Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 4 x6 k" N; h) |* b
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
0 \7 j; R% V7 |/ r6 X4 e6 \# ~0 Jnews to report from that meeting.8 }7 ?' B0 \* A0 p, A
: I9 |) |* d8 t
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current $ c/ ~3 o6 s% V6 j8 ~: M) M% w4 j* u! H
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
& _5 i/ a8 a& E$ p" ~% r% F5 l bdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
! C" N- R: \8 d: Bstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base % ^! G- e( ~8 n- {; `, Q1 b( @( F
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). + n2 p2 I" _, H. n3 K- ?. Q
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase + @0 w& H. J# V& _8 J; n$ l i v# }
the differential for international graduate students.- }1 T4 ?4 J% g
; K% f8 `7 K8 h, _; BNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an : }7 ~* Z6 z% G9 A! P
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
( O$ }! S4 w' G! {220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 4 J" f; H; C3 [: n H; ^7 X
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
& z; [2 y2 m; tleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
Y/ o: |0 Z/ {1 [2 w, x6 \tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
# R& X( I z" @6 U* l: mincreases once they are here.7 w* t3 W, I) f0 K

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the ( d& b" I: ?% k: Y" j1 ~0 g
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
/ R# u! Q2 v3 f* X" Z9 C5 Owould like to say thank you to all of the international students that # L1 ^; s* W2 k' m# E4 Z
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
! y* ?' O3 K2 X1 yincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
