Today I was volunteering at a post office. A man in an old jacket with uncombed hair came to the counter. He had a wallet in his hand, and put it on the counter. He told me:
# z$ K* C0 Y& C) w3 G8 v"I am going to send it back".
$ j8 W, x1 y! |I did not understand what he meant by "it", because usually people would send a letter or a parcel back to the sender, and I did not see he had any of those. So I asked him:
5 K& p1 v3 g$ C/ v0 ~) ] "I am sorry, what are you sending back?" 9 J; k$ l H& w, S
He said, "the Wallet, I am sending back the wallet." Then he added: "I am going to pay the postage." | t+ v8 n, i, Q$ o3 B
"Oh, you found a wallet, and you are going to send it back to the person who lost it?" g+ J7 s T M& }6 F
"Yes, I did."3 ^ v! f' }( D, z
Finally I understood: this dishevelled man found a wallet, and he was going to return it to the owner by post.
6 J+ u" i- k6 `9 d* D3 _He took the ID card from the wallet, and showed me the address of the loser of the wallet. I saw there were several one-hundred bills in the wallet. ) ^( W) c' ~! w& Q2 r' _/ E
"Are you going to take some money from the wallet to pay the postage?", q$ |& n8 i; y/ Q* R
"No, I am not. I do not do those things."9 W+ _- c8 H) \9 ]/ d2 N3 e
He took out his wallet, which was nearly worn-out, small, and almost empty. There were some coins inside.
! F3 k6 R0 }2 E, k. ^8 G/ ^& {! [1 G) wI gave him a bubbled envelope, and instructed him where to write the addresses. He wrote the owner's address, but stopped at writing a return address. He asked:
4 o/ h3 G N5 Z; e"Is it okay that I do not write this part?"
! D; X! U/ e" U) l9 t* _% B% E"Yes, you may." I thought he must want to be a nameless hero. But he said:: j$ @/ J0 s$ D
"I do not have an address."7 t+ W. \- D8 U) v/ B
I was surprised: "oh, where do you live?"& s+ ^$ K/ S8 g* r. x2 O
He did not look up, and said: "I do not have a home.": b1 `% r' k4 L; R- {
My heart had a sudden jump. I realized that this is a homeless man who found money but was sending it back to the person who lost it.
