Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

! j0 P  O, T2 {' F" zYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
# ~5 z6 \: D6 X- E9 K2 q8 o+ YCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
news to report from that meeting.

1 a* T4 n: l. N  _First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
. n, I5 z- a' L' ~undergraduate international students from the increase to the
0 K. v7 g; v" f* f& Ydifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
0 D+ G( l; o0 r  M) g( vtuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
$ C) g: y& j) ~! _! m  lAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
3 m* V% _5 F6 \# O0 |6 ^the differential for international graduate students.

Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
' q9 f/ F) X0 l7 ^; O' H, Fwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
1 d( j% t; P+ H7 Gincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
8 j" c% Y- L4 e6 w+ x4 C$ d: Jwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
; Y5 f! B6 v" c( _have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
help. Thank you.
