5 P* Z: I% i/ R, {* O0 O4 u+ u7 I5 `Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

% A" M3 }; {9 E* W: @9 g& aYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 2 t* F# ^8 w7 F/ H# j
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
6 ]6 f1 j# ~; S1 Enews to report from that meeting.
! T6 |6 \) k& j# K3 h4 T. u9 b3 H9 F i
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
% |1 W- `3 V5 } W% s) \1 X! O; Bundergraduate international students from the increase to the
( [4 V# Q2 O1 S! u% k! K1 v: mdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international " f8 c: V. F9 z% Q# A3 y# T
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
- f) e1 f4 ?( B; f+ f$ z& Ctuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
/ w% h- ]. b- B: f3 yAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
, x( ?7 r+ l6 u. X( q( |. P* K; v- l' wthe differential for international graduate students.' d9 e/ f/ Z4 z7 ?3 c, c& [ N' \

Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an ! ?% W8 k- F0 U0 n( K. |' l6 y
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to & A8 K1 H$ G$ g- I$ R+ C9 d
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
# b" b0 D' i% r6 S! pwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
. A+ f* ~ }! v; R- z# Q" Jleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
( a' q5 l6 m# k7 z* E; }tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
6 R1 h4 f0 R4 J( T1 S* I/ vincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 0 } f" K$ a8 t a
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
