 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned & B, K. A4 B* i* `
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
7 L( c! i6 V" N/ O& V3 Y0 xin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
9 c0 }3 U4 f. ^) h! v- N9 \excited about their opportunities. When they saw
1 U5 g8 i% x5 a7 T0 n/ n- r" wtheir church, it was very run down and needed
9 k; V* W) D- e5 ~3 c7 x0 e4 b" K imuch work. They set a goal to have everything 3 y, F3 |9 M2 O M
done in time to have their first service
- z$ z* Q6 Z: W9 o e( ~: Fon Christmas Eve. 3 Y0 @+ s; E; @8 e* ]
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
7 X/ q' ?' r' N# _8 u8 J- Q3 Zpainting, etc, and on December 18 ) K6 R) i0 c1 g" G
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. T4 L+ ~+ l. ^1 d: B. D
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving ' c* W! J' W: v2 J" Y# P. I
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 8 N1 i! c* e6 L- D. X$ m/ Z5 ^
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.' S* i+ m, @( c6 L' r+ |, u
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had* b" M* _! _& C& E! p4 S
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 3 m' E! h3 [: P2 N( Y& o1 F
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
6 y9 L* l1 {6 lof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
6 B1 r$ _6 t" X& cbeginning about head high.
! g k6 _. C4 T4 p" V# k8 d- ZT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 5 y D e2 _* {" L. s- E
and not knowing what else to do but postpone ) l' i) Y8 v5 b: N
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
) v! n: O" d% D* X1 DOn the way he noticed that a local business was ( H2 `) J$ a& p
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he 1 A2 y6 p4 k* b w$ w+ t C" E
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
5 N9 ] N& m1 K. }0 h* c: Z' Ahandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth + T3 _, h! Z: t4 N7 c$ y" r3 ]
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross / }" t1 G: @# _' ~7 z- {
embroidered right in the center. It was just + t c( z* N& w
& r2 s9 [/ `" `1 G. N% K
; `) g1 m+ i- a) [8 `9 C$ U% m
6 p& q2 a1 M' B# ]3 x S4 [0 F: ~6 I; t* ]7 F' I4 L v: T( o/ ]

the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. W/ N- r- R3 T& @8 d8 Z
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
' o7 n9 z& K7 ^+ q vwoman running from the opposite direction was 6 a& y7 i6 v. ?% X
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 4 F- @4 @9 U; V' F9 g x8 s0 e
invited her to wait in the warm church for
& m1 d+ m( H: k, zthe next bus 45 minutes later.
; q- b- n! _# T& k
( M; I7 ?3 N' P1 ~7 @She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor * o$ H& S: Y4 n7 X
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 1 _* O+ \( n' ?. z$ e: H- Z
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
. }; y& T9 y- [. F6 Ucould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
( R ~; S9 k! d n* S" F% L3 rT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center, U N/ } B! [% R
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"2 ?7 l% n! ]# F$ @# l# D
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
$ C0 @" }& @) g3 O: T- LThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
) R3 T" p" h" x2 q2 B5 ithe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
1 {* o5 A% x! t& f5 l" Git there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
1 C! M A" w/ ?4 X9 D' x1 g' rmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
$ |3 ` ]$ H% t5 v+ E/ [T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
) `# P# x$ c$ I/ _6 I6 H" T Rtold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 7 A. E! u! \$ v' c
woman explained that before the war she and
% E% [% E6 G- A5 |' c0 W; c* Sher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . , W: q. m* t! @& q; w' f" m
' O' O. W+ v# l7 T% s
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
2 ~' u! P7 w+ j% RHer husband was going to follow her the next week. 5 Z% ^* b$ f/ T
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
) I5 c* T/ {' s) G( B7 ?8 Dhusband or her home again.
3 o# r, p5 [1 Q" _2 M6 ~& n1 F/ O. ZT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
6 x7 F% G6 j2 m9 q% C1 Pbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
% B& s- p4 @5 u% a" eThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
( L! n- s* t6 Y$ d* nwas the least he could do. She lived on the other6 o' p. b. M9 J' \
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn - J/ c" M& }1 c- r5 n; {
for the day for a housecleaning job. T: L7 B) ^7 U( Z+ A) E$ s
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
* O! E. t# W/ h" z+ g* cEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
{! A: y' u, Q8 k! K' u) tspirit were great. At the end of the service, the 6 P3 z" d4 B! O# w" _
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 9 _ d: B0 h/ f1 ?* ]
and many said that they would return.. 3 Z& [% r6 W; b3 e
One older man, whom the pastor recognized ' D- E! Z; x2 j
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
5 O: [! h5 N5 Q, W9 m9 A. Kpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he # I( Q( D W- c4 E. b: T
wasn't leaving. $ v2 f( I8 k. y* N b4 _" f1 ^( |
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
& G* w' k1 [# {6 Xthe front wall because it was identical to one # ]- `5 N/ z/ D5 g1 Z
that his wife had made years ago when / l& z1 U3 k# w5 d* }' d
they lived in Austria before the war and how
& o/ J, \$ V: r' Y$ X2 Q2 d$ ccould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
4 C- {& O4 Y! TH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
% z/ k( n0 h* v9 Oforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 1 d) z% Z7 n! v& p' P4 h( w2 F5 r( A
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and! z& ]9 L$ s8 g" I
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
: m$ N2 s( e3 K6 K: L6 n, Cagain all the 35 years between.
$ ?+ i, i+ H9 P% H$ LT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to & A- D0 J% C& g
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
( A3 M$ C. @% R4 R- m6 `: hIsland and to the same house where the pastor
3 t+ O8 u* D \had taken the woman three days earlier. ( s+ W4 _$ G$ }' M8 z, c
He helped the man climb the three flights of, \. u$ S h$ R- o- o7 W9 X
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
6 W9 x7 l' S1 e3 l0 c5 hthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
1 `7 r8 Z8 E6 h8 w- Yreunion he could ever imagine.
