Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
$ O; W5 H- D8 s9 r4 r, J! S1 d% H, xCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad ' h* a3 ]' {+ U. U& L, Q5 C( X
news to report from that meeting.; v0 H v9 E# H9 X6 `9 |; K/ k
3 N$ Z3 U' C" Q+ ?0 S( K* L
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current , ^4 ]- h4 W, U' n
undergraduate international students from the increase to the % ~9 j! Y3 Y3 C
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
9 ?3 Z0 b4 n, |+ rstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base ; } @! ~, P4 h* O/ ^( m- m; T
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). , r3 A9 {6 w5 `3 P% J! h! m7 H0 j
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
; Q# n A" n1 m! l k, ]the differential for international graduate students.
@% O, u; u) \. U! t+ ~8 F! O0 p5 q) a0 m+ A7 Q
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an ` j; q$ i. ?$ T( P- r, G. f2 v
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
! j. }4 `' c& J+ A/ w0 ~- @" L: e220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
6 Y$ L( W8 Y' d+ E, ywill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
7 Q" a4 @- M; A( l Cleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 7 j" j- a/ Y$ a8 X8 r2 @2 e3 d6 _
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected ' x" `" z8 \/ j% [2 N3 k
increases once they are here.

4 o. N% m( M3 [+ `! `The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 4 n% G8 L, z( b5 [
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I * |" v' _/ J- P4 G+ U9 |
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that r3 x! ^0 Z0 e+ T, y
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this . Z1 u. l7 E# R3 y5 J# l
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your + a8 b3 p; P6 t1 H4 q
