( k) o" y u! eon the issues that matter. Prime Minister Harper and I have been clear$ n9 K# C2 E9 U; q3 @& y
that we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet

Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are
& K' L6 _. o! k/ ~# ?+ K* ran increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
) v# Z1 A |7 ^* A" b5 minnovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops$ J$ i) T2 V, i5 y' U9 K
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look
$ _1 n) _% L# w* Bcarefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be
$ |- f, P% K k! o1 ?1 M5 R7 Dguided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and9 ]% S. X2 Y* `3 ]/ ~$ g) N
investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing/ m+ Z6 `) E; u2 D
market forces to prevail. 1 w# o. i$ C) g e
* L6 \ b/ g7 Z7 M
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
5 v2 \% e" g+ h; @- M/ k' ~chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large; t! l$ W5 B `; H1 A5 x9 |9 T
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the6 r, C) C4 L2 j9 r# b; b
government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in
4 r$ Q5 n5 Q$ `' ]4 W4 nline with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
4 k6 K: V0 i/ }0 Vcompetition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
' t: @9 p! o' w1 I9 M3 Oany decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.- Y, s3 m* z' E4 R& }; ?
