. M" Q& s4 U, o1 n6 i( A5 x2 o( RYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 0 b3 ?1 f/ K/ d9 B9 r5 O& g) e" t
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
$ u5 ?" P% x* r5 t5 u0 x0 u% unews to report from that meeting.
W6 Z0 `, y# W* B4 n& W* s1 n `* V; a; M/ _6 i. N
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current ( f& I3 H; v8 Y5 L0 h i% m) s
undergraduate international students from the increase to the " v- c/ f5 w/ n
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international 4 x) P- [( H" @
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base ( o$ x' a/ o- S& ~
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
/ }6 f+ n; ?2 Q% eAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase ' s9 }! T6 J. t- B
the differential for international graduate students.% Y& l5 @! K" Y+ u
. q& I( _- i% _9 FNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
# `4 C, V( b! w/ y' E( ~, Bincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
& b ]: e# T/ V9 _- j0 w220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
4 m: l( l: r, G: h3 S* M: Y. U/ fwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
7 `# f, T& B4 ]8 Z( D9 Cleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
0 W5 d) \ {) ?tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
" y) K& T+ U a7 q' q2 Cincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
8 ]7 r* [, g" N5 @, F6 z( o2 dinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I ; [$ `# E% O7 y1 L: I, P
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that 9 Q0 H2 I+ c+ X" ~. m
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
, X0 I \0 T. u4 F: Kincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
