& w. V5 I: m. s9 ?2 z• Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers (EMCN), Q4 L* s: P8 U5 w
• Alberta Society of Engineering Technologists (ASET), and
4 O2 x4 ^8 Y+ I3 C% P( P; \7 s: |• Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT).
1 H! n4 M7 u. I* t8 OBeginning in 1995, ETIP:
8 u) r0 V$ B/ o" ~. F5 K• supports foreign-educated engineer and engineering technologists, and! T, @, c3 p: j- T; h7 Z& V
• helps participants develop the skills and recognition needed to work as

The Alberta economy has a high demand for skilled workers in the

# l. C' _. P7 M1 AAlberta is home to many foreign-educated immigrant engineers. These
" T$ e- R+ t5 l6 x# P: _" _immigrants are highly educated and experienced, yet many may find it: R8 O# C+ j. g
difficult to integrate into the Alberta workforce. Some employers may not% D3 X3 I7 [% O( k/ M0 F
recognize their international experience or credentials.

0 z3 S% C& e* IIntegrated training offers a blend of occupation-related skills, a work4 A% U$ N: G2 s: f: [0 f( M
experience and competency-based training, such as applied academics or
+ {! V" N, n% o1 v; d KEnglish as a Second Language.
+ G2 g! k, }& FThe ETIP program involves four phases:

􀂉 prior learning assessment and evaluation

The training components of ETIP assist participants in developing skills
; f! p% H4 O, G7 M6 lrequired for the Alberta workplace. Training includes:

# I% u. n. f4 ]2 }7 V6 D1 Z1 Z• engineering-related training delivered at NAIT:
8 \& O' U) }. o. V& T) K% ]􀂉 450 hours of in-class time
) F5 z0 O) _, A• job search and job management skills
: v6 ?' c7 H# X• first-aid training, and9 F* r% H1 p+ P4 p
• computer training.
3 x3 H4 r: `6 u4 E; U3 Y3 kUpon successful completion of ETIP, graduates are Technologist-in-Training( n' z/ T' X3 u
members of ASET:4 G# o Q$ F, L3 k8 m+ C
• ASET is a professional association that provides credential assessment4 p+ N( z1 e! H# w2 G3 _
and recognition of professional qualifications in the engineering& N/ O* }: c$ J9 K9 X

Each member of the ETIP partnership contributes their expertise in order to

Edmonton immigrant community.

• ASET provides professional recognition of the qualifications of ETIP; |) F, g8 E& H8 r3 p
graduates.
) p2 a0 s- ~! z R! ~ BWhat is the evidence of success?) D" Q Q+ r$ s! ~2 Z
As of 2003, more than 80% of ETIP graduates over the past six years have
0 W+ W" T# V# g tfound engineering or engineering technologist employment in Alberta.
$ `) q3 d" h+ f9 r8 H$ b/ tIn 2004, 46 engineers graduated from the ETIP program. At the time of% h$ ~: V. L$ l4 H+ a2 u, u, `
graduation, almost half had secured employment in the engineering industry,, j \: N) ?0 K! Z
with over 90% employed at three months post-graduation.
