* O4 E! Y, X; t% P9 rGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. ( z. Q, N" l, |) C- p

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
" ?( b2 T2 K' Z( ]( [Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
7 ]( x- O/ c0 p# @' \' knews to report from that meeting.
$ ]% x$ e9 ?. y! h. F0 s3 E
6 y; i& p$ a" q9 }First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
6 f2 {& `& I& f0 B/ }9 K" Y% S5 yundergraduate international students from the increase to the
; n1 p* Q1 @* H( R n, Sdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
6 {4 f7 i1 @" Lstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 7 \8 R2 S3 [% l; ?$ X
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 4 P( A! w/ b& X) Q$ Q1 |
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
- A: x) J& Z4 T! t+ ithe differential for international graduate students.
] U1 i& K- V) p% n- e. E+ }0 r( q2 `* `
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an : I# {' }( Z* P7 ^+ k+ `3 S
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
% l; ^( u0 L2 J/ [! h/ k( y+ K! f% ?220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
" K+ j7 d; e! Y3 m$ U9 [will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
1 v0 ]0 K) Q# e X* eleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
8 Z3 k# a- A& c3 T& Z! x( Etuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected ) Q$ w+ ?8 a" w( Q# o2 n
increases once they are here.
& ^4 k) o! a: J# t
+ C o5 Z- Z- n; ~The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
0 x, L6 t& Z! d# x3 Hinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
# B3 z. |7 E% `! ~+ Rwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that $ c& {( ?0 `+ I! S0 v! D- O
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this K% j% {6 |, I8 ?
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your ; K, q- q! {" w& s
help. Thank you.
