You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
& S  g" W# Q$ [9 J; L9 C3 D" ^4 ]  z1 d
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.% `+ F& v4 @4 X3 j# y
- x9 j- }& a2 h: g1 c9 R
His name was Kyle.. k: u* t: s9 s, c9 S" \2 I! X: L( ]1 k
, q1 z* [8 D) y: Y0 {4 [
It looked like he was carrying all of his
. I: c) W7 B, F+ U" c7 r8 ]6 |3 tBooks.0 [9 V0 k+ F( G! ~2 V+ q6 w+ R/ S

8 b/ L4 V, \# ~2 lI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
/ I0 b5 Q! l' Q3 u2 f: T( j, [' Z6 s- h5 {0 H/ H
He must really be a nerd."$ M  _0 r( L+ `9 X
& a! Y9 ]" H4 H( ~2 Y& N! b
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.0 @+ J3 h  v) V" t
# u. ?% b/ X- q4 R9 \
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.; a) D: w: M- i% [% v( E
9 l# a9 ]) N! D: G9 s5 S: F
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
. x8 R( }( f) y2 Y5 S7 U; m1 z2 G0 c2 ?* |6 m$ D# D# o! Q
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.& X7 V3 S& D1 X: J( n' \
. U8 E$ M  G* _* D
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes: E  ]  d% j* |4 k5 ~! x7 ]
4 {1 F  R4 C, O- @1 E( Y' O/ a
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
' x: [( k4 w- Q9 x
. O8 ]' l  N+ X( e! V7 P+ N9 dAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.( I* q7 n& o$ ^5 O1 H# b1 g6 a: n2 i

2 ?- _$ f6 i% }* hThey really should get lives.
) i5 l6 R% t( R+ n" z3 a0 p& }# h2 Q5 J9 w- P' Q$ j
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
8 i  z+ r( x/ v( C; H6 _! @: F2 d  m# g9 P/ H$ L" g$ {5 [  |- |
There was a big smile on his face.+ t! \$ T1 f# C& r- ^. Q

3 V7 z, M8 U3 ^1 b) J* c1 }$ [It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.9 x3 N7 X' B- |/ m2 T# r
( Z4 @5 S' \- n. T. c/ Z
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.+ U8 Z) D, Y; |& c+ r( C
* m! p+ B2 p8 i0 m+ _! k$ P' n9 E
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.4 ~$ G# g5 [5 H
$ m! K9 K$ f1 W; O% h
He said he had gone to private school before now.- `3 ~2 y3 k) ?. [1 d, S

$ Z0 l' N0 P! N; r) e6 A' }0 O5 S) _I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
* H  g! S3 N# |' i3 W. @% j1 V) F" I* U. `1 |' f
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
: Q: b9 f' r( ^# G6 u' j& q, S; j8 D  w: n% {; ^7 _; b
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
' ^9 U: x1 M6 _7 i" R! v4 G; K" X+ C% T( x0 r
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
$ i3 @' h: _' p& M& z5 V) x) Z6 t* ?6 @
He said yes.
4 T* ?+ I( B0 D+ i( M$ G  b" |7 U( U8 i9 \- P0 j
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
( G/ y# A, G3 W  y" E* g* V
6 H0 C% I& d$ C, [% yMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
- h: M& J  _2 o( h! }7 H; I, P1 Q  X( t
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!6 t. c: ?  h: t) _0 W- J

( ]) |; c) B% Q) k9 }$ r" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
2 E# z% r! P, I- Z" c% V# O1 K) _0 C! m: \
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.  p6 Q' g3 z5 _# d( ^$ I* E* q
0 p* Z% D" [% e# E2 H$ N
When we were seniors, we began to think
/ P3 q  i$ o& Y( F  OAbout college.
# b+ J7 A% r  ?, ?5 o
* ]: Q2 t3 ?, \Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I; f' ^6 q) X: P- C9 V5 Q
Was going to Duke.4 u- C6 z" p% \/ K

1 C# B2 L5 z! l) u5 J5 C, UI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
5 A. W0 O  _9 z, `) B$ m' g1 X- O( f7 w
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.: c  W! o8 m7 |

" W8 A, z: U& v( MKyle was valedictorian of our class.7 d" q+ c2 Z3 w' V( f6 o% S1 b
# ~) a" N5 l4 ]
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.! ?' {. K. D. T5 a3 ?5 {( t1 u; ~

