The Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers requires a fulltime Settlement Practitioner to deliver settlement services for Temporary Foreign Workers in the Edmonton region. This is a term position to March 31, 2010.

The project will focus on the following aspects of newcomers settlement services:5 _* C) [- l$ N# ^
• Marketing and outreach to industry and workers. c& d1 ]( A/ t; O* \
• Outreach delivery of “orientation, information and referral services”4 J1 G5 m W! f* h; x$ p
• Centre-based delivery of “orientation, information and referral services”0 ?, v# j7 O: @$ g; q
• Interpretation and translation services; C" R! R3 v3 g3 H! O
• Supportive counselling services ]& u4 z% C- I& R, Z: v) M' K+ S

The Settlement Practitioner will be a front line practitioner, providing settlement
- t, P; U$ Q, lguidance, information, orientation and referral services for Temporary Foreign
5 Q8 E! p, V* m* x9 mWorkers, including matters of employment, housing, language, immigration and
: d# \( O3 Y' B ~, `, i( `+ _supportive counselling by telephone, emails and in-person.

community based. Some internal and outreach weekend workshop facilitation is

implementing solutions for TFW facing a variety of challenges. It also involves) \7 y) w4 m, {2 C
maintaining all information and records required by the program guidelines.

Responsibilities
8 X7 ? n: Q1 ]$ _) g# Y• Provide a detailed needs assessment of TFW’s referred from EMCN staff,other service providers, industry employers, as well as self-referrals
* O0 x% A1 E, o% m0 ]/ @• Establish and maintain relationships between EMCN, other service providers and industries employing temporary foreign workers and promote settlement services at EMCN$ |5 z1 I V0 u" t& j
• Maintain close relationships with the Temporary Foreign Worker Advisory Office
. \' M& i$ s% N• Provide counselling to help temporary foreign workers adjust to Canadian life,make referrals when appropriate, develop needs assessment and action plans if required! l3 T- f7 I3 E$ R! D. Z. o# G
• Assist people to fill in application forms, prepare for meetings or appointments relating to settlement or employment
/ X B4 m( j+ J( S. g3 d" X• Take clients to view apartments, open bank accounts, register for healthcare and become familiar with community services+ {) f' M" | y" e( X* n/ h
• Assess and refer individuals experiencing critical or complex immigration and employment difficulties to appropriate service provider or government agency- t! Y& @, w. F4 }/ k4 B) X
• Facilitate and coordinate delivery of workshops related to settlement of TFW ! L( w }3 N0 u
• Promote English language services for TFW and employers4 [# t' c( e5 s% ~ V6 P
• Arrange interpretation and translation services as required
' s8 A5 J( F1 x• Strengthen and build supports with community groups and volunteers* P4 t( |. [" {) c
• Provide service delivery duties as required Desired skills, education and experience:
$ ?# N' N! C1 K1 }2 _" y( E& ]• Minimum of 2 years of previous experience as a Settlement Practitioner in an intercultural/multicultural/cross-cultural context+ ^ u* J' q9 D' \2 b) w9 d# t
• Relevant post-secondary education in social science or human service area/ d" ]; n6 E, f+ T: v9 |( i
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
% Y2 V0 E" Q- B) v8 k& D• Strong commitment to providing quality services to newcomers and to working in an intercultural environment with cultural competence
; h" r0 H: X8 S+ q4 x• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-based workplace, demonstrating flexibility in organizing work, showing initiative,judgment, resourcefulness, good decision-making

• Spanish language proficiency is an asset
