You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,; N) k; R2 f; c/ ~

9 k2 [) {& C& M) DI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
9 X# C; b: W, c/ T( W8 Y; e( n
9 n# [4 _* s8 G! Q# h" Q4 KHis name was Kyle.
6 l0 U9 h' f5 P. |0 i  i) g
! A7 p  d1 {# V/ QIt looked like he was carrying all of his2 q% Y' g# e; `5 _# x' A
Books.) p, ?/ F: y4 q$ R

' u$ i; Z$ u. C% S  p3 j1 z6 pI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
; r& Q4 V: X8 W: l5 o+ B. {3 m
* o# L: A6 z1 H% n7 P# GHe must really be a nerd."
) p- U! C% y- ?! H: D* w- e% {8 K5 W; L2 Z  f( _
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
) N6 ~6 j( F& c  g. ]: w, `- {$ l6 }, K
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.* b1 g8 }$ o9 b% R8 p% Q

- x, \5 k9 O! e  p3 rThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
; |& {- \/ h0 E8 R1 ?% D( t; y8 h; |* D, J$ E: `* I1 i$ J" G( m. N
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
  k6 y& |8 w1 l' d- F3 p+ u' C  N8 X' Q# {3 `) J
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes) h0 j) W( f4 K* A% F. u) u
5 z" `% l$ v) J
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
3 W5 c- |) l# n! [  W2 H& V( H/ U8 e/ d  g' X; D% k
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
& _( k, h7 ?6 Y6 r" l: l) w
- X) h7 c( z5 EThey really should get lives.. ]3 z6 V- l7 y7 W+ {4 a
! j& I7 V# n9 X7 P6 N
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!". ~; Z" L' C  T$ }' l
6 m1 `/ q) D( |/ H% b/ M
There was a big smile on his face.9 X- r# z9 h* N' M, m" C( Z* c) S
0 r7 x% n/ Q; W. C# C; {
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.$ f; @# ^$ Y8 s3 j5 _" u

; r5 i, v4 t0 JI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
+ z2 y% I9 L5 K; i) V* \
+ D1 v- ~. \3 r- C; C. XAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
9 Z. b& }; O3 Y( }- M; G: }: r* ~$ F
$ o/ r  D1 ^# c& D, o$ iHe said he had gone to private school before now.
6 a: z4 M/ M, C/ k; ^. k
$ m$ \2 g: t; H$ ZI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
. E# P+ Y; X1 q- `9 f/ p# I
, Z3 k& o$ ~% t+ Q. t* u( ?  k; TWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
3 ?3 f$ ^: _) Z, ^
6 |. v7 N; \3 |. C, d( w/ pHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.2 z+ {9 n5 N! z: d, F3 S3 @

; N- E) Y- R! [. J" F9 bI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.& X9 G; E$ B5 O: B
. j2 K" C- r& y! h
He said yes.
$ B% L# \8 a2 X. ~: j8 S0 l$ D0 [3 |8 c* \2 W. H3 g" w+ r
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
5 L  L9 w: N. ?+ L/ B; {
. V( v7 m' }5 P, |5 ]: d% A  u5 bMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.0 ?( @# h$ f- L" i5 o- k
4 D4 a% D& i! ^' a1 n  ?
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!- l/ @6 V  l& _5 I' s
) K9 L$ ^. e9 f5 Y. l  Q/ X- C! m# k; s
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
/ M2 o( h0 ]% T/ R* M! Z/ d
" G5 m$ o# e9 h7 k+ i2 L% I# m1 |, AOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
* L+ `. [& `. |. E0 ]
4 l& D2 l$ k9 G" k) ?1 ZWhen we were seniors, we began to think
& @) j* Q( U) i4 N- NAbout college.
, ?5 P9 n7 |1 C) d/ o( Y2 f
5 V3 Q$ D7 i; j, c3 p( g' DKyle decided on Georgetown, and I6 K' m, z4 A/ s9 F. }, p
Was going to Duke." p! m" z5 h: `! D7 M1 @3 J

1 W$ J9 x' |1 V  f/ `5 U5 zI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
! M* f- O" U8 E% m" k$ o
  K& a3 x; w; p+ a3 o. tHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.  g( g. ?  j% o  S