8 Z& \& M5 p" [9 j& s* C- GHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.
2 j' h! C3 n6 z0 O
/ {! y# j, ?, m2 w4 |5 pI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
2 w% B9 ?/ G" a, [$ Y3 p% J- a: y7 _" D
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.
' [& _& N' P- k3 H
. }7 r" y4 r5 Z+ K' ZHe looked great.1 l  z7 ]9 S8 S# }! v+ A
, F' J7 f' n( g( v" S- c. }
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.7 a4 a4 `% n# E& G

+ s( }! @( x6 w3 KHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
) f1 h; G9 X- ]4 b  u
: [# f" V0 X0 i4 J# y$ M8 e% K; lHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
/ u5 g+ O8 y8 E1 U5 m4 o- [8 @9 j* Z. z2 K. C# M# \; f* H
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
, {) n$ g1 p7 K6 N
8 p+ v! s* B9 O* q/ qToday was one of those days.4 r) j0 v1 `: V7 C& X+ q

) n; J" e* [3 `( v/ L  @' g" ]I could see that he was nervous about his speech.6 J2 V$ U* k2 o+ B6 r1 _2 Q! D- _7 }" n

) w5 j+ K, y$ [- d/ vSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
( B% {- s* R/ g+ q  D) }
! H- S% n7 P) w* |" @He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
% B' X# d/ V6 |1 n/ L9 L' W: n/ l! p6 h9 @/ \' X9 w; `
"Thanks," he said.
: H0 z7 Y; L8 j5 c. @0 I8 j" |% Z" Y) f7 ?
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
% _& W+ i' V" S! T" W# K9 W8 i( i) |. D( T
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
9 M& l1 x, Z7 u5 w+ k% P3 l) r9 E, {+ B
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
7 ?2 x0 P6 _2 q' D8 f4 o: j& P; g" U, e+ K/ ~1 |
I am here to tell all of you that being a, J* g3 @) H* z7 `$ m5 a
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.9 F2 c& e# V; N  [; |

1 R" c- p/ p4 [  b  [I am going to tell you a story."! k6 Z8 o3 X: Y+ U( ^1 Z
" j7 e9 k4 V9 J: z/ H
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.8 x) w/ g0 j; B9 n
- w" g9 f" b0 G0 S1 |- A
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
; p! n4 i4 A/ Y% r  U$ C
, N7 l6 h. i$ N5 xHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
8 r6 a* h; ]( V# M$ u) p/ `$ ?3 R3 z) d
" Z* Z: u) H8 s2 }( b4 YHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
7 _5 s# [( G5 I2 z! s% F% ]
0 q/ ?0 e( B# E9 s; `4 g"Thankfully, I was saved.0 b% A2 w( }) |! ]
) @6 p4 l9 ^, s! r) M& f
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
1 m/ o1 h$ n. O8 T8 @+ C# N( ?9 {, n0 x, B- b* o+ I1 E( x) \
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.! ?9 }: f# ]9 U! S

0 Q. r! i- M) iI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.1 _4 F6 f" d3 y: H# l6 B& v; O9 b
7 T: ^) r; \5 i8 t* Y
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.
3 L2 k6 z; F, J. t9 |& @8 p7 Y6 w1 Q- w% i7 D/ H$ M6 |) y% Q
Never underestimate the power of your actions.
: L* K7 e' z( i% n7 C7 ?; W9 x* v* e7 W, Z4 X! T; n2 i6 i
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.5 u% M1 ?4 [9 r1 S+ L
: r3 u$ q* u1 c- u
For better or for worse.) |# y" b/ Q1 i0 ~4 p
1 e$ f/ s! o8 W# X7 u/ `
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.& e$ _& E/ j6 K7 V5 A* @6 N

6 h" t5 e  K1 {  @Look for God in others.# Y$ y; ?3 t9 Z1 O
# a$ G6 v. l( P3 h
You now have two choices, you can:+ i7 r, W+ K, K+ {  W, A; q

2 q& z! ]: c, r- S- n6 h+ q1) Pass this on to your friends or
0 ?$ _/ x+ g& [& U$ F
8 f, a( e1 d& z" o* e* e2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.5 O6 _( @/ a$ a' f
& s! I; o( L/ D4 \' }+ I: D+ ~
As you can see, I took choice number 1.+ X# B( D7 p1 ^
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
$ f( c4 b9 r" C% N3 l) u8 h+ o8 c5 ?: }! u+ E3 R+ }: v4 X0 Q" B3 v
There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.0 z" G; g$ U6 J0 l4 T# c' Q
; q: R, a( G- {! v
Tomorrow is mystery.

3 h7 ?, R! A! R& ]+ t$ q0 B0 tToday is a gift.( r& s4 Q7 a, s+ m9 S0 m6 q
