You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,2 R6 b6 y! g5 n6 K0 A2 p3 \% p; n

! |. }$ U9 t# _& T7 u# ~I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.* s7 r" Z: G2 P7 O6 H2 r
0 s6 G5 M% {, u! B$ Z: M' Z
His name was Kyle.' Z3 q2 t( s6 g! U% F: S
. T# S9 J; q" f8 G
It looked like he was carrying all of his, i+ K) T1 U' ]+ E4 e( k% d* l
Books.! e% J! X; x$ x- N! Y6 J2 v2 c- N2 q
: h9 j5 U- t* H- F% \
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?( V3 v( Q+ H! Z, B- C
) \) y- Z$ M5 g+ j: R" W$ o: G
He must really be a nerd."5 E$ _8 ~% m5 K

& k3 Z8 `* {9 F# f7 u0 TI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.3 P" @/ f% s; q
, J; X% I# W3 {; h7 _% _
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
3 ~; s3 B# x6 z" q; _+ t
: }0 T) B( G8 I* ~1 ~1 D6 |They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.$ ~  ?' T) z) Z! W8 j" `$ C
- T4 c+ R+ H8 b* [" n/ }2 N
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
/ u6 R* U4 i& {8 U2 M- B- ~  I  N0 N0 f# `% J
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
5 E% m" }% n4 b5 a4 w4 K9 {; c, H
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.5 `- j1 ?0 P+ H% i$ M# y; _- D

3 t0 e% e* F" P! vAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.; A! \7 {' H6 p% ~
& D" O! \1 b$ Q2 M8 W2 F
They really should get lives.+ ^* l; L1 G& K2 S( R& M5 G
6 ?/ I! F( W# D/ I) U
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"2 [3 r1 g$ Y, G  Q! y; S# o
: b# C" n% p, p: s  ~
There was a big smile on his face.5 y  M0 e1 _0 Q

% v- i8 o/ u# K/ Y* y& EIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
: ^9 W' E6 U5 ?
2 B" [9 o0 H, [+ ZI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.

: T( S. }7 c: M7 g3 yAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.& M- _# {' d: t* X. ^& C  _

) C- M% E" s* q+ w$ T2 T* t7 g4 j" eHe said he had gone to private school before now.7 q, }% ]+ K( r8 q8 R# q- }* b. j4 Y) Q
1 }, A8 N3 J! Q% p, a+ I
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
( h( w( y# M. o: \: z' ?6 p
  T' M4 e' a  z/ oWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.! R5 o* K/ K7 g  k

- Q* n1 u, p5 y7 ]He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.9 \% H" M: ^4 b: _, n$ q
3 X. x( a+ Y' m9 A( a
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
& Y8 B* i4 p( z, N% h
! k4 B+ G: C& @$ r% P1 D0 iHe said yes.
: ]; A9 A. ^+ g. H7 Y; e* h% u4 z0 q& y' Y
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.3 I" I, N' q9 d8 V
7 q2 z9 q+ ~+ k2 i/ S
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.5 m1 N' H3 k+ [' A) c3 Q  C, K  `

  H% I( u& L1 @4 \+ T+ x% KI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!8 g" x- x+ |- J8 S; N9 G! M6 W
, Z% O0 u! q& V0 t
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
; S4 |8 C( l6 Z, H5 o6 g, o( |: h1 X. b) P5 l6 x% Z* O" r  G+ G! W* w
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.4 z9 W! F$ C7 B9 e7 Q. g% a5 u

0 O1 K6 F) f- W& m8 [When we were seniors, we began to think
" {( `. L. W8 I& uAbout college.
& s. c+ @6 @5 I
; O1 z0 _8 [* ^* J9 \Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I
" p3 d6 N& Y+ k5 i4 g* ]Was going to Duke.3 g0 X+ {* M9 W2 E

/ r# s* }& ]& T, R- w( O# A- xI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem." b1 ]' J) w( q
2 S, L. R& q2 e1 {
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
  W/ B7 W8 f( r. H9 }( t
9 q9 K3 e& n+ `" s" N- tKyle was valedictorian of our class.
3 ~( d% o1 f& L6 c) _
7 R+ y& e8 J& y% j! P1 b% c" tI teased him all the time about being a nerd.7 O& U7 U7 b0 \  Z
3 e  @. N! n7 F1 X
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.! i+ k5 k8 s' O8 D& Q! Y

