You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,1 \6 Y; f1 j, l0 _

) d- I3 F/ L6 PI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.4 `2 @; A: T2 T5 U, H
# G/ y: E9 `) e  f! h. N
His name was Kyle.
! @+ j6 y& G$ m0 f4 ~+ E, N: C$ C6 J( g0 W
It looked like he was carrying all of his% b/ \! {' z' _: c2 ]
Books.7 N$ B+ L6 Q& k9 L

: n" a" H5 W+ @1 I2 l  ZI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
% r5 R* T$ }1 `0 g: H, V6 B2 i: ~# |( i
He must really be a nerd."
3 ?9 x( l) Q$ X
5 o9 O  s1 S' j6 M( r0 _( O4 pI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.: a9 A4 l4 l2 h* b! |

( K- _/ K; ~5 U+ V5 O$ ^As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.1 _, |0 n( z+ d: F& D* q3 u

5 e- c  L! t- u8 Z( P' SThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
4 F5 w) f& O0 _% ]4 H2 \3 J$ A1 S4 z( ~& f! b4 r7 X  {
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.+ G) i0 Q3 I! ~8 q/ i- {

, D: j! d+ |. ]/ JHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
$ f: b2 ]+ E+ G5 b* G# A/ t3 y! v
7 S5 C( y2 c2 l' h8 y. PMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
' e$ {2 g+ `  k/ J5 m- I
- C1 w8 d* h# c/ c3 a% lAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
7 v4 I1 X- E$ I) p! ]" d# |3 l1 K! i6 L
They really should get lives.
9 w, M& J) s" Q- O4 V- J  y# s4 K7 s5 e
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"" p2 G/ {7 B. k3 A9 {

1 t# V5 w1 q; k3 N4 u% ]# KThere was a big smile on his face.+ \% Z6 i2 d; R: H$ b9 [3 v
* f: H5 q4 i7 E6 [, H
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
* F/ S8 W6 J& }# a/ n1 }
: `6 F" M) T+ H& I% f0 SI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.3 @( s% x9 i' v/ J
  ~$ o8 K9 f4 t9 d3 V
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.( W) e! J! q5 d6 q. [
. p/ i& I  F0 d5 V9 `  k
He said he had gone to private school before now.
" A0 R& p. C" S4 q( l, G4 u* f  Z& d( o/ q! i
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.7 L4 T+ U; j/ G; B- E) }$ ]! \
' `: M% V# ?% [0 h+ V. q
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
: |, _+ o7 s4 y1 l& S& a
* _! u! F; v: F/ y4 kHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.' s& c9 c5 q3 @' {4 `

% l- l. b. k$ m7 }( r- |I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends./ P5 K5 n) F* k9 N+ A
- P6 S0 f) G7 G; p9 H
He said yes.) i7 E+ i$ p4 Z
1 P3 G: J/ K% F7 r. Z# A3 Y
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
1 x* H6 m+ i4 g4 h6 d) B, w% B6 Q/ K" ~8 t9 ]+ G
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again./ T' K( S* K* Y' O8 f
8 d) g# [: j. a" Z
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
$ y8 d: N* w3 S3 i. A# o1 G& U& f* O! C/ M
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
) f* G/ D  ~& L0 d/ m+ ?- e
0 G7 L8 h  ]" wOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
1 ?' P3 w2 a4 O% Y1 t
9 K  ~% q$ |( P2 I3 F1 p3 @When we were seniors, we began to think
9 N" {# Y7 {6 ~, Y9 O9 ~8 BAbout college.0 ~1 J+ D4 y0 X
) U9 u0 t+ F, u( a' u  Q
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I0 q; K: c" \$ G" A4 i0 C
Was going to Duke.
+ x  i0 T/ ?% T% @+ A
7 M% ^. w% [" D7 tI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
0 h5 S. h8 r& i" C  |6 {  m5 ?# w, t
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
! t/ P3 }  I3 Z0 ]. q# E8 P1 U' _" g. v. x- m
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.
5 r: T1 w, }( T5 ~0 B9 B) H  @0 h1 z" D& L
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.
! \4 p1 O& D$ _* T2 }" l
7 b/ C7 h" P5 dHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.
% F1 b+ k( M* t5 q6 @$ u; d
: x& f# ]6 N4 `9 [! SI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
4 x1 d" K& C$ X
; x: a9 Q4 m' r7 JGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
- m+ t3 X# Z9 A! A' W
  ]( ]( y3 y0 c# C# b) W8 oHe looked great.
; u! G; ?3 \3 i! P; @
* J2 C% f9 U. n+ R4 n5 y: CHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
- z0 }( O% V- x
- A- B8 m6 z5 z* n8 W4 PHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
4 X, a0 i7 ]+ O( h5 N1 G* |; D+ L( a4 Y2 e! A* G
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.: B' V3 K- P  Q8 A/ N8 e

