FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. - Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU) and two of its contractors are headed to court next month after being charged with dumping partially-treated sewage from two work camps into a northern Alberta river.

The contractors charged are the Compass Group of Canada, which ran the camps, and Rodney McCabe, whose now-defunct company operated the two wastewater plants.

; O; Q3 i' [6 E! iThe charges laid last year under Alberta's Environmental Protection Act include failing to properly treat wastewater and providing false or misleading information to the environment ministry.9 Y, J' }& b9 n7 p- y5 g& T- h4 e
( L' z& ]1 J& s4 `! v WEnvironment Minister Rob Renner says the charges were laid after a routine audit found problems with the sewage discharge into the Athabasca River.

McCabe and Compass are refusing comment, but a Suncor spokesman says the sewage likely had very little impact on the water quality in the river.4 f& y% H4 a. H0 q6 t- U

The nearest downstream community is Fort MacKay, but a spokesman for the aboriginal settlement said the 600 residents take their water from another river that's not connected to the Athabasca. |
