You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
+ s6 r: N; M% p" \- @: Y6 m) ^
- B; \; f' }9 W0 UI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
0 N4 j0 x9 Z* h4 D$ G: O, `4 L" H. y* Z* U* O5 }( ^
His name was Kyle.
. V+ d4 Z" w9 g- T. p( S" q: a6 Y& @# l0 O
It looked like he was carrying all of his1 \& j* ]: q( ?- j
Books.
( {& _2 u. s/ G; c
& m( @* @# v: GI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
# E5 p5 k3 H) e; c4 Y+ O$ a5 y( A7 V9 B! D
He must really be a nerd."
2 c7 |$ y' z' p/ J2 [3 s2 R$ T
. `  ?/ s6 x) y) R! h. W% Q/ MI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.- n9 ]3 G$ b5 D9 j+ I) C
" W* L  R7 c( _) b! w1 d  N
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
( k* c2 f; z/ `" M) F4 C
; ~8 M5 j5 V6 u( E& dThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
2 I: e& u0 `. d7 @. b* d. W2 R2 w- E, U2 U
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
! j0 o( r, ]/ q2 i; H9 p1 q2 n) s$ w
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
1 j$ N" W" \5 Y3 M  s, b3 {( {8 J# R: d7 W. ^1 u1 [
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.* w+ n' S5 V1 p7 Y# w

' R% ^9 g" D6 MAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
+ `4 |) r5 B) w' `$ X0 f; s3 G# h5 Z) J9 O- ~3 L+ V, {$ H
They really should get lives.3 N+ S# z* W% k! k" T# v& T

# {# n" d) n2 U" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"( J5 b* Z  G$ t; a

4 F8 w& E; H" N  mThere was a big smile on his face.
, d: N  q3 a# w$ H
0 _% s0 [4 a0 s0 ?. j& CIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
7 p4 |: j* D, @$ k9 X9 }: g' b  K+ W+ B
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
- r/ o$ n6 d6 x; ?  B: T* p$ H$ M: C4 E2 u/ t  Z0 R
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
% q# g( y/ `5 Y6 `1 t; G
# r4 H% e( R  wHe said he had gone to private school before now." C3 D8 a" q( Q" o. ]% ]
: I1 v) r: q9 k/ I3 |0 [) s- P  c
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.$ R5 S2 Y0 W# h! \

+ ?9 N# @- `: [: N2 Q3 V  b. B2 BWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
# R5 S# x! z+ l8 }: U1 F7 @4 \+ A  m/ K% D( I3 m
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid." C) B4 t( w$ g$ ]# c
( M1 \. o: W7 r  O% |1 \0 x7 a
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.# |+ t+ m8 g+ ]' B. _, \  c: |

' m  p# w" o: V6 bHe said yes.% x4 ]3 v3 K  @% ?3 q2 V
" A$ H8 R) s/ r! P9 L  z2 C, I; I# v
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.4 x4 C) v6 @$ l% T
/ ]1 L8 a( C5 E7 }4 S, x& G! N# P
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
: H2 p1 |% f$ P0 J9 D& ]% A& b! s( Z; P; q* E
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
, }' q( ?7 G" t2 T  u. @6 n- S& F( W* e% s+ J0 B: ]# @6 @+ S
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
4 R) q* R! D& d* c% M; o% X2 @7 y8 M6 S2 P, P3 c" G4 M
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
$ Q  L) e+ b% y$ e0 y" d, p1 c1 J$ S
When we were seniors, we began to think4 I/ y( f- u8 e) @. x* }
About college.9 q( g5 v) j; U( z8 X. o$ d3 `

: Y8 O1 C1 q' nKyle decided on Georgetown, and I
+ y: @/ ]  f& C! [Was going to Duke.4 {4 A4 U5 i* V4 H8 w% l
' [; N' y) M2 K1 B
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
4 z+ ?! t+ Y2 p
, W' G# f$ }5 N) r# x- [0 XHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.2 @' G$ n  R0 f7 E5 \
9 F  k+ }9 L- M
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.
# E; n9 l, ^4 D* x8 ^: b, V
( l+ Q& N0 e0 U  {) w: N7 T! }I teased him all the time about being a nerd./ Y0 o6 o2 ~; _1 X- t

