Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 2 {/ ^ A& S3 I2 }, b- C

9 s* ]* p- h7 W' l6 k% x1 `2 \Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties - r3 \2 t( k# c
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad # G! G5 @: O5 F4 N; m* M; d
news to report from that meeting.
/ m: S# [- B% c3 M" a# F3 \, @7 w/ } N# E2 {5 Y, n
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 6 Y" m) n: O& x) v
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
3 V' h K, S$ K% b Xdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
8 q8 ^! x' J4 V$ v" \students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
, T% ^# |" m! f3 @# x( Btuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). : b8 u* k: i9 H$ l1 X
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
, n2 Q: x# F4 S* wthe differential for international graduate students.

$ K' [6 t1 m) [8 b' E5 O- K/ p; N) ~Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
' j3 |3 q) V0 Lincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to ; F2 _0 h/ Z( j
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
6 F. }, `5 ^& awill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
9 v% J. f. U' I* s3 d3 {9 o' yleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in t q& X5 E, m; A5 o- @7 c4 l
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
( U3 J6 i; J7 v% T3 l- o/ T& Qincreases once they are here.4 F4 U S; J; ?* j d
# s4 \; A' s3 _+ EThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
# i; O; }3 J+ P A' Y( O1 }8 l) Winternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