" s5 M9 e9 U  B) @2 P. nKyle was valedictorian of our class.
1 a' M" v5 J; ^7 I% u: `2 Z5 X' A
/ t. O% M4 K- V, P- [) T  `I teased him all the time about being a nerd.
+ {3 B* g0 D* I5 Q
& h: K, n' ]9 u- N1 j4 FHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.
. N' Y0 U, X4 u" l* @5 m9 I3 H* l+ _6 ?+ t( W" \0 ^) v, U
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
) R  X8 L* u4 R2 \+ s
) S4 x4 b2 F# M0 }8 BGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
( o. _8 l! e$ q. K/ r, `% i- `8 A" K: c/ W0 v. I
He looked great.
' x6 e+ k7 b8 t  h3 k) r6 k9 K0 ?, J4 ?: m( R) t% e
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.$ C! a4 z# A! g0 c# J) j8 [

7 {6 l. k7 F9 X% NHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
0 ?$ K+ w* T3 I) c' V0 |! h$ n6 Z+ R3 Y2 u4 b
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
" Q1 G+ k6 M% o2 [3 _  G- I$ _0 _6 I. p/ }! ~
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
# ~7 S6 e4 s6 i6 v7 p- Z+ B1 b" T9 t1 f7 i* u% L1 b* \
Today was one of those days.4 p1 o; q/ A" {+ Y4 S. Q

- A5 j( ]9 M1 d* e1 a" jI could see that he was nervous about his speech.* E3 U4 P' T- ^; G* M
& \' C* c, ?' ?/ i( U  \
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
) D/ b7 c& j: u9 n% S4 N* g+ n6 {
7 n  c1 l: n9 g" d# CHe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.. A* ]5 X: G) O' j/ y7 {

( N' `% r& ~+ Y  [9 d# a7 s" s"Thanks," he said.
& q' K& E' F% s* C$ B+ b. C7 J$ F2 J7 `
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
2 \+ t- j! ~% C7 }5 O2 E6 c* g7 J) H
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.7 \( K; Q+ m( l1 [) k% N  L( X

4 ?5 u4 Z: b9 F* tYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
" h  c& q  X$ m# J  p
+ x5 x4 a! Q' l& dI am here to tell all of you that being a
" Y  s- B0 q9 _% T) y& y7 P" FFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.: Z8 \) o# l9 z
+ r7 ?2 G0 E" p. z) Q
I am going to tell you a story."" {9 N1 \4 T, e- ~8 \

/ S5 m, Y( K& I, }4 a  O" EI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
: W* U$ H* W# U9 E& ^( G
: A8 x1 T3 J/ l6 \He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
* s  X1 H7 r" t: F' i/ T4 j' L. }# E0 V$ Z  @  C
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
& [1 d( o8 O$ T( C  [4 o! V. X/ i& a
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
& O2 K+ I0 ?( B, C
5 R* |8 v8 p0 h' s2 i$ M  _"Thankfully, I was saved.
, u0 l7 ^3 x3 C6 f8 T/ D# ~: H# e1 K+ v; n! W5 H, J4 n
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."7 n' r8 J( K  d' i

( }- Z7 E+ j! E2 K" t3 N$ p5 }* kI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
" a1 p; d9 N( a6 N; q# I5 _0 C( F, ^2 W2 U6 ^
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile., |5 c, l" V" U  p/ F
) U  }' K$ A2 C
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth., s& E" x7 n  t$ n" l
5 \) F6 |, _0 m6 V8 v* j: R
Never underestimate the power of your actions.
$ c% r- {) G4 C  |' j) k4 z9 [  K
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.( n5 b! ~* t0 D; q4 z
. k! S# |' R* i2 y
For better or for worse./ c$ n+ j# s; Q0 r: S1 U
+ q" }8 b4 T4 X1 d2 n
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
: ^8 G' R6 S8 C* h: m+ ?) s! [0 S8 z% A' Z! d" b( s6 _
Look for God in others.' V8 f1 @: v9 ?& Z6 [7 W
3 D& ?% I  e0 D. |
You now have two choices, you can:
# O+ i% N+ d6 G, ]" r! K& H8 z4 L7 }, G6 C  Y- ?  B: k3 b3 H
1) Pass this on to your friends or
2 d1 g) n1 r9 I
* [1 U1 b  P9 D* p3 P2 g& t4 s2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
( s7 C6 V! A9 V  ^7 |2 t& x' }) E( ]6 {1 D0 q! F
As you can see, I took choice number 1.
8 x4 |( N7 z  K, @  {0 j"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
. Q. K6 S! F/ A' k. e, N& y3 F8 G- i3 g
There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.
; l/ b! c" c  h2 r' w& h  d; p) K8 a7 Y% Q; G
Tomorrow is mystery.

' l9 i# I* X) F2 t8 m9 o4 Q4 tToday is a gift.
