# L! f9 q) e( Q& N ], rGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

* y' Y2 ], v/ N/ H- g6 s! `8 dYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties : W! Y/ Y9 p8 f% i
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
" X4 J1 n( Y* {; M+ lnews to report from that meeting., O6 l9 x1 h. _" h% z
0 ?) j- a& j5 S: Y5 SFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
7 h% h9 I q2 Qundergraduate international students from the increase to the , L0 } b9 j) S5 ^' h
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
( s+ |3 U9 f' S9 C2 k3 s# estudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
: E5 K8 x5 e. ktuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). ! A3 u/ |% Q% G: p5 C4 M1 _
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 0 s' \7 _4 s' t% h7 D) t2 A
the differential for international graduate students.: x9 a$ t7 c( l; z
+ n ?5 O- @, ^% s9 L. qNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
% W! Y. x* T2 E( Fincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
# x- o0 R1 l) e- m2 p220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
* K. y% ]2 J% d# _2 W" X: h' xwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 9 p7 D* \+ Y2 H/ A$ ~+ P
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 4 {% e5 N, j h2 W* U1 A7 \
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
+ D2 Y* j1 _) ?0 @increases once they are here.( Z+ i( T z/ z4 h+ T% S

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the / H/ e+ ^) l( i" V! R0 G) z
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 4 o( R6 H3 w+ ]" \( t* h# E. N
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your ; R: E5 i0 ~6 `0 S/ U* a
help. Thank you.
