I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.* L j$ b7 Z$ s9 W0 B: V. b. b7 M
In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
# ?% _0 w; N9 v9 ~Engagement Training.' i$ y0 t4 I: \' i! }) i
: h8 G4 M4 l& \We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,* R$ ~$ C/ ?) }( W$ E
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
; Z- p. x( P% V4 \groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work6 u4 `' f2 U3 t K1 L
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy! M& w2 Z% i7 P/ a+ C- g9 m
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000." a4 w' T/ L& e- t. i

" K; i9 l* `. q5 a0 XPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
+ j- r8 p, U- j! s0 S \6 B9 hof fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter- T+ Y! w! w- {+ @4 U% S
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
8 @7 m; p y" \: N7 g( Vinternational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
6 }, w6 h) i+ lthey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
$ {6 Q' I0 a& f. aIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
* v% ]5 _$ a% g9 O3 M; R! Xisland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
' s. C k+ V) H' i" U/ b+ p4 ]/ Hinternational peacekeeping operation.2 S, Q# w6 R- ?- l6 Y# D

This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their% z3 l8 S7 Z& z) x( P; Z- [
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
; N+ F; O5 b) s$ ywho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
. n% d1 j. o! \/ C2 b. Nscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and# N9 v2 ^% r! J0 }$ _" o
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems5 q% l" F1 {+ j7 o1 i. ?& B% A
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs1 l/ Z& [. O* c, s4 a# c2 q: o
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!( Q* K" o7 u& X7 _/ d2 y: p
7 ^( a4 P0 O) P3 W
According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
6 H; d9 C- ]& d3 e1 [success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole0 G* ]) X. x% o3 e: Z5 v, b" w0 a0 s
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the* L% }" I: n6 O2 ?
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
9 v( O) Q+ _" u& \( _) c7 iAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,& _2 d0 N4 w5 D \* h
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."1 x" u. ]$ {& h [! k, g8 g
