Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall# c. {/ s6 d. a) W! A
not do any of the following:
. P0 d" H( r3 `' |5 h) D: u(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor* j% k) K. [ s ]+ J. S; n7 T
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
5 l9 ^# d5 W5 k/ H3 [) x(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
0 N1 U) A2 i" ?" V' Y( L0 A; nvehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
* G. d/ v! }8 B. @' |( T1 ~; X(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
( {0 G: w$ u$ ?9 ]permit another person7 T) q( x; H0 B5 e, |/ I6 Q6 k$ _4 ]
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or3 ?; z; m4 u" H0 S7 l6 a/ M$ E
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
* L9 }" ]% q3 Dunless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;* ]5 t! q/ h* Z6 F/ u; H9 M4 J
(d) give or lend a financial
w1 F O6 q8 ^" }' Fresponsibility card or a copy of it
& ?/ n' F7 F S4 j, T" V1 sto a person not entitled to have that financial! @# s9 u: _. P4 B+ z5 o! {- U* W( p
responsibility card or copy.
" W ^: b$ o8 Q' d' l$ ^7 a(1.1)) O. u7 K- s+ T9 d0 {
If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
6 U" ]& V( S/ M3 }& o4 i- C8 _without the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
7 F+ b! `! @9 B, vthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
& r* Q1 u( s" ~: i(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is' v \+ j1 [# P1 z
not an insured motor vehicle.

If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
' A* x+ Y" e! ^Act, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this: i$ _9 n; r' G- Y
section.* n( y/ ~, K5 Y& d2 V/ z$ q
(3)5 \3 U7 B7 v4 J; K9 ~7 v% Y; c
Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
! Y# ?0 t2 G6 C4 m5 dfinancial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the% [$ z2 V* Y. y; ~+ R" `, \
Insurance Act
/ r/ D+ ~8 Z: o- O# b8 @' ?by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
; R8 _( @0 g- _& h, E( @outside Alberta.
1 n" D U( L9 Y; d$ M! N(4)& Q) S$ }! v" C5 Q+ o& P
A person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection, a6 N+ w6 H F v6 s/ u& Q
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,# F; Z3 A* B" D7 V) H w
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500' a/ }/ c: B* R9 N" g G
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to
& u" S! p: d ] O2 ximprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
. g% R, E- z$ ^9 b% k, Ymore than 6 months
' r2 L& o# H7 x# j9 Y
4 o0 H3 Q: D. _2 [5 kMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
