8 k% k) Q1 Y' B2 QEDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.

Edmonton's cooling market showed the biggest year-over-year drop of any Canadian city.

"Markets in these cities continue to adjust after experiencing record price increases in the last two and a half years," the federal agency said.

8 b7 _" j$ ^: rEven heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency said.

5 I5 y4 a) W5 U7 TThe fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.

As the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month.. r" s: L+ E* B; U
% V, y( n, V) O5 m+ jPrices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July.( ~' l6 t0 g5 k8 B9 `4 ^: e1 @) l

"The growth rate of the index has been on a downward trend since September 2006," the agency said.
