Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. & \ `* l" p+ H R, Z

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 9 ~! L/ r+ y1 q$ u! j+ {
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 1 ]: L+ k, y. m( ]2 o9 y% e8 r
news to report from that meeting.+ ?9 b8 f# ?# b( A1 t
# A9 t' T( |" V! g" F/ B
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current : x! B9 `7 T7 z3 q' m$ B
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
1 x- ~, Z+ L" n" o/ Tdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international % L% @0 B! j, n/ G0 A
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
8 }0 p5 W) c) R0 o" _& ltuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). ; D' d2 Z1 |% Q! r
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 0 d$ c- u6 F; U3 y2 e- _8 a
the differential for international graduate students.
# `8 z/ Q: k7 I/ v! g7 U
) u5 c* n* D1 dNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an ' r0 e5 _% g$ @ h- o" z4 ? X) y
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
! ]$ c5 }7 ^: C220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 0 i& u+ U$ M, i2 `
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
" @7 [: b* l8 q+ fleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in : d1 O% G+ D |7 q0 a4 I8 O
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected ; u! D/ m) P* ? c; X! M2 v, W5 V
increases once they are here.

2 g/ N3 ?' L$ e0 K1 X: K! rThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
( P% u" Q5 O* w# ^! q6 O0 w* Ninternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

$ W# Y" r, _2 Y. \: P/ k+ y: s. qhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this $ t, k6 m% H* U% a
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your - y# Q9 V' g2 }! A6 }! i; c% R
