谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语+ L4 M1 J! }4 c  _% m  w

4 Z& G( V. {% v9 y2 e' n
* A6 f  B( s3 B/ c- \$ b在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯
; U- H3 U3 j3 c7 H0 P" I# r之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。) B" F! {' \( E$ q8 t" s
若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!3 e! W7 Z: ?$ \; ]

(1) empty suit:7 h) y/ n, L) m! n! r
指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。1 s; m5 ?$ m8 _/ [. O4 A) D' |
(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)* X3 \: k3 z$ T; \/ B" w6 e
例如:7 x, f, T9 c" k" s  }/ a; A2 x- n# W
An empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.* \# Y3 |; x1 ?$ O0 R
(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)
8 u9 K( h5 l2 gMr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.
3 B+ G3 Z9 _+ i' X9 X# [& V(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)
( E: C: w# P% ~4 N虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:. ?5 \( Z# Z" h# y4 q
The company is filled with a lot of empty suits.: ]  ~! ]* x9 z/ ?
(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)
8 }8 a- q" W# Q( W* }0 N(2) fair-haired boy:
. h# J2 X6 z, w  }( i指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)
/ M3 t0 K; U; t# A5 P* ~(通常用单数,当名词用)
+ J3 H. v. [  L( v例如:
+ [7 s5 ]4 |, k, U' v; u$ PMr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.2 ?* |4 Q% e# E- t* I
( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)
. R( b1 ]$ z' V  \1 X  [, sNot being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.
7 r2 |( p5 P# X(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)
' a) p5 N6 ]$ ~8 [1 @; _; h有时也可用复数:0 ~) ~  C& U2 J
Mr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.

9 z% W7 P2 J* g0 j/ q% D* \9 LFair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.- k# G6 i! k/ h3 {8 e$ G
(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)+ \7 ~4 `- p5 M
(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)
& A8 Q: T* J: q# Y" A7 l(3) fishing expedition:9 K9 M7 @% l1 N* I7 V6 F! [
为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)% T% z4 V' w6 W1 a* @( Y* p2 |
(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)
+ W. {+ q8 S1 C! b+ x例如:3 l/ D9 [! L/ N7 G/ d7 L
The judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.. ~- a$ Z! i' H  H' ]) {
(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)3 G# Q3 y+ `7 D8 f* Z& N2 b4 a
The police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.
  G" }7 P0 m* }  j4 R(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)( i0 {- i6 Z$ D0 U: b
(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)  p+ G5 D6 g% i# V4 Q
The reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.1 n& R' c1 V/ ]
(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)
! ]# q& _: }+ ^5 C5 R( a8 A偶尔也有人用复数:
9 v! ^! ]8 g2 P" F' {' E$ u+ ySeveral fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.
  j: B% }+ ~8 |% k(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)& A( L0 o0 g, b7 p& q) j& _
(4) filthy rich:
% C( R' k6 m4 q8 v  J) b意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)
8 B, X. M5 T/ E3 `1 f(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)
( X- n: n. g3 m. Y: U多半当形容词用。例如:
0 L8 T) O/ S# l+ E1 }With a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.
4 `1 ?  I9 L0 Z( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)9 [# I: Y# A( a2 J& f3 k
Despite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.
( Y) ~( m2 W& e  K2 M6 m4 R(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)
, b9 G& Z/ s; R6 cA filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.
7 a/ `  X% j* D5 K/ U# ?. t(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)
' ^( d1 L9 P7 J6 }/ |9 P0 XFilthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.

1 d: `* K- |; X- _, z1 l(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法)

指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)
* G4 h4 p0 w' o" `2 j(多半指有钱的女人)
. F- p: M6 s9 K2 p(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:' W7 h' V" S+ P! ]; _
Mr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.. h$ m) ]) ~  f6 j: [: U9 I3 |
(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)
# }1 `/ E( P( j* U8 |+ KAfter lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.$ W- j* D: a) i5 g: v4 g! m2 g
(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)
% T9 G8 V* Y. e) ]1 o" E# i# k有时也用复数:. O- P) r. W3 L' U5 B( J2 A: [
Only business women can act as fairy godmothers.) v9 e- R1 Z. ]3 l
(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)
7 t( B4 o& |7 p/ A( dIn Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.
' e1 i* I3 Q0 y(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)

% o, M4 s9 U8 K# `- [6 d! b指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)+ J/ S# G2 e" r  d( s" B
(当名词用;通常只用单数)
$ P, Y; S0 G* z# X1 [" z2 G例如:: E+ i8 {0 Z  K6 N
Your wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.9 ~% |; O7 |$ W
(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)% r) z, r- l' q7 g0 \3 _' G' x
Mr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.0 j9 W- B$ y3 I1 ~, p
(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)
( k5 ~0 }: h; u# mThe popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.9 e; B  y& Q. ^  F, T6 F

(7) hot dog:$ a9 }# S$ K5 u& b4 f
指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)
$ ^- c: }" k% ]& W例如:
+ l) e6 y4 B' K8 K* V" V6 _Some young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.2 N, p2 R1 O- e' P
(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)
+ q! q5 j7 C# V, v% A6 H+ B(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)4 O8 v% U: x$ l2 x$ t/ a
In front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.( w% r5 x3 \# c$ V
(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)
7 d& ?3 ?% O; ~! k% J- Y( G(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)' K( b6 ?1 N3 W1 v
During the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.

指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)" j% X5 Z, c' Z, F! W$ ~$ @
(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)8 d" K; Y0 ~! V
(当名词用,可指男女)# x2 y; R& v) ]" G) d, m! t; \8 W
例如:
, C) I) H, S5 U+ o3 lJohn seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.
0 U4 h! F; b- L; @: ^9 x. h! i(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)
+ r7 D: t' n2 o" B$ rBeing an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.8 q1 H0 e* |$ Z% b
(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。); Q7 \2 C8 A0 b/ P
Does Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?
' O3 B4 k5 e" _% Z3 H(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)
% @( x8 Q5 b; A1 RYou may find some eager beavers in any organizations.: o7 E# @% H8 r. b
(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。)
2 N' S* u$ |4 @: s% E8 z(9)doubting Thomas:
+ Q( J1 b- \; Q9 C) o. j& D: `这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)
7 ], c' G6 k# R5 @; F) L* ^, |(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)
+ P# n+ P' w& q* [9 B8 H(当名词用)
  `4 @' M7 R0 z例如:
+ g0 ^- W) F- \; pI am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.; R4 m& d5 d  d6 f( h2 [; V
(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)
# t& ?( J1 [0 a; m  m4 tThere must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.
; s# O+ R/ f( ^/ d/ o(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)' a7 U: J8 l* }+ X
也可用复数:% ~# H3 I$ Q) {' q2 H
My friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.6 _6 r7 @$ ^, B! n
(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。)  \9 z+ ?4 p7 D9 A7 l! N
If there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.. ^3 R7 Z/ m& D
(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。)/ ]1 f6 m2 Y" S  X
(10)dragon lady:
* `6 z: }. P4 g8 J! U) x" h指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)
% n5 M/ V/ h: u! b, i6 {( u例如:& w, b6 s" U7 q+ ~" i$ P: G+ n
The chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.
) ?: c; J! j: _; m! J! A, b1 J2 H(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)5 x. L% i/ t: k
I am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.
# c5 J8 e- p! ^9 N2 W- q(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)) N( i! K! L) A  h) Z
Should your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?

也可用复数:

注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
