The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 9 C2 z* a! I" }0 z
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
B1 k1 b) ], W. j1 Fin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October ! M- K, w6 ]' n" p$ k) |4 S
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
3 E. r2 Y. ~& t6 x3 |+ @their church, it was very run down and needed
4 d% J W# N- n4 v# R) R" {4 f& y+ gmuch work. They set a goal to have everything
! f5 X- B5 L) R! Tdone in time to have their first service
+ R& f2 s9 K0 n {on Christmas Eve. % A) ]% k1 I9 \
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,( \- g3 |. b! K. f6 |1 c
painting, etc, and on December 18 : _' \: P. Q; m; e" e
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. 8 i) k9 N9 ]2 s4 _9 Q5 X: {
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving ; W4 Z% ^$ [: D+ l
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
- S: _2 e* Q7 u9 _4 t O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.. q3 e' Z/ M. R7 o! F% i" J
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had6 a6 Z: l- O& e9 f! e. c
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about . [& r& y: S& w7 z
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
. C. t/ c \0 Rof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, & P9 ~& Q2 O2 x2 N8 }
beginning about head high. ' X/ U3 g& f/ p; @
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
7 ^8 ?6 v# v5 G+ r1 l0 }: zand not knowing what else to do but postpone
, z+ G: e9 o0 ^7 c1 Athe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
" m4 }! A! Q0 D6 NOn the way he noticed that a local business was * a1 i9 T, W0 S
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
1 {1 @, l0 B& B! U: lstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
]1 U# E5 c. ^; I2 Lhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth $ a K% h5 _6 |- {3 j$ a# d: K
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 5 L3 I7 ?. Y/ i1 t$ Q: y+ U$ h
embroidered right in the center. It was just 4 h( m4 U: i6 i7 R" T, f. [) p0 B
# f$ X/ Z) r9 J# l: S3 y H3 X e4 J" \

& } y# e! s/ c( o9 b; j

4 Y, d' K; i2 G9 o& n: g4 c. zthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
8 ^1 ? S& _7 H* }7 Q) _( BB y this time it had started to snow. An older
0 Q$ ?: n" G ]woman running from the opposite direction was ( U Z: u( `0 A9 ]. j; X
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
& K6 P) J2 {7 D& h# P winvited her to wait in the warm church for
$ c6 Q" l4 k' i, @0 _/ E( K. V4 Pthe next bus 45 minutes later.
c) P: J+ R: l& [. C* O) Y4 o4 P' S* e. Y
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
& E! ]0 k2 T0 n0 L9 Swhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put / T2 L T. _# f2 m
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor 7 ?4 i# M6 |) L: @0 I: f
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. k$ e- ? R7 u: T- m1 N* ~7 o
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center& j# G: H9 T" r2 _( l* ]$ v# p/ H
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
" R) e3 R' c( |& U/ ~she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" . H* V. B2 L a: j( w7 c
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
4 r& s, o) V6 `8 b# s6 k3 athe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
! Y5 a' L' u# q: W" O. V2 lit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
6 E# ]' G/ w; s# P$ Omade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . ; s# ~5 r9 ~, m% q7 U. l
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor / {: o5 a' x) d4 v$ v) T
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
. w4 |- ]/ }6 _- ]7 q6 qwoman explained that before the war she and
* ?8 p: [# _) Y) V$ C; i* hher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . ' h; |7 @ S1 G3 q. F
# `/ n4 i9 w7 W/ h- H$ F. wWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
6 T# p& d# o' t6 l! O7 Z- ^Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
9 G3 I! h* ?( PHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
8 w. o- W. C7 n* Rhusband or her home again. ( V2 P/ r9 d. n# ^# T+ J
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
9 a- O/ M1 t5 Kbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
6 ]( N, k& d$ A5 h6 `The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
/ l( j U2 X% Q, L' Q; I4 a; f vwas the least he could do. She lived on the other$ t _4 R2 _' S" Q. k6 A5 l3 _+ K' k7 D
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
6 b% f2 l" r4 Ofor the day for a housecleaning job.' C8 e( C0 y4 t) {# Z, G+ ^
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 2 k. m8 G; L- k
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 0 _1 b$ d7 Y9 z# `3 t2 _8 k
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
: ? ?* |% p; N4 `( T; G0 D! \3 E+ a% ~pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
* d- [, ?+ l. |+ u' kand many said that they would return.. ! m& m) ~' W/ \5 J. p3 \
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
- W; Z8 | u+ G( F7 p% }from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
2 H" c- g/ d7 r) e' g2 cpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
5 x( i/ Y# |7 e$ E- K- v, s6 Pwasn't leaving.
7 D- s. l! H% C2 MThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 6 r- C& M9 d5 |# D4 z- ~+ T
the front wall because it was identical to one
# Z; D6 ~, m" Lthat his wife had made years ago when 4 V0 g$ |4 y6 g
they lived in Austria before the war and how " R! v8 k0 ~' d" N, L' j/ L7 @' g
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
3 v$ g! x0 [6 U l) WH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
6 w& J# _5 _) X+ Pforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was " H* _9 {6 p! q4 u- _6 t" o
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and) a5 b4 a m/ i8 `5 m6 \' Y
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home0 m( H' G* q, \' |; i+ L* w
again all the 35 years between. * w- G5 n! g1 w* I, i
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
7 p$ n; {# x$ r+ y+ Etake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
+ X: u0 ~* B3 R3 b1 l2 ~2 a- zIsland and to the same house where the pastor
" d' R6 r/ ]% U. whad taken the woman three days earlier.
( i: E- I9 H3 U( g% kHe helped the man climb the three flights of
3 r4 Y( h4 g7 E5 {stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on' w0 H% p1 q5 H8 O5 E
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas + ~3 x9 b# a3 t) I
reunion he could ever imagine., v' r' {! J- u