/ X$ e' ?2 Y& {8 F! b. ZHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.5 r7 e# V. O7 Z! f+ s7 V
1 n/ m2 b$ P1 ]* N% |0 J! l: H1 X
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak  ^+ D) l) c" d: y
3 I$ Z2 E$ ~! T
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.# R3 `& f3 l6 c  Y, U% w
9 g5 U  Y8 ~3 G
He looked great.
$ n2 ^/ X0 A1 k3 e$ j2 c0 t# H7 U
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.6 \9 N' X7 V* }4 K

6 M; M% G* z- ]( [; S$ V: v! l& WHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
9 U  X0 A  |" A) Y3 R" Y" R6 T* Z% I. \8 I: C
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.$ N3 i. `8 k7 _) y4 p

" u) i% I: ~3 gBoy, sometimes I was jealous.
) z# ]# y, C" r5 @7 L; f+ n: h1 `! }
Today was one of those days.
- b7 r" _* f1 u& B. W. y/ M- H( X. d4 H: e) [9 c- {- I
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.' X  g7 K. D; o
( }  [# Z2 Y* G) {+ |5 X
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"# o. g# Y4 J+ S. [0 U8 C- D6 t
; ~' s  b0 j3 `
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
& f. P& B1 w4 f6 b! E
2 E* m8 S. t% V# Y& j! ?"Thanks," he said." Z4 D7 I, w3 g% B, z9 |
9 R$ n0 e$ z5 {5 R6 c
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began  U& w6 c2 S9 @; \6 }4 s1 N
7 ]8 Z& V% N5 c' q. y
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
/ g: A/ k/ n4 r1 N) Q
4 Y. V: ^6 P' H/ R5 [6 @) q  U1 L$ EYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...$ [7 ?# M( b( H  i0 \9 A
& y( T( f/ c  S( X
I am here to tell all of you that being a
( K& ?/ }4 v# C1 [( kFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.: y( k0 _8 d2 ?3 {+ J
" n2 }6 E1 Q3 z
I am going to tell you a story."* f/ \. `/ N+ m2 }; V, C2 z
- c1 `, o3 O% f/ X& N" @9 C
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.% D6 Q1 H7 U  z

0 H+ I/ z" U" [He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
: c/ m5 R4 x% `+ a9 x
' u; B2 \- H9 bHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
) L* b& d) f6 f* u6 ?) j
' j* v$ U7 c/ e6 ]$ ZHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
& {" H. j8 }' ^
; L! p: j2 G# h; o7 f. ~$ Z"Thankfully, I was saved.- x" P0 j# y0 `. e8 U, p' l
; \# U& K' }6 n" O5 {1 j
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
+ v, l1 r  Z: d& d4 G( n) u2 Y
1 h- Q+ L& P1 T5 K1 @: C% h, [I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
* H6 z( J0 O# [3 p
3 W' s. L- ~' g' U% y/ e- nI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.9 K+ {& R. C/ ]  j- z  E6 ~

- K1 C$ Q4 p* J  e* x' d9 FNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.
5 r9 x% y% d9 y2 s
% q5 A  s! t" [( f2 nNever underestimate the power of your actions.
) P3 h0 S8 q; b4 y  H) w- ]& y/ |, i9 a5 B' U6 `  b) R
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.
6 n% G1 V! x* C5 O  ~+ Q- x) U' E( E/ {9 u3 w1 l/ W$ x
For better or for worse.0 }  s! E6 V$ n
8 j( h; X4 f! H$ t. m
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.6 a3 W. h# C) s; r' R: F
2 Y; y* G  G! [  q/ ?) {+ c
Look for God in others.
' o) o7 A& n! M/ ]! ~
3 l! Z3 d& [" Y$ B: m" WYou now have two choices, you can:2 I6 J- V. m+ c1 T8 u

1 ?5 l$ h0 H' x1) Pass this on to your friends or6 H: P1 }: }, b- {+ u: E
% E! e5 p, m( H9 Z! Q2 s
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.; t/ v& z! u8 o; t, U8 I

/ V! Y/ \' T) U! e/ z6 `As you can see, I took choice number 1.4 Z2 v- D2 @; ]& E, ]# A" w  v, M
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
- K# ~4 s- U# @# Z; z" c6 k  F: p& \6 ?
There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.7 }* K2 r2 k! a5 J) _% H
0 G- M  m& P, j$ F7 L
Tomorrow is mystery.! }9 K$ o0 |" L+ H
0 c! |2 D2 k4 O0 e" r+ x
Today is a gift.8 Y/ u  r5 K; R8 o0 C2 I1 H
/ [0 H% v7 U) [. F" ?+ W% h8 P) x  g
