Today I was volunteering at a post office. A man in an old jacket with uncombed hair came to the counter. He had a wallet in his hand, and put it on the counter. He told me: + f$ y/ G( g' [
"I am going to send it back". # b5 L6 F& R! T
I did not understand what he meant by "it", because usually people would send a letter or a parcel back to the sender, and I did not see he had any of those. So I asked him:$ U5 s7 L; P5 M) p. B
"I am sorry, what are you sending back?"
- t3 @2 S3 r8 X: Y/ nHe said, "the Wallet, I am sending back the wallet." Then he added: "I am going to pay the postage." : B4 B. X$ @" d" D, g
"Oh, you found a wallet, and you are going to send it back to the person who lost it?" 8 F, h( X) ^+ Y* ~
"Yes, I did."2 S9 N# ~8 i! f4 ^8 V% @& A
Finally I understood: this dishevelled man found a wallet, and he was going to return it to the owner by post.
, d1 p0 o: M1 e1 N0 U. c& }He took the ID card from the wallet, and showed me the address of the loser of the wallet. I saw there were several one-hundred bills in the wallet. - p- E8 w( h* B* k G6 S
"Are you going to take some money from the wallet to pay the postage?"
4 ]/ {" R* H0 _' T% h+ c"No, I am not. I do not do those things."
1 K0 p) D6 m4 k2 \' r2 }& DHe took out his wallet, which was nearly worn-out, small, and almost empty. There were some coins inside.
' y0 d" Q' q" oI gave him a bubbled envelope, and instructed him where to write the addresses. He wrote the owner's address, but stopped at writing a return address. He asked:7 C5 B9 m( v& H: g7 w5 j) @' V
"Is it okay that I do not write this part?"
' b" S) G2 w$ P U/ N"Yes, you may." I thought he must want to be a nameless hero. But he said:% J0 o" W' S0 T
"I do not have an address." l s4 B! X2 V0 @. p) a" P
I was surprised: "oh, where do you live?"
2 H# K5 @# H7 t- k& w. E4 A# z7 N0 PHe did not look up, and said: "I do not have a home."
3 f. j: m7 n( T0 V6 @+ CMy heart had a sudden jump. I realized that this is a homeless man who found money but was sending it back to the person who lost it.
, V9 T3 H3 b: I$ Y8 pHe did not a posses a home, but he had a big heart. He had the precious fortune of being a man of integrity.
