谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语
- i. r2 V5 h* f& R) w  \
. h( \# L- x  E7 W: v9 ]9 c& M7 H' T% C# c* R! a1 `: `/ g
在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯  Y, y1 j+ x  ?$ k
之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。
7 w* a9 B' F! ?, r若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!5 }9 j6 f1 y0 I8 H1 |( E- z

7 V8 ?& _: A1 \8 ]. B(1) empty suit:2 B2 q' x! K* I- c& r8 o0 U, t$ N
指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。
2 b5 o3 I1 {9 k6 Z6 I4 F(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)
  l8 j* Z9 J4 O! n. m6 C$ d例如:
/ ?* I8 A6 A- u' L4 h/ ZAn empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.
. D9 z! I' |9 ^9 \7 ]' R(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)0 y* ]. d" Q0 @' T
Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.
. @3 C# A$ ~1 i: F* Z$ v9 Z3 [* ?(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)
# M- d; B4 j( i/ y- v虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:
5 Q: Q) p: m8 ?; iThe company is filled with a lot of empty suits.
0 F- @$ A0 m- V$ ^9 L5 j(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)5 d' b- h+ A# m
(2) fair-haired boy:
6 c, X; _. {; [) p* u1 {- Y/ y# S指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)
$ v7 R* {! _$ M(通常用单数,当名词用). h( w5 o+ B; S' J+ e7 g% F& I
例如:
, P6 `+ N  X/ D. `: s% aMr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.1 b1 d: U! D& }. ?* j2 d: L
( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)' p6 e! Q, f. @6 W) [# F
Not being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.
& t( Y8 w5 y; C" H- o+ h6 E! x  a(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)" p( J: ]' K0 g1 g
有时也可用复数:
4 J: w8 O( }8 aMr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.
, L$ F' E! B! L(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)
% V; }/ R. \7 L% [8 wFair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.
- k4 t6 c/ p1 q; ^: q(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)7 P$ t5 T0 o& x0 m
(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)
; f9 r& R) ~# H, T* [) `  r(3) fishing expedition:( |- F: o$ D4 H! Y
为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)0 H: q3 Q8 l3 o% P
(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)$ U7 B$ D% ]. c  z$ g. V
例如:
& X2 N9 `+ v7 l: YThe judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.
9 h' U0 D- ^, q& t(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)
4 ^( j3 U! \5 [9 H7 lThe police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.
% U5 j( P& r: C1 I9 T2 e(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)
4 t8 d. |  D+ m* }1 J) ?+ D2 s(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)$ g3 x3 E% F9 S: V
The reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.
% {* P( _3 Z0 k(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)
8 b2 Y$ u  \* T# o偶尔也有人用复数:" C, b+ V: S  F  }
Several fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office." e, ]* F3 L' ^& G) t
(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)
+ t  t3 o: r/ S2 g/ z- N7 d9 k(4) filthy rich:
4 u. O$ i7 V& J, |意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)3 r0 ~8 D& p' k6 v) m4 x. p* k6 [
(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)
2 o; V* _1 @; Y+ @0 I多半当形容词用。例如:7 f' ^  x) q; v5 M
With a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.; w9 a) S" s( c% q/ s" [- @! ?
( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)
  a; p$ t8 M: X. U) z* |1 SDespite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.; `. ?. c( P8 W* M. o. ^
(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)( J% j8 R+ D. {& \) b) K- i2 C
A filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.
# H; m2 D- E1 f# ~(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)
5 a5 G7 ~1 ^0 }% u- x; E' a$ \: IFilthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.% K+ A  _+ S0 Z8 p0 B
(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)4 l6 N# Z) l2 h" S" a
(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法)4 r6 Q6 v4 G% V' X9 c/ @# u
(5) fairy godmother:; `) V, Z3 f% c5 j" t% _
指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)
  y, ?$ ~% b" L9 i' G. o(多半指有钱的女人)6 s0 b0 N) j3 ~3 C2 b$ }
(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:, c) V1 [% T- C
Mr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.
' z# ]1 v( ^3 l2 ?0 l2 m8 @(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)
6 e5 d& j( \; L7 sAfter lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.$ x, j  {' n. r8 [; ]
(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)
/ D+ `' l* H: {4 P& d- z有时也用复数:, K  o% B9 |& C- n! b
Only business women can act as fairy godmothers.4 V6 |1 ~! _' b! x
(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)
$ x* ?5 @, l/ s, j; W: WIn Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.
( N  I" A* _' {" v) ](在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)  ]/ J7 e" [# ^5 D) s( r. h

