Today I was volunteering at a post office. A man in an old jacket with uncombed hair came to the counter. He had a wallet in his hand, and put it on the counter. He told me: % x* E6 t$ `: m: |
"I am going to send it back".
5 U* s6 V5 A8 DI did not understand what he meant by "it", because usually people would send a letter or a parcel back to the sender, and I did not see he had any of those. So I asked him:- k% _. n0 D; w) n1 u0 z/ c
"I am sorry, what are you sending back?" $ }7 x; x! ?( z! x$ K
He said, "the Wallet, I am sending back the wallet." Then he added: "I am going to pay the postage." & X0 r" U/ v' s) }
"Oh, you found a wallet, and you are going to send it back to the person who lost it?"
8 g5 M! Q" S) E" m"Yes, I did."
, K( d) [; e W1 Q3 Z# TFinally I understood: this dishevelled man found a wallet, and he was going to return it to the owner by post.
1 ]: X$ w3 u7 P H% q- }He took the ID card from the wallet, and showed me the address of the loser of the wallet. I saw there were several one-hundred bills in the wallet. * b i4 t6 k$ O
"Are you going to take some money from the wallet to pay the postage?"' x% w# H X6 J5 x

He took out his wallet, which was nearly worn-out, small, and almost empty. There were some coins inside.

"Yes, you may." I thought he must want to be a nameless hero. But he said:

My heart had a sudden jump. I realized that this is a homeless man who found money but was sending it back to the person who lost it. # U. o" y. P, j# u
He did not a posses a home, but he had a big heart. He had the precious fortune of being a man of integrity. * ^1 t) l5 E0 H
