that we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet
! C3 A# T6 Q; t3 w5 a9 Mservice providers.

Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are, v+ q3 P1 A+ s) b) O# {
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
+ E4 w" H# B) l) y( Q* t' q, ^1 Rinnovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops
& J% [% y9 O9 i' BCanada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look
9 g, `, t2 r' u6 g7 N; Icarefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be7 @/ T( b( r* V' R; ]5 M2 W8 }
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
1 c% ?/ u) s( I |# Z1 I Ainvestment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing
* o& F$ O i: m. _- _& Smarket forces to prevail. 3 R& U ?1 p1 B) A6 A
; L8 @& {$ F+ e. y# K& L0 T7 jThe Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has k, g- w6 X- F5 T: V) Y# b
chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large6 u9 F! P( [/ U& R: u H
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the) s- s* b% r! x0 ]0 l7 H
government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in
; v7 D' {* W+ Q, o. v2 ], oline with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages. { Q1 C5 l! _: t
competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
# t6 W8 D, i- @* D: P0 O! jany decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.
