The Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers requires a fulltime Settlement Practitioner to deliver settlement services for Temporary Foreign Workers in the Edmonton region. This is a term position to March 31, 2010.% R8 ^: V6 N4 [+ q. R' e

The project will focus on the following aspects of newcomers settlement services:) \1 r0 p5 k+ z* ~
• Marketing and outreach to industry and workers

• Centre-based delivery of “orientation, information and referral services”. T7 T$ f$ d- E0 ]; r

The Settlement Practitioner will be a front line practitioner, providing settlement3 G" ]- b2 |" ]$ n( T
guidance, information, orientation and referral services for Temporary Foreign* f' ~5 e+ P' ]. }
Workers, including matters of employment, housing, language, immigration and
0 z) A* ~* ]7 zsupportive counselling by telephone, emails and in-person. W0 o% t8 R, J& C a3 M

The Settlement Practitioner will also be required to deliver information and
/ f2 c% W1 J1 R# t& S& d- \orientation workshops related to settlement needs of Temporary Foreign workers.
/ l" j6 b0 E; ]1 i+ qWorkshops and group sessions will be centre-based, employer/industry based and' w8 i9 U( g# v6 F
community based. Some internal and outreach weekend workshop facilitation is
+ @+ ]4 K- U9 T1 m Qrequired. The ability to work flexible hours is essential.1 S9 n W7 k9 o' x' r3 u

This position involves working as part of a team to provide services, create an( E+ _1 D9 k1 d! V0 [. D9 w( g
understanding of temporary foreign worker settlement issues, being innovative and" Q3 u, t1 D7 L; A
implementing solutions for TFW facing a variety of challenges. It also involves1 M. C: i- J/ s# A

• Provide a detailed needs assessment of TFW’s referred from EMCN staff,other service providers, industry employers, as well as self-referrals6 F; \& s6 G- Q0 j& n/ {6 X
• Establish and maintain relationships between EMCN, other service providers and industries employing temporary foreign workers and promote settlement services at EMCN* A- c3 ?$ f. D/ q& ] D
• Maintain close relationships with the Temporary Foreign Worker Advisory Office. |; P3 c, R& e
• Provide counselling to help temporary foreign workers adjust to Canadian life,make referrals when appropriate, develop needs assessment and action plans if required& m3 n F9 t! p" b; F; ]! f) L
• Assist people to fill in application forms, prepare for meetings or appointments relating to settlement or employment
9 W ]3 s/ \7 N; Y( i0 `! t/ \• Take clients to view apartments, open bank accounts, register for healthcare and become familiar with community services1 W8 u4 a; K: W" ^0 q9 X0 M1 {
• Assess and refer individuals experiencing critical or complex immigration and employment difficulties to appropriate service provider or government agency
+ B0 y: {4 |3 { M0 N1 H( f0 `• Facilitate and coordinate delivery of workshops related to settlement of TFW
* _3 _5 o' H+ L6 J• Promote English language services for TFW and employers

• Strengthen and build supports with community groups and volunteers

% O+ N2 C [+ W1 w% {: a• Minimum of 2 years of previous experience as a Settlement Practitioner in an intercultural/multicultural/cross-cultural context- v0 A( e2 |; N
• Relevant post-secondary education in social science or human service area
+ p4 I" a9 x e- h8 e3 I: H0 m- Y• Excellent written and oral communication skills ?) c6 _+ j3 l* x
• Strong commitment to providing quality services to newcomers and to working in an intercultural environment with cultural competence
1 ?" X' w5 O" {0 S. G• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-based workplace, demonstrating flexibility in organizing work, showing initiative,judgment, resourcefulness, good decision-making
* ], C4 N8 p3 F* q• Proficiency in English is essential, as is fluency in other languages
$ w- b0 q. a; y3 F• Spanish language proficiency is an asset
