In response to the economic uncertainty, the Fed made the unexpected move of approving a half-percentage point cut in its discount rate on loans to banks before trading began。The Fed decision sent the loonie surging 1.22 cents to 94.22 cents US -- after running as high as 94.74 cents US -- as the greenback weakened.

& }( g9 _: {+ _6 Z# V" W" C6 d; iToronto's S&P/TSX composite index was ahead 111.84 points to 12,960.54 after jumping almost 400 points -- still in positive territory for the year after a 200.06-point slide Thursday wiped out the TSX's gains for the year so far.

" c; x6 @8 U5 m# i. wThe Fed did not change its target for the more important federal funds rate, which has remained at 5.25 per cent for more than a year.
