differential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this, . r2 T/ Z3 \" w/ W: C
the fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers , e. N! v9 j, E! K7 f5 C
and most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were
. q9 C/ E# y3 F9 L% |' O9 Xasked to look for a residence on open market.7 I! W W9 ? B ]3 z
8 b( I& c7 |; t" ~/ \" ~While the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has
- | R {: p1 \& X* @) Vincreased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid ; M2 y& U* Z& L4 C+ a* {
exactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our
) F A8 v9 f" U) o. Sadmission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students
4 J- J4 c+ J: D- \=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after
" u: X( P0 Y3 ftuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just

( Z9 c1 p; I# O& e+ I* S5 N( `getting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of
; _5 m4 E, ?1 o- J/ h# z Vus) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was

Alberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants + n/ u1 d9 W& i# z
from different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate
; }! |9 C2 ~7 R1 q- @: @students are the main pillars of research work at the university.9 _5 v0 }+ D2 E' `
4 ~9 ^# ^, U4 U8 T+ zMy objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention
# w( |) Z, |8 J! f7 j( G! [is to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and
7 f, V* ~8 B ~) vespecially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take
$ A; R# _7 @! M' z5 B ) [& y* _4 @8 P" e, C& z5 h, J
initiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for
$ a9 w0 G+ A; E* _ V/ J1 Q+ wgraduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?% G+ Z" C9 L, S) O
