2 W& p; r4 Q2 Q$ z: J+ \7 E: EGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 2 f0 [1 U6 N g7 W% z

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

3 S! J8 V* K* o' B, d" L9 SYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
) h$ y# I! q' d R+ l6 [Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad * l" [- S& w1 I2 h' a' K
news to report from that meeting.
5 C! O3 {* k& T+ [* f0 i9 T6 Z' [2 ?+ C" q2 b1 `
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
& K! T. r9 O. a, M, Uundergraduate international students from the increase to the 4 w. v- R: }* L/ Z7 T
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international " s0 U/ ^+ o8 r. @
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 3 i* z/ b/ y$ O- c; x% ^1 d5 ]
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). ( g0 T% j A; ~3 G* U$ K+ s5 i
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
# S1 Z0 a+ W! L8 t# @the differential for international graduate students.9 L& Y# U3 o$ R
6 @0 x; A$ K; u0 R" q0 ]; x) `Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
" A9 M3 k# F" ~/ x" W8 fincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to ! S) y/ p$ ?2 L" ?9 t3 x, h+ ~. }
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
# U& I) A! ]8 p4 O, p, p5 }will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 2 [: H) z4 O) D* t7 {
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 3 W4 k' |/ Y3 H; ^+ A
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected ' h/ h9 e/ `& |7 S
increases once they are here.
+ ^* u% K" t6 t5 Y9 {+ Z. P" O- K5 C$ A5 ^/ Q* q4 k
The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
; m& G$ C, E6 l0 b- u' y3 |international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
: U, z0 B( c& e7 x# U* t9 iwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
, J: \! B/ ]# j7 H% G$ R9 s) Ahave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 3 D4 g2 n4 Y v3 @# g
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your 0 \8 m0 z$ t6 P! x/ d% @9 _1 q! R