$ l% W# Y* v, [3 j$ A, KI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
' e3 d: \, ]7 g
% q  Z% S/ j) W4 R! K: \Graduation day, I saw Kyle.- @& E4 u2 Z( Z* R
' K* K; T1 t1 J1 M9 U: r9 v3 v" `
He looked great.
+ g' I, W( p! Q4 y# B! m9 T& v, N6 ~! H
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
1 h1 U+ ^# ^6 N) k# {$ w. h0 T2 n! Y! V! X0 N$ b, p
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.2 I* F2 p3 t; ~4 j
* j  t) H! u2 C0 e% ^# x
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.7 |8 u- O  C% Q8 t2 H1 ^7 a4 E

; l! ]9 W( n1 r& v( x; ~Boy, sometimes I was jealous.  A) |4 _" E1 y0 |: T) S

- L8 b; e; w: S+ a6 F" b2 xToday was one of those days.
( ]" _7 o0 R8 q& c: [7 c2 ^, V7 c! [; h2 h
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.
; G' W1 ~# K0 Q' V, m1 [  g( e$ P5 K
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
2 r: [; n& f; j' f8 D; Z7 u/ t
$ @3 h& t7 V& N2 A2 c/ c, j: W$ vHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.+ o# x+ C  C, n. F% n
4 Y) y% V0 k4 W. i& d# h. r  }
"Thanks," he said.
0 l" C' @/ l, y) {4 t& ^, k- N1 A7 w7 E- w$ v; e. g  |- ]
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
' n  o& c- \# L5 ], T9 i1 ~" z, f7 L
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.3 u0 h& p  x3 t1 ~% w# E

6 _/ i& N" i& E: _2 ]8 a4 KYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...% y! o8 l8 x) F
! \9 D; }. b- t/ @/ X4 ?+ Q6 x
I am here to tell all of you that being a- p7 w" E, E# [) k2 k
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
4 }; h- {/ p# ^- p* {! ]! }$ A$ `5 F; V4 h. w3 x+ O& L
I am going to tell you a story."
4 C# E, @- p0 z9 L1 E* [& B; ~! ]% N
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.; d2 q, V: z8 U: \8 z7 i" C

! k; f4 f" J3 SHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.0 [, B" `5 {8 Y1 s
" N+ U% _# |: N; w' X! Z& j% O7 O
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home./ `% O; ~2 b, X: o8 n* f

4 d( b2 A! ~8 u+ HHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
2 R8 A1 r$ X$ S9 f3 |" P8 ?. A- K
"Thankfully, I was saved.
/ e, {) @. _- F1 U- @
/ g$ O& a8 Y  [0 }( pMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."' W. r. _: \2 \2 ~  L: @/ l
* L* H2 T! f0 e) g1 _# ~
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
( I/ I; j# z( X2 G1 Y/ ^5 [2 ?; B% \% K1 F
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
, n. L7 e' X  o8 S7 P5 t6 V' Q  j- ]- w6 G$ `+ V
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.3 L# n# ^* w- Z% c: y5 M
; g  J! X& X0 k% S# D0 g  E
Never underestimate the power of your actions.
2 Y9 g( l0 G# i; F( m. H" E
3 d7 c/ n$ U4 D* y; ]With one small gesture you can change a person's life.4 ~' X7 l( e" Q9 g; m
8 N7 c. z5 o9 N
For better or for worse.8 a; t+ y2 }5 Z, V' U' y' l

1 G0 b" u1 }" b: [  d# G* DGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
, `, ?7 W/ Z) S1 u9 F
7 E* V) L1 U) C% d- ALook for God in others.
- j, v+ q1 n% K3 {/ `5 {
$ S5 j! j, h5 T& D$ IYou now have two choices, you can:

1) Pass this on to your friends or
9 h% [, I4 I. z/ l
# n* }; [6 H) a+ T3 x2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.

4 y! |/ X) ~' y* TAs you can see, I took choice number 1.0 _, X' T8 H) D
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.". g/ l2 s/ D% L4 z+ D

1 @9 Y6 P. [# A9 s8 l6 }% J4 }( s  @There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.
5 @( I: V/ e# c' W" m2 X! ?5 F* h7 _% G! I
Tomorrow is mystery.

$ Q% p* T8 S# `) }Today is a gift.
