The Multicultural Health Brokers Co-operative supports immigrant/refugee individuals and families to attain optimum health through relevant health education, community development and advocacy support. The MCHB seeks a Research Consultant with strong organizational/reporting skills for a community based research project and environmental scan of under and unemployed immigrants in the Edmonton ethno-cultural communities of Edmonton.

* F) u- C% c; ^; a! vThe Project: The purpose of the research project is to explore, define and document the issue of unemployment and underemployment within ethno-cultural communities in Edmonton. Focus groups and other activities will be coordinated within six ethno-cultural groups to create an inventory of the skills and abilities of unemployed and underemployed immigrants and refugees including youth (aged 25-30) with a working ability in English language.

* e7 N4 C& ~/ S# l! O$ ]Their employability profiles will be compared to the categories most highly requested in temporary foreign worker applications. Community animation will be used and a database of employable local immigrant workers with their skills will be created and made available to key stakeholders. 1 B/ o# T( R( J7 t; Z" j# x# A2 JResearch Consultant: He/she will have a background in community based research, instrument design and development. S/he will demonstrate an understanding of current issues in the Alberta workforce and be familiar with key government services supporting employment/immigration. The Research Consultant will work independently and as part of a core team that includes the Project Coordinator, Database Consultant and project support staff.# q! t; r* @# Z, B; E, R

Responsibilities: The research consultant will provide a final report synthesizing the findings from a community based research project gathering information on the barriers and solutions to employment for highly skilled and educated immigrants in the Edmonton area.

; d1 E8 F3 s0 {( v) y7 GProject responsibilities/deliverables include: provide ongoing support and feedback to the Project Coordinator in the design and implementation of a community based research strategy; support ongoing review and design of a participatory research process that includes focus groups discussions and an on-line tool gathering detailed information from highly skilled and educated immigrants in the Edmonton area.. 7 B9 ^& _& f* H$ q, A8 X# tPLUS: provide background research and support for the dBase Consultant to ensure that privacy legislation/practices are adhered to in the collection and storage of on-line participant personal data; conduct a review of relevant literature documenting barriers to employment for immigrants, employer and government strategies and recommendations for multi-sectoral change; data analysis of focus group discussions and on-line participant data; produce a detailed report synthesizing research findings and recommendations for action in line with the project goals.
