> What would you do?....you make the choice. Don't look for a punch line,
( d$ m; o  b2 r, i& C) Q> there isn't one. Read it anyway. My question is: Would you have made the
/ L* e& W4 N% m( O5 M: @> same choice?/ u1 i9 R! ~: q8 R
>! R2 D7 H4 F/ \0 x/ r
> At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning-disabled children," ?$ m3 {# B! I; {
> the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be
0 \8 n7 l: q, E* T+ ^% c> forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated
8 Y* N1 ]" u: H  Y0 i> staff, he offered a question:/ y. p3 w$ g& `  S  ^
>3 v/ m: b! j' Z5 k
> 'When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is: D4 T( E: {. P  x
> done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other
" u' R% L  G: A( h6 T! X> children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the$ L2 C! X$ I( e7 L8 O4 T3 m( l% r
> natural order of things in my son?'+ |/ W) m9 h4 h4 Z

> The audience was stilled by the query.% ]" @/ }2 B% L* ~' [

> The father continued. 'I believe that when a child like Shay, physically
6 z+ ?* Z6 T7 A% a> and mentally handicapped comes into the world, an opportunity to realize
7 H- E* r/ D2 W( ^$ H0 D> true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people
3 s- d1 i/ l) W. m1 V4 G% b> treat that child.') O) u% j+ _5 I2 F5 U

8 P' Z) U5 d% O, n; N- e2 D> Then he told the following story:. E% ]* s& z2 ]- a, Z/ J  c

> Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were0 E0 V, m) O# |
> playing baseball. Shay asked, 'Do you think they'll let me play?' Shay's) S& ]; q- N2 J0 h
> father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their' J/ t+ ~1 \: E8 k0 h0 t$ }' Z' P7 {
> team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play,
7 S2 c: `. W* e* ]- P> it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be3 N$ z3 B. m. y! C" x0 u" I  n
> accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.- x4 w5 |1 Q( {/ E5 u2 ^

> Shay's father approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not

> said, 'We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I5 b- F  B$ L2 V2 q6 m, _5 S
> guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth

9 V3 a  t" X6 b- @  o> Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a$ w" {/ J) r6 e
> team shirt. His Father watched with a small tear in his eye and warmth in
. S9 P4 G% x- D8 w: O3 k> his heart. The boys saw the father's joy at his son being accepted. In the& E4 A7 f, x, B
> bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still
- h; k) i7 ]9 g! Z8 }2 w> behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and
) Z9 F0 M/ ?+ e, I. f) e> played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was
, w2 _) N! q$ o- ^> obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from) i- q0 D/ P( J7 [: |4 C. R) z
> ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands. In the bottom of the% V5 k0 @- k; m0 d
> ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases
! c( n! ~, }0 V> loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be5 Q, B0 N9 o: P( L8 g$ x
> next at bat.9 E& f+ j* ^! k
>% [- Q: N+ t. @- p1 l1 ~: ?: @% L
> At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the4 E9 P/ ]* B% d, V5 K+ E) |5 R- @. X
> game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat Everyone knew that a hit was all" T3 z5 f$ c1 l9 y4 ], d
> but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly,' ^7 P# D9 X( t# F6 ?& Q/ v: V( C: S
> much less connect with the ball.$ s/ D. H+ L' B6 a, N1 K6 @
> However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the  |% |3 q2 Y+ f
> other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved/ r% F: G6 A3 A0 a* _2 `
> in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make1 x  j& \2 O& U6 v
> contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The: A8 N0 V3 L5 I0 z
> pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay.
! c8 X" I+ H0 n4 L6 S7 \8 v> As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball3 B4 ~" s' v  r# i
> right back to the pitcher./ l1 c" [, G" X7 M! K

6 V2 v% D0 C0 ^$ ^1 \& }> The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and: U% [% }' O: T: W% \
> could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been: B* P* L" K" ]! m. h
> out and that would have been the end of the game.

. k6 L$ l0 \, {& ?> Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out
! F" S: i! X# }> of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started
9 e: Y. I$ ]4 `: y1 i* M5 x7 r> yelling, 'Shay, run to first! Run to first!' Never in his life had Shay ever
( O! U% J- d6 z  m3 M9 s& D7 g> run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline,
8 T0 [1 C2 s# ]3 n7 ?, D' e> wide-eyed and startled.
$ S, @" E1 r$ T& J6 ?. i, l>
. O( X$ q: n* G' m1 Y7 W( h> Everyone yelled, 'Run to second, run to second!' Catching his breath, Shay
! {  j. V; t7 r' }/ R0 c5 h' u3 q* f> awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the5 ]" t; A" [; W4 R: H0 |$ q" K( F
> base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had5 A9 T5 E! W2 S4 c" I
> the ball ... The smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to; X) H$ \3 }. O+ L2 [3 @! v
> be the hero for his team. He could have thrown the ball to the5 {+ \* ^: T: J4 t, m) T2 M+ l' H
> second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intention So he,
$ \2 l; j: F; t/ U> too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's
3 c- [2 L6 g( b0 x' T> head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him3 H) v- [& _2 a' }+ y; v3 Y! h
> circled the bases toward home.
& s% t. l8 ?+ n/ M% q% ^>0 C  ~" M1 i* E/ `: Q
> All were screaming, 'Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay'* G! d9 x4 g, H7 s* o
>7 z( N( _8 q1 K7 T, Q
> Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by
. u+ D# m+ Z3 F5 @> turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, 'Run to third!4 w& l" U. V: `/ ^- `; _2 d1 ^8 x
> Shay, run to third!'% J* d' H$ T3 S. I
>0 R% j9 O% z# ~7 r: q% e
> As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on
0 I3 I3 Z3 K! k; }9 f: ^> their feet screaming, 'Shay, run home! Run home!' Shay ran to home, stepped+ D6 {! ^; I" X4 m: {7 l: g
> on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the
2 M% Z5 _+ d1 \4 N4 y  _5 L> game for his team., b. J! W5 y& y& \1 h* W+ x- g

& P6 x! V& ~/ j% q, r% Z/ r4 s> 'That day', said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face,* m4 h( {9 w/ A) T' @4 E) Y
> 'the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity# h' m) f' K; j) ~: k
> into this world'./ ^. }8 N3 A5 \+ }
># S  \1 z( `2 V& Y4 m5 x
> Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never# z6 `% a0 \$ e: n: w* B* |$ C. e
> forgotten being the hero and making his father so happy, and coming home and& O( {" |0 Z- z; T
> seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!4 [' Y. v& J: l+ b" e4 d

( ?6 w- Y/ b! y% t' d' @> messages about life choices, people hesitate. The crude, vulgar, and often
& [( L4 k7 T: e+ D> obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion about decency' Z4 g, W. P9 H! [1 m4 j: D+ O
> is too often suppressed in our schools and workplaces.% K1 W  [6 _5 C! Z

. g+ X4 Q6 B4 g$ ~2 B> If you're thinking about forwarding this message, chances are that you're

> A wise man once said every society is judged by
2 G3 l0 o5 E& b$ b# P& R0 D> how it treats it's least fortunate amongst them.9 w3 V  b# }2 }, y3 d( e4 O$ p
