Changes to health care premiums January 1, 2009

There are no changes in the way Albertans register for publicly-funded health care. However, as announced in the 2008 budget, health premiums have been eliminated as of January 1, 2009.

) J/ h$ u( k8 l/ |' I( lPayment and collection of health care premiums owed prior to January 1, 2009 will continue under these guidelines:( w" k! J# l* q4 Z( O

1. All Albertans are responsible to pay premiums unless they qualify for premium assistance, government-sponsored income support programs, or are senior citizens.
5 l& ]" `; u6 k5 x; D6 R" ^ 2. Employers and benefit administrators who register and pay premiums on behalf of their employees will continue to do so.
6 h$ w$ X* Z3 A1 O 3. Alberta Health and Wellness will continue to pursue collections from those who fail to pay premiums.: n* Y; `! k' \) K1 r
4. Contributors to Alberta Blue Cross or other supplementary insurance plans that provide prescription drug, dental, and other extended coverage, will still pay those premiums, as they have not been eliminated.
