Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
; Q3 W! a7 g+ W8 t: D1 O" anot do any of the following:
' H1 c$ a0 X+ d4 i' d(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
8 u( p1 T2 u; A4 A0 ?9 E4 wvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
# }7 Y Q0 @3 r8 {0 t# L0 V(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
) l$ I5 }. b* Evehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
. _9 V" ?/ k" E7 ~3 O- f! d9 M% [(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,& U( T, l; s" V0 P) `* S
permit another person! c) P+ \$ m& c
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or+ _9 a2 G" }# p: k) m o/ p
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
( U8 x" _2 o% H7 s7 L, r ^unless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
' m3 H3 U- F& w0 b(d) give or lend a financial3 ~& M0 d2 b% r( |8 N3 R* W+ C4 q$ z
responsibility card or a copy of it
+ O9 U9 A0 [# R* p* _; w rto a person not entitled to have that financial
) d; H4 o0 P# |, C, \responsibility card or copy.
+ @9 o7 @) g# h& u% |5 a(1.1)% `. l: L3 e! F; z2 l3 `
If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
8 u0 o' s1 l1 Cwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of+ l$ A {% \$ i: Q2 l5 |
the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
& p# U0 e- }0 @' P4 P(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
7 F4 @3 W% A; O# vnot an insured motor vehicle.
) G9 p* ]8 k. K+ G(2)( A6 @8 n8 P- w& G
If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
' E1 L. _ f5 S" `5 m& ^, eAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this+ k/ O7 o2 ]" i
section.: O4 F6 F( g* G& O, o, [4 [8 K! l8 [
(3)8 p( {" V H) U: T& o( `% W- X( _4 B
Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
6 V! q( Y [4 r. _( ifinancial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
, g: R2 e; A. VInsurance Act
/ r* z B" K0 d* _by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
/ D! B# [9 k+ m, K! {outside Alberta.
. i/ ], q: j# V+ T# O9 o5 y, ](4)
8 ^( Z: h( J) w4 ?A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection
2 ~$ V7 A! A$ r5 e0 J7 B6 ^6 j: J' A(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable," d$ A' }+ V% [ o4 z. i
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $25009 n; B V% a) {# e
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
3 Z. E9 [5 E/ k/ I9 x2 ?imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not# _- @6 Z: Z! z
more than 6 months
. t [8 h8 a N% T' n p, NMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
