@% |* K9 i' S3 J8 M
2 L! ~+ h' x: H/ p$ b& h' H- b$ C
1. I couldn't care less. % h6 r( G( {9 g! ^" s6 M
2 e; Z2 I/ R: @8 |) T, z4 m3 q. s 这句话的意思是“我不在乎”,“缺乏兴趣”(lack of interest),也就是:I don''t care at all. 或 I don''t give a hoot. 例如:
) L& a" E2 r2 q- Z! f. J) T: k2 b* H7 }( e" U6 r6 N7 q0 G" x
What do you think of the budget-cut?(你对预算削减有何看法?)
& V5 z+ L$ b$ o. K. g |+ i/ h! L& v" W F: @' @' f. R
# b$ o9 F0 j% ^6 L2 x* { r1 h5 r R5 w! z i& O; G
How do you like Mr. Lee's political point of view?(你喜欢李先生的政见吗?) . G; T* v( G" X
4 J% J2 O4 d* d3 X I couldn't care less.(我才不在乎呢!) ! P* ^/ @( U8 o/ L8 v% w& y/ e
: N1 e9 D# l+ ~5 t3 k$ D8 J$ P. T( ]4 d: E7 ~
I couldn't care less about the promotion or pay raise.(我不在乎升级或加薪)
* T6 @6 X) y+ m2 \: E$ K+ l9 X" K! c" {. x: A$ C; X$ v+ \+ f
Yes, you do(care).
5 A, f2 P, y r+ R/ Q) v8 l
- ~# H/ N5 k* { 至于 I couldn't care more. 就是“我很在乎”(I care a lot.)或 I care deeply. 同理:
! a9 I/ w+ O! H
- A! c! d. ^1 m) ^4 ]* J: J: A I couldn't agree more.=I totally agree.(我完全同意)
0 z7 B* q3 f/ X0 R8 q5 G
, ?5 q) o' y3 Y I couldn't please you more.=I did my best to please you.(我尽量使你高兴)
0 E) @+ ]6 n: A& f7 f1 |0 x) x+ S/ |. B6 C7 |$ O9 r
I couldn't be more right.=I am totally right. 3 h8 O+ _4 _: s! n7 |/ ^
- o& V5 E1 x2 E+ f
/ d) g2 S, \6 k3 _ ?& k [- A) ?$ y2 i
I couldn't be more wrong.
7 v+ ^$ i O/ ]! ?
$ D/ G! + h+ Q. t; O# r3 ^' f
. R8 a* N: O- Q# U/ |
I could care less. = I care to some degree.(care 的程度可能减少)
. T' x! g: Z F2 z( v8 {/ U2 m
, c d+ M) k. y0 H/ [6 I I could care more.=I care some.(care的程度也许增加)(主词可用任何人称代名词:he, she, you, we, they 等。但只用 could,不用 can。) ) K! E* }' r {' c8 |
* O* f3 l" q0 q& A 2. No bones about it. ! L& O9 I+ \/ y( G) z4 m
: L4 s% ?; P/ z* j; f0 W
意思是:真实的,诚恳的(truly, sincerely or exactly),也就是 to make no bones about it.(bone 要加 s, it 是指 something)例如: ) i# s$ I! q* S1 r
+ ^6 T: {& ]9 }. l) f6 @
His wife is beautiful;no bones about it.(他的太太真是很漂亮)
' N& u# `4 _* j0 o+ a$ l1 ?3 z- @
Mr. A made no bones about it when he talked about abortion issue.(当 A 先生谈到堕胎问题时,他是诚恳的。)
, J" H, h! ~8 l" Z* O! c: Y
( q3 B& W! C% R& K" `) @$ N+ ^ When I spoke on the topic,he said, "No bones about it."(也就是他同意我的看法) " m. F0 X4 h' C$ r7 E! d
; L6 s$ }% J& ~! K+ I$ `

/ i0 w, i( M5 f 3. take it on me! 7 E4 c+ P' k X8 h) i9 B0 `
) M: y$ D; s n( C
意思是:“这是我的,请用吧!”“这是免费的”(help yourself to it; it is free),这多半是指吃的东西或一些不贵重的东西。例如: * e; |+ Y0 h" W
, G- ^7 u5 V {8 t* `
Here are some candies from England; take one on me. (one = candy)
* V5 Q- L8 a8 V
' g% {- b0 W1 k p The restaurant owner said to me, "Take the dessert on me." (餐馆老板对我说:“尝尝我的甜点吧!”)
4 L6 F8 v1 f1 r$ f! v" O
7 ?& a0 _1 v: Z% x Please take these pencils on me.(取用一些我的铅笔吧!)
2 S/ o( Z. \ W' A+ b# \( d
6 U5 E# @/ Y- _' D# d4 j- } 可见 take 后面的 it,是指 something,而 on 的后面通常不指别人,所以多半也只用在第一人称单数 me。 4 ]. j1 W1 T0 u( n# l. P& p9 r
4 C2 w$ X5 w% G$ y
(假如夫妇在一起,也可以说:Take it on us.) 5 ~! ]/ i% ~* U3 s; W( Q5 s
g, o; n6 O9 X% `& m; O: t- n 4. I am from Missouri.
7 ?+ k6 J- `. ?3 o. b! N5 ~( P! a* k2 v
5 _& u7 u8 X3 [; n q) \ 这句话有时后面要加一句:“I need to be shown.”或“You have got to show me.”,意思是 Missouri 州的人很固执 (stubborn),不太信任别人,一定要人家证明一下(prove it to me),所以密苏里州也被称为“The Show Me State”。 , \ b5 m5 S; s7 p' [' ]- H
/ {1 c8 x& X$ |$ m2 P0 Y/ F. B) |( {3 a* W
He is not easily convinced because he is from Missouri. 2 D% J- C- E7 G. S
$ P @% c; ^4 H+ j' l
Don''t try to fool me; I am from Missouri.(You have got to show me.)
1 u5 j- t& [' o5 F9 h0 q6 c
, c x4 X& B9 A0 p We are all from Missouri; we need to be shown. + [# J( Y% o+ t+ N9 Z
$ w6 P0 d& E! e; u As Mr. Smith is a tough guy; he must be from Missouri. (Smith先生是位倔强的人,他一定是来自密苏里州。) |
