) You can not teach an old dog new tricks ── 照字面意思是:你不能教老狗学新的把戏。 (Some people find it impossible to change their ways; or older people can not accept the changes or new ideas.) W( M& H/ t  e& K/ u

; B$ Z5 U" k' X6 @Stop trying to teach an old dog new tricks; you are just wasting time.(别想教老狗新花样,你只是白花时间。)
6 R" p6 z" Z* KAre you trying to teach an old dog new tricks? & u" Z% R! [* z- n7 L$ t0 Z* j: ^" T
He is impossible. Don't try to teach an old dog new tricks.(impossible
- ?! V3 e  f& m0 B8 _I have tried teaching an old dog new tricks, but it doesn't work.(注:教狗不直接用 teach,要用 try to teach。) : N: i$ ?6 Z# N- x& p

0 g' N# s! v% d1 |5 m(2) All that glitters is not gold. ── 字面的意思是:所有能闪闪发光的东西,未必都是黄金。换言之,就是许多外表漂亮的物品,未必都是真正的宝贝。因为也许是金玉其外,败絮其中,或是中看不中用。(not every beautiful thing is valuable.  也有人说成:All is not gold that glitters. (glitter 是动词,意思是闪闪发光或光彩夺目。) 也可用在句子里: ) a2 z  v% w& {

  j9 T, N  Q) d& Z. JI told my students that all that glitters is not gold.   [9 Q8 Z# F7 e: P6 `1 L
6 ~* _8 b) Y3 Z# s2 C# b! _7 X+ l. }

: |" z8 C# Y$ W) p
- G7 h4 H+ |, H# Y(3) Pepole (或 Those) who live in glass houses should not throw stones (或 rocks) ── 照字面的意思是:住在玻璃屋里的人不可丢石头。 (Nobody is perfect, so we should not criticize others.)
/ k+ F8 t' G. t# w, j- R1 g0 h+ ~" a
Don't judge a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes.
  {7 E4 v4 L* ]% t1 V7 [(judge = criticize; have walked a mile in his shoes = have understood his situation well enough)
: x) N* I. \  H4 F9 e! c0 r另一句是:
8 h  |- O& W* _& e5 X& j1 q* @: ?7 m0 \
Judge not lest ye be judged. 就是: / x$ |: f2 l( g( N, W  d/ s
If you criticize others, you probably will be criticized ,too. % G. D) E! e0 U7 |4 J4 N! f$ \
" }& o7 O( M4 L4 B

, w0 M4 ]5 O: _- X/ q! w9 q5 G
* ?" Y7 y, y1 f(4) It is more blessed to give than to receive. ── 意思是:施比受更有福。也就是劝人多多行善,帮助他人。(blessed 是形容词,意思是幸福的,受尊敬的。)这句话不但可独立使用,也可用在不同的句子里:

+ O$ N5 v6 v# ?/ H2 c5 O  aDon't be so grumpy and pessimistic because every cloud has a silver lining.

' W( B* S$ N+ D8 Z1 n- f# C
. G+ ^9 f: U1 D1 S# F# hIf you are spending all your money on that stock, you are putting all your eggs in one basket.(假如你把所有的钱投资在一种股票上,那就太冒险了。)
