1) Community Dialogue Project Phase 1
( {8 t4 G: C" a# I4 g: dI'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.
2 O& }/ o! d+ SIn phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
9 c4 r* p1 Y" I3 C$ U, S) \Engagement Training.4 [7 R& V! g$ {% z4 _* v/ U6 p' {
0 [; s ]. H3 B) t0 J& g9 X4 {+ a! e
We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
% r, k" C' k9 K: E, j4 X(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood' p3 q) A( V4 I8 d6 q N
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
" T2 h9 h, O1 `5 @together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy3 {7 K0 r' R8 }0 R
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.. w/ x8 c/ _# t1 F

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
* q: P2 Q: f$ G' m6 a6 f3 q4 E+ e/ HPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years( i& V4 B# G, B7 n
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
9 h5 Q4 f* I9 g9 a' vconflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the$ m. ~. [& w" d' v; |) b. B" \: `
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
0 C9 ?% [( ` m+ }) Vthey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
" P6 T' Q% M$ Y ?: |Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
. Z7 R& Q* J( L$ p$ ^! Pisland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
T$ ^: E$ y2 c2 M8 u0 U$ h8 Vinternational peacekeeping operation.
$ X, }* ~/ U, R# a! Q# D8 m/ V: w8 c ]
This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
1 t" T/ R' }2 h: e5 Hown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people) h2 h) J _. C& Q- a3 P) A
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
: ?9 \( x: ]2 w* Lscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and
* |/ b* Y2 E' B; }$ \1 l3 L% RAfghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
7 J% V4 I+ U) K" S4 m* U8 X1 ~, [improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
7 Z0 l% O9 M* Y0 l; yand music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!
! f% y% I% @1 C# n, [# D3 L6 I+ D) C0 c
According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the6 s" T2 k( G! W+ Q# o0 ]! Q! h$ _
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole& [8 D4 R& w5 X4 I& V! T# x6 a, u/ l2 s
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the& e( w% X- \4 h( U3 @4 f
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
9 [6 B& o+ P& JAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
9 K! F8 @2 @. d( Y' Rso we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
