Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. $ N6 z8 r; @* T& t( n3 E; Q# ]

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
1 N) k/ y8 D9 {8 C$ cCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 3 \5 X. r) h; m9 L, g1 `! d
news to report from that meeting.

+ O' |( z) [9 X( {$ p" a2 \! G# [First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current * I% c" P' _% `3 W$ F& Y
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
5 H% R* s I6 d3 |$ tdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international ' P+ F1 [/ k- N4 a- T! G0 W9 L
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 2 w/ ^2 v; Q( R+ [) c4 [
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 1 G9 \; ~* m" q
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 0 ?9 o, t/ ?0 d' w! g8 F
the differential for international graduate students.9 H$ T( u! D. v# F: M. c
( w, d/ Z9 D: {4 d) ]) Y
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 6 s( _- |; t3 M n
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
/ X( D( q" q# O9 A. l220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students * _0 L: e6 i4 o; e4 ?6 v. D/ B# w
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At ' u9 X3 E7 T: H! O
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in R, s8 f5 u9 S& \
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected

1 B" x# s! }' |( M4 MThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
4 H1 Y2 z+ P6 \ X5 Y; [international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
' m" o- g7 C7 k, c6 E+ gwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
; @: k4 X$ L: W6 W& `have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this ) V6 A" p9 R# }3 F: \) B
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your " J( n, m) t$ s3 k& I3 B6 a8 W7 C
