CHIEF RETURNING OFFICER

JOB SUMMARY:  The Chief Returning Officer reports to the President of  - D& F+ z, n0 K  ]6 b/ f4 p' b% a
the Students' Union and oversees all electoral logistics as per Bylaw  
% E0 @/ m5 J$ h5 y7 B& d, X2000.  The Chief Returning Officer shall be recommended to Students'  $ ?  Z7 Y3 d- B; X4 J7 l
Council in the manner set out in the Council Administration Committee  # g2 V. l; w- F) g! q+ J6 w0 L6 d
Standing Orders by April 15 and serve from May 1 to April 30 of the  7 w* {+ w  F$ H- \/ A4 R, E7 @

1) To run the elections as per Bylaws 20008 b. }7 o2 [- Y2 {, K- ~1 F

; Y, N+ n1 K" Z+ ~) T6 A1 Z2) To run referenda/plebiscites as per Bylaw 2000.
5 F* r0 w8 L  L9 I3 N1 Y
+ i) f. j7 z! A" v  l6 U3) To choose the Deputy Returning Officer(s) and assign their duties.
: j# M7 A* M% l2 b5 K, |) q, E) U( F5 D: L& @# E8 |& p
4) To organize polls during elections/referenda, including appointing  ) L, w, J, q) M1 ~! v8 i4 s
adequate poll staff and situating polls at appropriate locations  
3 k+ t  W+ `4 h- C9 h( Nacross campus, and advertising the poll locations.
7 |6 V' \5 c5 y: ^0 z0 k
- I0 ^! ]5 }, ~' |5) To oversee the physical count of the ballots during elections/
9 G3 |8 Y! Q3 h! Wreferenda.

$ z. y( ?% x* S4 l% G3 p6) To report the result of an election/referendum to the appropriate  1 Q) z* e9 n& _2 e* p2 d) x) y4 C
parties.

7) To facilitate classroom speaking arrangements during an election/ . C' u4 I$ L6 k, d: n6 J
referendum.. R+ H3 L( g( e4 ~' O

$ J" R. [6 C2 V8 A; M* D1 @5 f To enforce budgetary regulations as stipulated in the Elections  
# R! s$ ~& s' S/ R; o6 wBylaw 2000.7 {- d0 l( ?; o$ u- C) i

. V& l" |. J! n. a10) To be available to all parties during elections/referenda for a  
  m$ d- o; |3 H8 Gminimum of four (4) working hours a day, between Monday to Friday,  
+ y3 v  @* U% H- Efrom the first working day after nominations close until the last day    g. r4 E0 B5 K4 ~! G/ g
of voting.  These hours are to be posted in advance.
, D  _6 b  p3 }# E' h$ ^
1 w9 o/ s% K' O2 K6 o0 X11) To act as the arbitrator in any dispute which may arise during  ( G- k2 `* Q2 _* u
the course of an election/referendum.
  ]$ j4 i8 _& m% V8 k  e  k$ r3 e$ l
12) To ensure that a cost effective and accurate ballot counting  + Z; Q- N' u# t2 A( W
process is in place.

6 X- ], [. ~  [3 w- ^- X13) To submit to Students' Council, prior to April 30, a final report  7 z9 r9 ~9 T/ p, p) x
of activities and recommendations.1 h% \7 P  i% F. W8 D. y

14) To organize a minimum of one (1) forum to be held during the week  9 Q4 w" F6 U. b1 Y+ y# l7 N9 v! c. V* Y
of campaigning./ m0 _6 J1 |2 j  z5 X4 X. Y2 Y

; t3 i' D6 w( |0 _* H( |& A" m, ]15) Perform other job related duties as required by the Council  " X3 B9 f. a7 X+ H

& }+ [+ j% j- g+ G( j7 g2 v$ DQUALIFICATIONS:

  q9 g3 [- o5 H/ s& ]$ L# H. Y+ W6 o1) Must be an undergrad student registered in at least one (1) course  1 d3 q% @7 C3 z3 U/ O( w' P
for each of the terms of Winter Session and shall be a full Students'  ) E0 r! y0 [% _! j, P3 a2 U
Union member.
; ]8 s2 b& H! x" @! S' i. R. B  V4 H, ^% E
2) Must have some experience in student elections.

$ V; ~; Q) ^5 M1 }/ G+ a$ V3) Shall not concurrently hold a position on Students' Council, or  
, t$ k& q3 k5 I0 X% g1 I6 x+ Yany of its standing boards, committees, or any other paid position  
  ]0 S8 H$ ?- `8 l* hwith the Students' Union.1 X7 A, w/ L3 O( j
0 `' z* ?: R5 Q* L
4) Willingness and ability to work varying hours.; Q' d$ t7 x' \

% g6 w" j0 }/ _5) Ability to deal effectively with Students' Union and University
