if you want a very high clarity and colour, then $10K CAD may only get you a 0.5 ct diamond if you don't care as much about colour and clarity, then you can easily get a 1.0 ct or bigger ring. typically, girls care more about the clarity and size.

the cutting of the diamond is also very important. a well cut 0.5 ct diamond may look as big or maybe even bigger on surface than a 1.0 ct diamond if it wasn't cut properly.

) k8 F0 `4 O9 X* u& nthe solitary princess diamond is the most popular style for an engagement ring. solitaty means a single large diamond (not a whole bunch of small diamonds or dusts but with the total weight added to a 1.0 ct) and princess means it's cut into a round shape on top (not square or oval shape)