1 j2 [% O' D! Z) z7 }+ L# @, d; H% ]3 l1 V# j! @
6)eye opener:
! [- B: f) C, @5 _8 X) j4 O4 {! A指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)( n) n# Z! J. Z/ g
(当名词用;通常只用单数)  H8 T1 K  D: d/ G4 f8 f9 d# q
例如:# s: c6 U# C& e6 v4 p  m
Your wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters., q% L- ]/ N0 @1 Q. Q
(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。), s7 ~7 t* ^, k8 C1 ^
Mr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.
& N; F# K' B! J" V: X(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)
, R2 n" ?" s( x6 ~The popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.( Z) b% T3 D2 a7 T/ m
(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)
- f3 g+ @* ^8 T8 f0 nSome American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.$ j) a0 D9 B3 n2 C
(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)3 l; J. i" e+ Z( m) L& i  y& y" T
(7) hot dog:5 X! g& D! c7 w! v. ^! ~8 ]
指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)4 V6 P/ s* O+ v, O/ |5 Q9 s4 x
例如:% A% f  e! V4 t# v
Some young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.
; q; H! Z3 t: U5 N  d(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。): W& D( I9 ~. h
(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)
- M+ r5 x" b* |% H. M- }In front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.$ [0 r) q4 D5 N7 l0 {; r- N0 r4 P- T2 j2 G! f
(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。). k6 E9 d8 C9 @/ U
(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)
6 ^% t% I) |2 `/ CDuring the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.
4 z, o- }" T# J( w(在空军表演时,一位飞行员做惊险的飞行动作。)

指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)9 X" p4 ?" f# |6 Z1 y9 T8 z; B
(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)) M8 O! ?  h% i7 |1 e* ~& K$ T
(当名词用,可指男女)" e. P6 k% E. g1 U) G; p
例如:
$ r: ~. M  {$ `John seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.
- G' u# {" ?9 m3 K(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)" L" y; _! x0 ~+ c; e
Being an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.2 C$ k( ~  n! g! Z1 H9 `* X* T0 x/ t
(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)2 `% S$ O3 [2 w; m
Does Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?
- m0 H. W8 s, w# e1 T& Z- n- J(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)
/ b  S; k! w2 s+ r+ nYou may find some eager beavers in any organizations.( w* z6 d; r: w5 j0 B
(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。)7 ~% S. j! n" o3 p+ Q5 g5 G) X+ B
(9)doubting Thomas:7 P# F5 I# J9 l
这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)
4 y" U. m0 d# v* K% [. H- Y(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)* }! ^; v$ \2 J. A2 H1 ~/ Y
(当名词用)7 r5 I/ n9 z! y; b6 O
例如:
7 c7 c8 P2 U$ ?# w" G7 {I am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.
( K+ V; m/ I. g* M* w% b4 i(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)" V7 a+ a# p1 H
There must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.
# C, K" P5 O1 X% C( j$ P. u(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)! M# v$ j, j2 N) t. |" i
也可用复数:
% b) n) ?# P3 K* ~My friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.
; k0 ]) }' q2 C+ @% o(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。)
: m1 V  t: [/ f! b8 GIf there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.
* b* m6 U8 b+ u( l( e. z- h(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。)/ `4 R/ n1 i. l9 R. h5 I- q
(10)dragon lady:
) b/ Z0 ^( M& c. a/ ^& P指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)  w; Q7 t/ K. y* ~/ A
例如:
( J% j% B0 ^7 V1 w1 h* I6 aThe chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.3 i% }( D/ I: u+ E# J9 U& V. \' r; B
(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)" I9 k, H/ D; H6 q, I4 i
I am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.
0 u) K+ \: n6 S+ L# M6 U(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。), w2 w" e8 m' A8 q- U
Should your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?
/ D( M0 D8 U( Q) R! O6 x, n& l8 r(假如你的女友成了凶恶的女人,你要与她分手吗?)8 r/ e! T; T1 k& t7 Y; y* @: E& `0 k9 j
也可用复数:
: C5 B' c0 a- l  k( Q' F+ |/ }There may be many dragon ladies in our community.
: Y7 c/ q" u" G9 w# s(在我们社区里也许有不少凶女人。)& d3 l( ]7 K" I
注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
