 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

$ z* _; [; [+ c" Y The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
. f) C# O( g2 O( V3 ito their first ministry, to reopen a church 7 h# Z6 D; @/ U; h) N4 v
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 4 U/ |4 G9 `0 w1 @
excited about their opportunities. When they saw ( [( o3 y+ L2 e7 \6 S J( C
their church, it was very run down and needed * l& w: N8 o; I0 Y1 O& ~
much work. They set a goal to have everything ' Z6 v9 T8 l( L L$ x4 r
done in time to have their first service
3 {1 |: |4 x# h) q3 pon Christmas Eve.
8 M/ ^& z4 a$ ~& y9 P1 A1 lT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,0 X: b: e3 l0 w; c" W
painting, etc, and on December 18 . _- [+ {- e; _! K
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
! h- Q: w; _$ Q* d E8 i' UO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving 5 z+ g) S) N, U1 y
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
9 q% g1 {4 A( N' q- m, F O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.5 D8 W: t; Y) s! A+ ]& Z; D# J1 u
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
$ E; f4 k6 P4 z# rleaked, causing a large area of plaster about 0 f' M, x# T7 k+ k" r
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
$ y1 d g$ B+ i: Yof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
1 k) S4 k/ r4 `0 Obeginning about head high. ; Y$ i% ^8 a% p3 `
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
, U0 }* a8 x2 n9 @% |. dand not knowing what else to do but postpone ( D! q( t) b! Y9 d" d
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
7 K& T V2 ]4 |On the way he noticed that a local business was
$ q0 h) n; \) v8 jhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
p# H5 T2 Z& j6 e. {4 ^stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
8 [ V3 C# ~' L) yhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth - i5 Y S4 {; k' l
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 3 S+ V) K2 G( [& J/ `. u
embroidered right in the center. It was just $ Q( A5 M7 ^/ H9 N" X T- m. _( {
% |* f, }/ ^" v& o6 j! C& \
4 V% d8 k' j1 e, m $ x. [- E, m8 R, d
5 w( H5 F& i# E& g
7 X" H% V. o2 i% D- `2 I1 R$ c0 {0 {) b+ J6 ^8 ^+ x
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
& z! T) V" Y, QB y this time it had started to snow. An older
4 W& p! g5 L+ ewoman running from the opposite direction was
- K0 o( |! t* f: ^/ d% ltrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
% k% f" u3 p p5 }/ z! D* [invited her to wait in the warm church for : f) _% y6 G+ T0 x. ^
the next bus 45 minutes later. 2 B! N8 X$ V R8 ?8 r# R( Q
- j1 T2 O i8 v0 i! VShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor + G5 |3 b$ | Q# f5 d
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put ! n% k7 {- _' H' c& O w
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
; {0 {* @% n9 p) Jcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
, f# S* \8 z% lT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
I+ ?# {7 W3 N: U6 raisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
" |5 y9 f6 r4 p0 Z* u) s# O) ^3 kshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" ; Q+ w9 l1 h/ ?, r
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
8 |* A1 ]; T8 o5 l' v$ Qthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into% @% Y3 P! I* y7 K3 |5 f. g
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 1 {0 v* P3 ], q/ ]- T! i
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
5 f# s2 L) m% v' A# wT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
' [6 v r: z! H6 e& M# A/ {( e/ v! Htold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 3 c( h" e5 T) Y) N8 H. ]! v) W
woman explained that before the war she and ; C( b1 V; F6 x! a( d, U7 Z
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . # k; _: N* y/ P( ^5 k a
0 s8 E* b' n: b
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 9 W8 e6 G- T5 ?
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. 8 x& R# e* d% _5 Z
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
& k6 P. k0 b" Q. N6 V- p) U- _husband or her home again. " ~9 U& [( I) B" s
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;9 @6 B4 K4 |6 y- s4 Z# Y1 N; k( E
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.2 j. q$ ?$ w+ {2 C, ]
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That7 i/ N8 x+ Y6 E6 l# v
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
, P5 N+ N# X% ^2 V* V1 K: U, \side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
% D6 n( U# D7 `0 A# k1 Jfor the day for a housecleaning job.
e' s3 E5 N0 H6 X- D+ v+ SW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
( m( r; Z* y) A7 wEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
0 R3 ]6 B0 B) Z# I2 ]spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
6 f9 Q: H2 e+ X) I4 w5 spastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
/ G* V% x4 d( p/ Q( @and many said that they would return..
4 D* w) }0 Z$ d1 dOne older man, whom the pastor recognized
, g( e4 p& j6 Bfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the ) F5 f: E7 q& d* G# {& y
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
) j# _$ N8 J) t* b3 s8 a+ Y$ [wasn't leaving. 0 L$ A; g/ I9 i/ E& Q) x1 f" {; X
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 0 W* ?" [# v$ Q; L' J
the front wall because it was identical to one
3 O8 T: X; k. h: t3 a; X/ W* lthat his wife had made years ago when
1 t: z) ?$ X. N" Fthey lived in Austria before the war and how
% l$ ^$ V4 |1 R" M+ N0 qcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? / ^; r4 C6 C6 m5 R+ S3 P
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he / ?3 Z: y; C. \9 z$ ?
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
3 @* H8 M5 j1 }; \3 wsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and' [( @1 _3 G- p& ^1 u. }/ Z: `
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home+ ~ s3 _$ Y$ \
again all the 35 years between. ) R7 D. h: x7 o. A2 G9 L) |) K
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 3 {# ^- p" t8 Y& T2 U2 R( H
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
" I# g5 z8 I6 b( A* m8 rIsland and to the same house where the pastor
* t- [* a+ Q7 q( d( p$ Z8 u# O# Ahad taken the woman three days earlier.
6 u1 y" k$ I, @$ M3 BHe helped the man climb the three flights of, A3 e( p& a5 D. v' \/ l- M
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on, i( _2 J9 l' a0 O" ]) v
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas

difficult at best, just remember I'm here 7 ?: y1 F- v! e7 A% f* r1 H \) E' @
