! u& m, e5 s2 X& c& EGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

& t9 s3 J0 D+ _* L1 S9 LYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties * L8 H8 K) g6 u4 L9 U9 z- u
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
" R6 K3 r |% f unews to report from that meeting.

5 \" T3 p, I( [First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 7 f6 m' n% P, i6 T# V/ {
undergraduate international students from the increase to the 6 ~: D; U/ s$ c' _3 L4 \
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international 3 L q. T8 Z% G/ {0 J
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base ( D6 V9 E; ?7 J2 |' D ` q
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
9 F8 D3 L" K, E( r" j8 a! o# j1 e4 jAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
7 ~6 `/ m; `: p fthe differential for international graduate students.% R4 O- @# U0 P& Q
7 k0 d6 M- x6 v8 ~8 g& N7 ?5 m
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
4 f* z0 C, m! a2 f* {4 r% E1 Fincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to ! w0 l- r k: ^9 v! B# u: g2 g j4 K' v
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 7 O- b! s! o3 y: C0 ?* I7 ~
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
$ k o; O; T0 T/ fleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in : ]& B: ^6 N" Q" C4 Q
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
! B# i& e U/ d# p( Dincreases once they are here./ f3 _3 [2 q: e9 N% o! X8 P! u! c
) D) O8 L' ^ D- [) L( v
The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the - M0 B" r) S* b6 [6 K
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I * Z% F. U0 C. [; ~4 _
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
# d3 |4 d/ I! u) c& m/ B* Q' T4 jhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this # V& z/ L; D$ } E9 W0 o/ f" l& {
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your ) r( ]" x8 m* J* G4 a3 F7 e( o
