Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. ( O m4 ~ D: X* S2 W

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties , l. @2 [5 W/ N
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
4 S: u y4 K3 Y4 h: S1 ^* N$ p/ rnews to report from that meeting.
" O* d. d7 m$ R' w1 c" Z1 j. Z9 N1 s5 J7 K3 _& J s% X1 @/ m7 _
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
}) [: I" `, Q& Qundergraduate international students from the increase to the
' F- q3 L3 `2 t% Bdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
' R' X% W* v- P0 v1 C5 _! `students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
8 m1 m% p4 X( btuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 3 X% k7 o4 a4 k( m; k2 ]% B
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
: A) q! Q% _3 |: f; W6 K. @the differential for international graduate students.

Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
5 O3 T0 Q; y- w. w( {* A$ gincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 0 p* `; l0 [' ?3 q1 c
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students - ?1 B: f! T3 c( K; D5 b7 b( O4 ^( }
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At , m {% Q+ F& q8 d5 N- Y
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in % @# L2 s( c: G$ P
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected 5 Q+ r. I U3 o3 H- I
increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
- {0 c/ [+ m! F9 I; q8 Rinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
# e2 @! Z7 m8 \1 _0 j( g9 Awould like to say thank you to all of the international students that , g1 j4 _+ J+ U0 B; [
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
! X0 w* p0 F c2 A9 N+ Aincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your / B8 Y( b! Z* R, Z! B5 `
help. Thank you.
