Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. " k3 e/ v7 S6 [. t t2 o* f, D

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

* d$ [0 w" \2 K1 F2 V2 T) g/ C9 W4 SYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 3 I5 m7 S y# A' v- `. R$ X
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
; R; N$ P% L ?! o7 m" b% n6 lnews to report from that meeting.( B+ A/ U0 ~0 ~" W9 M
/ c( I8 i! g/ w# K; I' hFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 2 z/ w. M. `2 j
undergraduate international students from the increase to the & U6 K+ \7 W T$ x( c
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
% M8 r7 R0 m: V/ l3 Tstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 7 E ]3 o, J# f6 p6 U
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 3 ?" a- g q5 e5 v
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase . M/ \/ g) D E H. ]% q. A, b
the differential for international graduate students.

" B! @* [ x. p/ d4 D1 a' n _Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
W: n7 S& e+ L; S1 gincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 6 V# A9 ?3 u- E+ s- _2 @) S
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
, n2 [. h$ {6 o# Rwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At ( v$ f7 V# d [! ]% J
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
6 R! k, J: D( V: q( j$ }# y" [* dtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected ; c6 T9 e& i3 D
increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
6 s& s1 `9 J' O( K+ Jinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I % l8 A& Q8 s8 Q: _, e
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that $ G* M/ a& s" }2 |4 ]( }1 }
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this + D% S# `8 N8 n' _: J% H+ H4 k) ^8 l
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
