Edmonton's population grows by 30,000

0 z! A/ l' d- m3 O/ HEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.# v: A" n& g4 K7 T B- i
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.6 |: ]# |$ E/ a* j& x% A
The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.

0 I, q, s# A% h( O( t5 x5 k# U& \"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
! A4 u& v* ~: g: [# O3 HEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.9 [ A: m# o/ w
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
