You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
( N; T7 Z% j4 k8 K' ~. g  x- F/ T% _! G$ O0 d
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school." `! k- B  D7 x

, o4 f, k( {/ J, k. y. v+ r) t2 ^His name was Kyle.  k* N: P" x0 k7 j
9 e1 ?9 t, N  ~
It looked like he was carrying all of his# w( r' w( O8 ]: R+ K1 U
Books.
7 R  J' E  t' Q1 f9 _1 }
; }* l) o8 o) l* Y1 K& {4 iI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?0 t2 r) c' R1 M0 y/ V5 m! G$ W

, a% ?& ^" V9 A; B! H+ g/ \3 R2 }0 uHe must really be a nerd."
  v  x4 K# E; W6 U9 T/ n' Z# G+ c. O) }$ P" R
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
8 a8 h3 c1 A) H% Q4 M
( Y( K$ ~) A* ?As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.2 Q* ]) g/ p8 p/ v7 U0 I
, f. N5 C$ w! y1 |
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
; Y) o% _* c" Q7 @# k- o) c
5 y4 u' p3 W+ ~9 ~8 uHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
* I4 z7 B3 l' k5 w; j4 c3 u
' k" f: }+ p2 F- Z( L7 l8 zHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes8 V3 T" [& {+ l) |& n

2 e$ U+ k: `! K$ S3 CMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.) E! ~+ M5 `) m. V

' |* F9 X/ L, u+ hAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.# e: O8 c9 o; [9 I' R8 H
, W& o, _! T  b
They really should get lives.  O) v  b7 Z" }8 y) w

/ b9 A: r3 q5 R" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!". c) F, H1 o5 b) X2 U! R1 ~

- u3 t- o, J7 D. u- a# {There was a big smile on his face.
4 m, Z8 ?# b, _* f0 W; a; V8 U) B; J! i  m; ~  E/ d
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.) i. g6 V9 o, c) u. R2 G
) |; c4 ~- T2 d/ D! C- }
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.! S! ?9 C, ~& ~6 \# M
" w, ^4 u5 L3 B& }
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
) z  B; h; K: T# s" D( b/ k" C
# }. W6 R" \! X; ?; vHe said he had gone to private school before now.; F! Q' ^3 `2 h1 ], `% O1 n

9 K( H+ m5 K6 B, s4 A8 `/ l) s, UI would have never hung out with a private school kid before.$ ~- B$ N- @* [6 S6 Z& C  _( c& E. n

! ^, r5 e3 g5 }& IWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.( h+ _& f8 Q8 d* T% c+ M  Z5 @

; f: K$ g- x1 r, {) y5 vHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid." E( x% x% N  w
) Q8 L, b3 k. ^' h' P0 \/ \
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
2 t! N0 V' H: j1 C; Z- S( n
9 f4 i4 i. J" B0 O. J  i4 DHe said yes., N* b; n2 ^- {
/ E8 k$ m3 s+ @& M& A0 G4 [
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.: ~( p3 w! c9 @" T% N% S
& o- e. m( X# T
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
$ V& a- U" }7 F2 S9 `1 e" R+ d2 l6 W* M
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
" x# Q# a3 S- r6 o0 P! Y. |
; g2 y5 E/ E# Y/ B( S" He just laughed and handed me half the books.( p3 K. v. l1 Q# P8 S4 F0 o. j

) u0 [3 q) r2 Z. u$ `" m% O' hOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.7 a& y* R5 |3 }. A+ N4 i$ ?) ~
7 b( K6 [7 n; ^0 J% z2 |
When we were seniors, we began to think
3 y  P( p: k: @; Y& UAbout college.
3 I  b. n; |7 N% f5 a( {( B+ ]0 ~4 r9 ~6 o
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I8 C, ^: }2 v6 ^. C# t, }6 m1 U
Was going to Duke.0 \9 G8 |. q% f5 K$ j0 g0 ]

. E5 S' L* Q1 A$ S5 vI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.6 a# p/ ?: _* {" O& B: s
9 C3 U3 C9 r3 a. B& M# ?
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.# C( f1 C# t  y

+ I" w7 Q0 y# `' z; h3 mKyle was valedictorian of our class.* i( f9 T! _- j9 \3 X; s9 J8 W, B
3 s5 j5 w4 O" ]2 f; M6 g$ @4 s9 ?
I teased him all the time about being a nerd., h/ e9 U% Y' ]( T! x% t

