for Internet services. It is essential that I hear the views of Canadians
; f+ R [+ J) Ion the issues that matter. Prime Minister Harper and I have been clear
/ ^1 o3 I& L) O0 j8 k& w5 wthat we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet! P2 i: g% _& a& J6 t) X
service providers.9 u8 F( Y+ u( k. D8 L- C' j) y4 v

Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are5 e D9 {+ X0 r2 P3 x% k
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving& n5 t4 K' o4 y
innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops9 d* ]5 c6 h4 l1 g
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look! i, F4 V1 p+ L, A9 j8 ^' Y
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be
% Y3 N3 O4 x, ? W% Iguided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and) i" I9 n9 G, S8 d5 i+ K% L8 {
investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing) u" K R5 G6 k, R/ O6 l- z
market forces to prevail.
' @; k( w" h/ t3 S# Q9 M: k8 I& Q( p% Y/ c& z5 C+ c4 N8 U
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has+ U, w: G' h Y) z
chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large

government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in
8 v' A w! z5 ?" Lline with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
8 l% O( q: N! N$ a: ^competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that! B8 [+ `' ]! `6 Z% N, G
any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.