9 \* P  `. r$ b8 B7 SBoy, sometimes I was jealous.+ \( A+ i, t; N" V

; u( I5 I: q0 |: `8 J6 vToday was one of those days.
# T  v! {  P, K. N/ `1 Z$ W; S+ c
/ j, ^5 O. u4 |/ w' ?6 E: q, ?# n& o. RI could see that he was nervous about his speech.8 b# G) T2 L7 c) P
1 p" O. l8 E) b, V! W6 T0 l
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"% h4 ]# Q7 s8 N* f! |* o

8 E* j' O# d5 PHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
' `# o% M9 E. f& W( k0 S1 g+ _( x! `7 K0 M# L9 P1 D
"Thanks," he said.
% J2 k' R5 e* n7 l- w( y+ A# ]% R
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
8 R+ V! c9 B# q5 @- k* j
& V; j* N. B, I/ G( M. I  z- y"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.! m7 X! S5 A9 v6 |0 L

- ]9 }) \8 }' e8 f' N& }( dYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
" o8 G) F( Y9 P$ \* m& w) B# Y
- E4 @5 W7 q& b% B$ o( wI am here to tell all of you that being a
! v* m1 C# q, S0 V& B* S9 tFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.9 h' S- `# A, H) h5 p

7 E9 k7 o! t" ]1 E; \1 s) HI am going to tell you a story."- l3 S5 C* s2 N" P6 F: k8 n* ~" z

8 r! C* B3 f  W5 O- Z2 x: TI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.% m- b# }$ O( v6 W0 g
+ r0 m% o3 g& l) v' {2 M
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.$ `+ b' u; d5 K( J

" T# o$ Y* i! M; N: aHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
; W: V9 L& ]: k7 m1 h4 s% O' N4 e% }4 A: h$ u6 o1 h
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
: }" X7 E8 W) p% A0 D6 n- o
& z1 _  T; d2 h* L' v. t"Thankfully, I was saved.) R1 F# x$ c: O  x1 _- \' E

# y! A& v. [0 L" m" ?5 k5 h* EMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."/ O* j9 t' _9 c% \7 ~* \! D- t
; t( l' o8 e1 P
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.' E" |/ b% o1 g( z4 Y9 a

. G% J1 ]# `# Z; c% K: {I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.( p0 \. K+ }8 V7 r8 \+ }9 p! L

) x  \" q6 f$ N7 @, M4 kNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.
. x4 k6 V# w8 k8 D
' Q* i* n. `. CNever underestimate the power of your actions.
% `$ ]% Z. ?. s* y% m7 E% C. K
- E0 a8 v% U+ G+ h/ AWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.+ r+ }% g; h; k( m1 n
2 s  n3 T* U% ^" R# x; l7 q
For better or for worse.& @3 Z; ~- x0 T1 \% h4 m
2 v7 e" j: x+ A6 T" E* Z* m
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
, K6 K7 F4 e5 W) Y; f9 j
% `$ w' R. D/ v; c/ sLook for God in others.1 N( K! B/ F2 b4 g

( I# \9 [' k4 D, d: D+ _$ S* R, Q2 |; KYou now have two choices, you can:% B/ Z/ U" G, m4 H: p6 S

' z) E# s+ u" `1) Pass this on to your friends or
* }1 W' N/ ~3 r5 _1 L) ]2 G7 E5 ]; a0 ~/ h
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
; B. f2 j/ B1 _( v7 T1 s" P' V+ a2 ~5 j; Q# }; U( G$ P, M8 X5 ~
As you can see, I took choice number 1.( b1 Y) {, `3 w, [
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
& L- x& f6 y2 d2 C! X" T9 I' i8 `
& ]4 U1 Y1 q4 B5 n, LThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history./ f7 g1 c$ V1 G* m/ z) W, C; }' K

1 L& ~/ V7 ^8 {. r" }, ^7 cTomorrow is mystery.
: m, Y4 ~1 r6 C7 w: ~; w& k5 W( _( [3 i7 j5 E; ?
Today is a gift.