( S+ ]8 E3 z9 Q3 g2 T5 m! B* k  HHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.$ L) x3 T' s: S& R
+ `  g! y' }; ]' ?4 A
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak, s& o- s, _# {, ?. j) J- D. H9 R
* _) f, X! E1 v% t
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.; K$ x6 [, A: D4 V
6 V: f( s# w0 z) D
He looked great.
0 s- z( z1 E* V3 [, f
( q/ _1 G. b7 ]4 t9 v  U  DHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
" j" g3 S5 r. h
" V, a% {; P' F( S) T7 k% Y$ Z. {4 iHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.  m9 a7 [3 W/ X3 T$ Q. x9 [( m
4 n2 F" t. m4 ~# |- ~
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
- J) m# f: u; H2 {, ~1 y; T+ [% ]2 l$ k5 i* ?
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
% j- i; y& Y( e1 ?, l
  p8 N0 ]. `$ G9 y$ T& s  T4 T6 V# ?! SToday was one of those days.* i8 B0 N8 n8 E' l* E) j
3 G( v2 {2 D. i' M
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.
  |' w0 k; p* i  D$ B" r  H5 `2 t" q$ \0 ^# d
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
: W9 x% b) D' C* t- X4 A- _: F0 L  C
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.2 P* l; }# o9 a( f* p$ @4 G

' \1 h2 h# `9 Y: y"Thanks," he said.
, ?) l& I9 N2 E. z; O  W
' m9 Y) N4 j! E) C4 P$ JAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
% c% e  S" {6 T# Y: b, Q1 Z+ H) A
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.7 I+ ]# {9 J2 f; @& u/ K
  E/ Z7 E9 H5 _- e+ N$ C+ j
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends.../ e0 E" C3 d/ v$ b5 b& h/ [
. `$ U- k/ E( s
I am here to tell all of you that being a
3 i% v7 _% ?: z# Z, A! iFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.3 q- h3 q8 l$ p0 t/ o  r

6 `% x  \6 \, n; Y8 R% }0 cI am going to tell you a story."4 l  F3 u1 n$ K9 a7 Y+ k

. C- ~+ Q/ \, {2 QI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
; w- G' P1 a0 X$ d& ^+ c; q
1 l5 n  i5 x9 M% x- b0 GHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
$ A" D8 Z+ k' }9 _& G7 C! L$ K+ ?4 E1 u3 J
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.; t" |$ z( z, D! ]' }% m
4 p0 m1 L! O9 i" @: B
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
' I% a* ~7 y& ^/ g. j8 h9 ?! U& o. @  O- g& M; v4 [+ i
"Thankfully, I was saved.
$ I: z- m7 O/ |& X6 T: c/ |8 L
" F( U  M8 X3 u9 q' ^My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
$ {  {  ^: k; d# l9 y& n4 T
) p6 S; k6 \+ Q! Z1 e& M! l- uI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.  ?5 I$ h7 B& _0 `1 h

- ~9 N1 ^1 `' k  c+ @% P3 fI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.- e2 d4 R# U* y4 K; n; j) ]
- m  W/ r$ d8 _! q9 F
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.
/ \8 B& |( d1 B, Q) i
8 E& O$ B3 {: h" sNever underestimate the power of your actions.
! J) Q/ w2 |+ {# n  y
$ I& q5 w4 `: U# n2 Z4 Q7 }With one small gesture you can change a person's life.
. H/ o$ {  c# d  P% R
' G/ {/ [: ^  _4 P0 L! `1 m7 QFor better or for worse.
& f1 \: }- f9 v; u) l( A' X3 W/ `3 |& K  \& I, L
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.. G/ o7 A8 j$ q# l( F0 p) e
# r4 {" I( g) f# F, w
Look for God in others.

  U8 @( w+ T, {5 z) I: S2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.

' g3 x+ F5 x- f/ tAs you can see, I took choice number 1.
% W# n2 |$ v- C) Y"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."+ v% r: A; k- \: J

3 _: {0 r" h3 V4 p* ^0 L: }% Z1 z2 N0 }There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.1 f, s. X2 A4 n6 E4 x2 F4 I
% b& S7 y  Z& H) ~& ]
Tomorrow is mystery.
. P- ~- V2 \4 x! ]
  j; B4 y1 u* Y( vToday is a gift.
