second important function is accessbility. soft tonneau will allow abit of over size load, and easily warp up, so you can use your truck bed as much as possible when you need, and it wont take you too much speace to store. also cheaper( usually). hard tonneau will provide some anti-theft ability, in case you always carry some valueable items in your truck box. they are not that easy to fold away or move away, also abit more expensive.
