When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and

While I was paying 340CAD/month for more than a year, I抦 paying

increases the tuition fee by few percent every year and international ! x3 Q. ?: h( R# I% p
differential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this,

and most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were
* O; O# t8 h0 {' I6 p7 {9 Easked to look for a residence on open market.

1 A6 w: h4 X9 v+ Z6 l5 y0 }1 KWhile the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has
5 u3 J# Q4 w3 N' |1 l4 K& Z, Lincreased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid
+ d' a N h: p- w' g+ vexactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our - u, p# F% Z. o
admission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students 6 e ~5 S. b2 u. L1 T* k* X
=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after
: A7 P7 A8 y7 t1 P5 p- S( G/ A( ]tuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just + r* W1 |$ w2 e/ a. ]+ \
imagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am $ H! }, s6 j2 @, r2 `6 N* B
getting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of " _& r+ s, c0 l0 T
us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was / N7 E. s- U% Z& ]. y
admitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.' {7 K2 e2 s1 ?/ `5 k4 v2 D

Also have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of $ ]3 ]+ v, ~( Y
Alberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants
{% B; R& q; Lfrom different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate 4 t8 \) l3 i' b4 U' t' j/ z
students are the main pillars of research work at the university.

is to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and 2 }6 B: i' M/ k1 R) [- D. ~
especially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take- p, I; }1 ^0 c" r- l* m5 d. z

initiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for 7 }, S2 A3 O/ M7 B1 G0 |
graduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?
