　　North country scene:

  ]  k* I2 Z- {6 b5 c& q5 `　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

9 z  ^" ~( g. e' V/ C6 `　　Both sides of the Great Wall

2 v1 |) c" W" _) x, i　　One single white immensity.

　　The Yellow River"s swift current

　　Is stilled from end to end.

　　The mountains dance like silver snakes

( I& F* x, [4 @2 [1 j　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

* _6 }% D  p- D8 m# E( b' e& U9 o　　Vying with heaven in stature.
; S5 A& ^/ j5 Q. _+ Q+ z3 h1 E- T
1 x2 j+ N" H# I" T　　On a fine day, the land,

　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

1 p' W7 v+ {9 n　　Grows more enchanting.

! Q1 B8 g5 n' v# E' ?　　This land so rich in beauty

& X0 X: Q0 H4 C! x4 [/ v　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti

　　Were lacking in literary grace,

8 J& a9 ~9 ]8 b! S+ b! Q　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu
! ^. ]) y0 ~9 H3 A" g* O
　　Had little poetry in their souls;
　　And Genghis Khan,

　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,

　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

7 ]. x+ I" D& d. E　　All are past and gone!

　　For truly great men
$ L; x$ p9 Y9 N% x7 g8 G1 y
　　Look to this age alone.
