Edmonton's population grows by 30,000

EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.3 w R$ z! Q+ I6 W) k
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
$ G, l4 y c f6 Q1 o6 i. IThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.( W( l4 f2 J1 D- l0 i1 [
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.+ n, c1 u' E5 ]. Z* M9 y
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. . @3 k# ]+ s- w# k( V
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.! c$ o7 E- _' ]5 S, E) @2 N
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
