Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are% C! F( w4 R# v. @) H) Z: |
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving7 h8 F9 m9 Q- Q/ x# C2 U" B( S1 T
innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops
7 @! H6 R% b X" x* F2 ~7 b0 `Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look- A/ }, K+ ~- U6 G g
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be T+ z5 u+ C( N" z# L
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
( G' Z. V7 O( H2 j6 x8 N. minvestment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has; ]& S8 c& x0 {7 Y/ w, m/ O; C
chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large3 I3 I2 W0 G" H: n

) v2 y. [2 k/ t" J- b, FWhen the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the, u$ l6 g/ B0 J" _9 ]! W
government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in
$ n# C- [ H; C, ^* l# {3 ?line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages4 Q/ S# T: v$ ~- q9 q; u
competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that* ?- K( M4 M) M3 u
any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.
